Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
There is also the foreground select tool, which is often a simpler method. https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-foreground-select.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG5NYDp-kj8
He didn't mention what to do about the part the technique didn't really work for - that bit on the horizon to the right which was sufficiently similar to make it through his filtering. Often you're back to manually attacking it with the dodge tool. I've not worked it out yet, but it should be possible to a different filtering method on that difficult area and combine just that part with the main mask.
It's worth noting that people very often use a colour channel as the basis for the mask, rather than choosing a desaturation option. This will often give you a better starting point. It's worth looking under the colour menu for other decompositions which might give you more contrast between the hair and background.
When I follow tutorials I like to have copies of the original files to allow me to follow along while doing the steps and comparing my results to the intended results.
Really good stuff, love to see a longer version with more explanations!
