[Music] hi everybody today but we're gonna be looking at is a shower tub drain slash strainer as you can see there is no pop-up in order to be able to have a filled tub as well as it looks like somebody's been buggering around with a flat head or something to try to pop off what used to be there so what we're gonna do today is we're gonna remove this one and replace it with a new one what you're gonna need for this is a few things this is a a barbell tub tool you'll need one of those flat-head screwdriver pair of pump pliers or channel locks plumber's putty and of course our new pop-up that's going in so the best way to do this find this guy here as you can see it has two sizes ours fits in the smaller size so what we do once we've got it in there there's a little hole on the slot put your flathead through there's a little bit of extra leverage you turn it you'll notice that it starts to come undone pretty good once you get her rolling and then do the rest by hand okay out done you can see it's all buggered up we don't want that so we get our new one here and we'll do first before we attempt to put it in we can discard this because this is actually for the underside of the tub and we don't need to get to that a leak is not our issue here so that's what this prevents we're all about the aesthetics of the finished look so you get this guy here first thing remove the pop-up that way you can work with the inside of your drain before anything goes into any sort of connection with thread we need some sort of sealant whether it's you know sometimes you use teflon for things and in this case we use plumber's putty and you can get this stuff at any hardware store I mean all this stuff is available and anything close to your home I'm imagining so get yourself a little ball roll it up kind of like a fat piece of spaghetti get this guy here you want to line it underneath just like that keep your little tub up and ready for extras so once you've got this like this you want to kind of give a little bit of a cleaning off around here just get us smoother finish like so this guy here start off with just hand threading it in you don't want to get to your your tools yet to make sure you don't cross thread anything so once you've got it in a couple turns grab this guy again start twisting it in now being a spot that it's a tub holds a lot of water and we're on an upper floor in this house we really want to make sure that we have a good seal on this so go in as tight as you can with your hands once you're there grab your pump pliers tighten it up okay so we want this as tight as we can we remove all the excess plumber's putty from around us you said you keep your open little package and you throw it in there so there's no mess anywhere so anything that's not necessary is gonna push out everything we need is going to stay in there and act as our new seal so get this guy in nice and tight like so pull it out clean up that little bit of excess plumber's putty keep it cuz you know no need to waste once you got that in there like that easy-peasy grab this put on here it fits nice in there slots in pushes close pushes open pushes closed now that's super easy right I mean you look at it it's easy it took maybe five minutes this is one of those jobs where if you were to call a plumber like myself or someone else they're gonna come in you're looking at your your service call so whether it's 100 bucks 150 bucks whatever may be I mean these parts are maybe you know 30 bucks 40 bucks so you're looking at almost $200 well as you can see in under five minutes we've completely changed it out at really the only cost is if you don't have the tools you're gonna buy a couple tools that you'll always have and a little bit of parts so what we'll do now is move all this stuff out of here and we'll close it and we'll get of this a little bit of a test just to check our seal so all we need I'm in my socks so I'm gonna want to get wet so we'll just leave this for a minute we can see there's no bubbles coming up that's what happens if water is escaping you'll see it trades places with air the air will come up the water will go down so you can see it's held push our pop up you can see it drains voila
