what's up bug dog with Deena in the garage today I'm going to show you how to both remove and reinstall the pulley onto a power steering pump with one of these kits that you can rent at the auto parts store now in theory these kids come with everything you need to remove a pulley from a power steering pump and reinstall them they even come with some instructions right here some nice pretty pictures in theory that's all you need now a lot of people have a lot of trouble with these they have some inherent flaws that can make it real difficult but I figured out a couple little tips that can help you efficiently use one of these to both remove and reinstall a pulley onto your power steering pump alright since I have my pulley off right now we're gonna focus on installing a pulley first and the first thing you have to do you'll notice if you're looking at your power steering pump the inside of this shaft is threaded so you want to figure out which of these pieces here fits those threads for a Mopar product like this this power steering pump is off a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 liter it's gonna be the universal one there's a forward one here GM confirm that that threads down in there this one does and then you're gonna attach it to this center section here this is the universal center section use this for both installing and D installing and you want to get that threaded on there relatively tight that's an that's a first tip for this process making sure that everything is always tight on here next you're gonna need this washer this thrust bearing and this piece right here alright this piece right here is the key to the whole thing you're gonna assemble it like this going to take your pulley put that right on there and you always want to make sure there's a side that has a lip this is so that you can de install it later make sure you always install the lip side out is how you're gonna assemble it you put this right on the top right there then you're gonna put your washer down then you're gonna put your thrust bearing with the movable side down onto the washer put this guy in like that and thread it into the shaft of the power steering pump that makes sense and we work this guy all the way down get it nice and tight doesn't want to move anymore now here's where the big trick comes in the way this is supposed to work is you get a 21 millimeter down here and you got a half inch up here and you use the 21 millimeter to tighten this whole assembly down while you use the half inch to hold everything tight now this works great at first but as soon as you start getting some real serious tension in the system everything wants to start moving and it gets a lot harder to hold this still keep the pump from moving and get good leverage on this what we're gonna do is take our half-inch put it right here in the vise nice and tight okay then we're going to slide our whole assembly into the open end of that wrench just like that now we're free to hold onto the pump with one hand operate our 21 mil with the other hand and this one's not going anywhere and you just work it down nice and slow it takes a little bit I hope you'll get there eventually now that one of the big problems with these kits that you rent from the auto parts store is that a lot of times all this stuff is rounded you know that's what makes it even harder to do this you know a bunch of uncle Jerry's have rented this stuff before you and it's all rounded out which is why this trick really helps because it kind of takes some of the guesswork out of this takes the human element out and you just have that point being held firm and we'll work this down until it's all the way down as far as it will go without you having to really wing on this 21 and that's about it at a certain point that'll stop you'll be able to feel that it's as far as it needs to go and you can back all this stuff off there you go you have an installed pump well pull on your pump solder is to it I was figure out how to get this thing off now removal was the easy part as far as I'm concerned you're gonna need that same large center section with the half-inch hex on the back you're going to need this same piece that we had last time you're gonna need these jaws these kind of like bearing pullers you know and then this is the retaining circle for the bearing pullers and we jump back over here you're gonna take a bearing post you can put them around this collar right here that's why you got to make sure you put this collar out because if you don't you have no way to pull this thing off put them on like that you're gonna take this guy right here stick him in there as well oops have one of these upside down hey go they have two different sides make sure the larger lip is on the bottom it's how it's supposed to go then you take this sleeve put that over it go ahead and thread this guy into here I think you can see what's all about to happen now you do the opposite whereas last time the half-inch was stationary and the 21 did all the movement you kind of want to keep the 21 stationary and the half-inch is going to do a lot of the work now you can do this by hand like this and what you're gonna do is tighten it down essentially pulling it all off but if you have an impact it makes it darn easy get a half-inch on an impact get your 21 on there stationary there you go pulls it right back off the shaft take the sleeve off take that off take that out pulley and pump are now separate some other good tips when you go to put the pulley back on definitely greased down the shaft a little bit I have a grease mix that's 50% lithium grease 50% ATF that I use on almost everything to lubricate does a real good job I would recommend something like that you could use damn near anything is just gonna help to slide down on there you want to make sure that you get when you're putting your pulley on you get it all the way down on my W J my 4 liter W J I didn't get it like totally down it had to go one more quarter turn before it was properly seated and the result was my belt squeaked like crazy because the belt was pulling to one side and making excessive contact with all these ribs it was a pain in the butt I mean I put the whole thing on and I had to take it off literally just to go pink another quarter turn one make sure you get it down as far as it'll go so that it's properly seated on there that's all there is to a friend these kits are great because otherwise you know you'd have to buy one of these they're like 50 bucks I don't personally I don't use it often enough I use it once every few years not to justify the 50 bucks I can put the 50 bucks elsewhere so you go to advanced O'Reilly's autozone you rent one for 50 bucks use it for the weekend take it back the problem is because they get passed around I mean you can see this one it's all shouted up I actually my one wrench wouldn't fit on there it was a little too worn I had to go get an almost new half-inch to keep it from slipping but if you use these little tricks device and impact gun a little bit of grease on the shaft you should be alright you can make one of these work it is totally doable alright so if you've got any questions by all means leave us a comment down there in a squat box let us know what you're thinking as always thanks for watching see you next time
