How To Prune Citrus Trees

So here we have an older citrus tree that has been neglected a bit. So I want to show you how to bring this tree back into shape. This is a trifoliate plant that they attached this orange tree to. This is where the two   meet. So anything that's growing up  below that line, needs to be removed. There. We also want to take things that are  just growing in the middle because we really want   better air flow. So I'm going to take some of these little guys out. We're doing some larger  cuts, but you can see some of these things.   Let's take a look at this big branch here. It's a  large branch, but it's coming straight up through the   middle of the tree and it's blocking a lot of airflow,  so it leads to pest problems and disease problems. I've mentioned the water sprouts earlier. This  is what you're looking at. So it's a   long branch that comes out of another branch  and it grows straight up. It's just growing straight  up through the middle of the tree. I mentioned   damage. A lot of times when cold weather  comes the tips will suffer. So,   if you got a situation like this, where  the tip is broken you just want to come   back and cut it where the first leaf is. There  you go. That's all you need to do. That's not really pruned very well.  There's some new growth here, but I   want to go ahead and cut it back to that.  This branch here is about half-dead, so I want to take it out and the one next to it. You can see it's got some damage and it's broken I'm going to cut this one off. If it puts fruit on it,  it's going to hang on the ground anyway. That's good for now. Keep an eye on it. Come back.  We can always take more out later, but you can't   put things back. So, take your pruning slowly and  judge it. Make your tree a healthy tree.
