hello and welcome back to another episode of driveway 101 the series where we show you the best way to clean your car on your drive hello and welcome back to driveway 101. today we're going to be looking at paint preparation so we'll be using our smooth surface clay kit and our ultimate compound to remove any swirl marks and imperfections and all of the contaminants from above the surface of the paintwork what's really important is evaluating the surface of the paintwork clay is a fantastic product at removing anything from above the surface of your vehicle but it's not going to remove swirl marks that are embedded into the lacquer so when you're looking at a problem that you may have like a bird poo stain may be it's important to note that clay won't be removing that ultimate compound will so evaluate the surface choose the right product and then you can set about the task in hand when we're talking about evaluating the surface as you can see this has got some swell marks from washing but you can't hear any of those contaminations typically behind the wheel whilst you can't necessarily see them you can hear them and i can certainly feel them it could be tar spots typically splashed up from the wheel bird pre-residue fall out from the sky anything clay will remove anything that you can feel compound will remove anything that you can see so first thing to do is take one of the clay bars from the packaging split it in half keep half in the packaging so as not to get any contamination into the clay bar take the half that you're going to use get it malleable get some heat into it and then we'll move to the panel the claying process is the best investment in time for your vehicle it will remove anything from above the surface of the lacquer it's like a reset button really so anything that you want to do to enhance gloss to remove swirl marks is embedded in the lacquer we want to give that upper surface a fresh clean start it's important to use a quick detailer as lubrication water is very harsh and doesn't offer the lubricity for clay there's a couple of do's and don'ts for claying most important one if you drop the clay on the floor it has to go in the bin you can't take the risk of it picking up any contaminants even if you're thinking you need a garage it's a clean floor if it picks up a minute speck of dust rubs it over the paintwork you're into swell city after that lubrication is key so plenty of lubrication onto the clay bar and onto the panel it's finger tip pressure only we suggest to go in a cross hatch motion if you go in a circular motion you can miss areas so cross-hatch motion gives you a uniform to pass and as you can see it's collected tar and road grime away from the surface you fold it into itself need a new piece of clay and repeat the process it's quite a sensory process so as you're feeling it with your fingertips you'll feel resistance that will keep reminding you that there's contaminants there that need to be removed as that resistance is less you can simply take your microfiber wipe it away that surface is now smooth like glass and ready for us to move on to the compound stage [Music] probably a good time to give a top tip really as you can see the sun's decided to join us for summer in the uk this is a black car it's in the sun in the morning our top tip really is you can work direct in direct sunlight but if the panel is too hot for you to hold your hand on then don't use any product because if you're using a quick detailer it will evaporate if you're using a compound it will cook on and you won't get that working time that you need if you if the panel is too hot just wait until it's a cooler part of the day if you can put a tent up move it in the garage just uh it's the heat it's not necessarily direct sun just the time that the car's been in the sun so now we've removed everything from above the surface of the lacquer we're going to concentrate on those imperfections that are in the upper surface uh just imperfections on swirl marks that are inflicted in wash process burp poo stains and even oxidization now we're not going any of that today but if you've got a faded red car that's slightly white then ultimate compound is going to be the product for you we're going to take a look at hand application on the driveway here and later on dale is going to show you how to apply it by machine so because we're hand applying it i'm going to be using our even coat microfiber pad we have a foam applicator pad you can use those too i'm using this because the microfiber will just aid in the cutting process it's a little bit easier to get hold off and i just find it a lot nicer to use so as you saw we've now clayed the surface so it's smooth to the touch but you can see those swirl marks in it we'll be applying ultimate compound again in a cross hatch motion and then we'll be taking it off of the microfiber towel to assess the surface as with all of our products you only need to use a small amount a one pound coin size blob is enough for the area you're going to work with today it's very important to give yourself an even coverage of product i always draw a line and then work through the reason being if you start here and just work directly to here you're going to have less product when you get to the end so i've applied and now i'm just going to work it you can see i'm not flexing the panel i'm just working it some of the product is drying so as you've worked it a little top tip as well spritz of detailer onto the towel we'll just lift that away straight away as with hand application we wouldn't expect you to be able to get 100 clarity in your paint work if there are some still small swirl marks and imperfections in there they're a little bit deeper that's where dale is going to come into this video and show you all about machine application thanks tom in this half of the video we're going to be talking about the same subjects of using clay and compound but we're going to be using them in different ways now to remove the surface contaminants nice and quickly we're going to be using our hybrid ceramic synthetic clay kit and to remove the light soils and scratches we're going to be using our mt320 machine polisher along with our ultimate compound obviously before any correction work is made on the car make sure the surface is clean and dry now before we get started with the synthetic clay pad we need to break it in and soften it before we touch it with the paint just so the pad's nice and ready so for this we use it on the glass so this primes a pad and softens it up ready so it performs well on your paint so the reason the synthetic clay comes with the hybrid ceramic detailer because the hybrid ceramic detail offers that extra lubricity for the pad to move smoothly across the surface now the synthetic pad erodes and agitates the surface contaminants before they are removed with the towel they do not stick to the pad so just like the first half of the video lubricate the panel as well as a clave if needed and work in smooth cross hatch motions now top tip if you do drop this pad on the floor unlike traditional clay it can be used again just make sure you thoroughly clean it out before it touches the paint now the paint's nice and smooth it's time to address how the paint looks now for this i'll be using our mt320da polisher along with our polishing disc and our ultimate compound now we do have a heavier cut cutting disc but because my car is well looked after it doesn't really need it and we always suggest starting with the softest approach first so as you can tell we're not in the detail in bay and we are about to use a machine polisher so there is some ground rules one contaminants in the air making sure that between each pass dust particles are not sitting on the surface so using a quick detailer and clean microfiber towels to maintain between passes and also check the temperature of the paint now we're doing this very early in the morning we're advised to avoid those midday sun because the panel is going to be too hot to machine so do it in the morning or in the afternoon so this is our ultimate compound it really is one of our hero products it contains chemical cleaners to revive thai colours but also mechanical compounds to remove swirls and scratches before the polishing and waxing stage [Music] so as you can see we did two to three passes on a nice moderate arm speed now once you've finished do not let the ultimate compound dry take it off straight away with a clean supreme shine microfiber towel as you can see the first panel is done now we're going to work our way around the rest of the car but always keeping in mind those elements making sure that the panels are dust free and not too hot [Music] so a quick recap before i leave you to carry on with the rest of the car we used our hybrid ceramic synthetic clay kit to remove those above surface contaminants that are sitting on the paint and making it feel rough to the touch then we enhance the gloss and remove light swirls and scratches using our ultimate compound and polishing disc with our mt320 da polisher so that's it for this episode thank you very much for joining us remember to like share and subscribe and tap that notification bell to be notified of when the next
