in this video I'm going to refinish an old porcelain sink I don't have a great before picture but this is what the sink looks like that I'm going to refinish it was chipped and peeling this is what its gonna look like afterwards so let's get started the first step was to prep the sink using a refinishing kit basically it had a sanding pad and some abrasive paste that you scrub in a circular motion all over the surfaces you want to refinish once done scrubbing the sink was rinsed clean with water [Music] next up the sink was washed down using a solution of TSP trisodium phosphate it's not the best stuff for the environment but it's a very powerful cleaner also it goes without saying you gotta wear gloves again the surfaces were rinsed clean try to sink really well before the next step [Music] ideally you should remove any fixtures or drains before refinishing but I just mask them off with tape [Music] now it's time to recode a sink using a two-part epoxy purposely made for refinishing sinks and tubs I'm using clinks epoxy enamel kit I'll post links to the products I used in the video in the description below to apply the epoxy I'm using a soft chick brush it gives a nice smooth finish and the brush will be ruined unless you clean it with epoxy thinner but I usually just end up throwing it out because you're really inexpensive it comes in two parts and you mix the resin and hardener together and then stir well it's a pretty slow setting epoxy since I didn't need all of it mix because my sink is small I use a scale and measured it out in a jar so this is the really stinky part I'd suggest if you're going to do this that you do it before you go on vacation so you can leave the sink alone for a few days so the epoxy has time to cure also your house will smell like epoxy but the smell does go away quickly once the epoxy has set I give the whole sink a wipe down with epoxy thinner you could also use lacquer thinner this stuff is really stinky I ended up wearing a respirator while working with defender and epoxy [Music] painting on the epoxy is easy just apply in overlapping strokes on the vertical surfaces don't apply it too thick or you'll get runs it's better to do multiple coats instead of one thick coat [Music] [Music] in between coats put the epoxy in the freezer as it will help slow down the hardening [Music] let's set for a few hours and you can come back and add another coat repeat as needed [Music] once finished avoid using the sink for a few days ideally give it a week to reach full hardness here's the finished sink I'm happy with the end result and I've been using it for months so far and the finish is holding up really well alright subscribe thumbs up if you found this video helpful and see you in the next video bye [Music]
