hey what's up you guys ask out with everyday home repairs and today I'm gonna walk you through how to properly adjust the tension on your belt drive for your garage door opener now our belt is completely loose because we just installed a new Chamberlain garage door opener for you you might be getting some squeaking or you can see that your belt is visibly loose so you just want to know how to properly get it back to the tension as prescribed by the manufacturer not a problem it's very easy well zoom in here and I'll show you how to tighten this up and then also one thing to look out for which some people overlook and might have been improperly installed from the start and you just got to make that correction now okay so a few things right away to look for before you start to tension the spring and get proper tension one for some reason this is this has been installed for years now and this tab was slightly bent for mine so all I did was to take a pair of channellocks adjust them all the way out and then use this back tab not a ton of pressure but then just squeeze this back perpendicular to the surface so the so the bracket is in the proper place most likely yours is not bad is not an issue the second thing to look out for is this little silver clip here now I have an example of a spring that comes in a new cake you can see the spring is completely compressed so you would put this through the bracket you would connect it to your belt and then once the belt is connected it's pulling right so it can't let it loose and you need to release this clip what I've seen before is people don't release that clip so then the spring can never extend and cannot apply the proper pressure so all you have to do for that is use a flathead screwdriver place it in the slot here and then rotate the nut on the end and then that will release that clip and allow the spring to apply pressure and extend out so just watch out for that make sure your clip here is similar to what I have released and then pressing against this bracket okay so when it comes to adjustment all we're looking for here and be good for you to have a tape measure is an inch and a half total length of the spring right now I'm more like an inch and three quarters so I need to compress the spring down to here and that is just simply done by rotating that nut which will bring this threaded rod through the hole and then compress the spring to do that all you'll need is a half inch rep wrench and you'll start to rotate as you're facing the nut you'll rotate clockwise and in my instance you'll be rotating for a little while until you compress that down to an inch and a quarter okay now you can check your length all right so I'm passing each and a half that's still a little bit to go before our inch and a quarter okay so I have just a little bit more about a sixteenth of an inch that should do it all right that is right an inch and a quarter just one note here is this rod looks to have about 18 threads per one inch so every one rotation here is going to be just a little bit under 1/16 of an inch compression so if you see your 1/16 of an inch short or 1/8 of an inch a sixteenth of an inch you've got to do about one full rotation and 1/8 of an inch you got to do a little bit over two rotations just for clarification because the belt was slightly twisted there when you're done tightening make sure the belt is in the vertical position without any rotation in it overall quick and easy you'll knock this one out in just a couple minutes really looking for the inch in the quarter to make sure you have the proper compression on the spring and then the overall belt system works appropriately and according to the design be careful to make sure that the spring is actually released because if you don't have that clip released then there is no spring in the system you're going to over tighten your belt it will work but it will lead to early failure of the components because there'll be no ability to absorb the loads through the spring if you like these sort of videos don't forget to subscribe to our channel as we have new videos like this coming out on a weekly basis now we have many other videos that can help you out with your garage door opener such as the safety switches and troubleshooting those we're installing a new garage door opener a new Chamberlain be 750 model right now we have ones for programming your wireless key pads and also your home link system in your car and just many others out there that are gonna help you around the house so don't forget to subscribe and then we'll catch you on the next one take care
