hey guys and welcome to the clear English corner I'm Keenan your personal American English pronunciation coach in this lesson we're talking about the OL or L sound there's actually two different L sounds in American English there's the light L which is the L you hear at the beginning of words and the beginning of syllables so in words like like and love last live allow that's the light L there's also the dark L the dark L is the sound that you hear at the end of words and the end of syllables so words like all Apple people always that's the dark L in this lesson we're going to focus on the light L we're going to perfect that sound in some words and we're going to talk about how it's different from the R sound there's another video on the dark L and you can get to that video by clicking on the tag that's floating above my head or I'll share a link in the video description you'll definitely want to check out that lesson as well so that you have the whole scoop on this sound on the clear English corner we're covering everything American English pronunciation related so if you're looking to refine your skills in this area you've definitely found the right channel be sure to subscribe and tap the bell so that you'll receive notifications anytime a new lesson is published okay so the light L when we're making this sound you want to take the blade of your tongue or the front of your tongue and you're going to press it quickly against the back of your top front teeth la-la-la the sides of the tongue are relaxed and air actually flows out along the sides of your tongue lah-lah the lips are relaxed for this sound there's no tension and no rounding you want to be sure the lips don't round out as you make this sound or you might end up with something closer to an R or aw so keep the lips relaxed la la la let's try this sound with a few vowel sounds just to kind of play with it try lei Li lie low Moo perfect let's try moving this sound into the beginning of words try like like like it I like it try last last last night what'd you do last night life life my life I love my life try live live live a little you should live a little awesome and you're also gonna hear the light L sound at the beginning of syllables so let's try a few words like that try only only only one there's only one try family family my family I miss my family try believe believe can you believe can you believe that awesome you might also have some trouble distinguishing the light L lalla from the earth or our sound so let's talk about three distinct ways that these sounds are different first you want to consider what the tongue tip is doing the front of your tongue for the light L the tongue tip is pressing and releasing against the back of your top front teeth the la la now for the r sound your tongue tip doesn't touch anything it's not touching the back of your top teeth it's not touching the roof of your mouth it's just hanging out in the middle of the mouth pulled back a bit or or a second difference the sides of the tongue for the light L the sides of the tongue are relaxed and air is flowing out over the sides of the tongue la la when you make the R sound the sides of your tongue should be pressed against the inside of your back top molars your back top teeth or or also your lip position is different for these sounds when you make the L sound the lips are relaxed there's no tension when you make the sound the lips round out or or so you want to make sure that the lips are relaxed for the L la la la so a quick summary three differences the tongue tip is pressed quickly against the back of your top front teeth for the L la la but the tongue tip is pulled back and touching nothing for the AR or a the sides of the tongue are relaxed and air is flowing out over the sides of the tongue for L la la for our the sides of the tongue are pressed against the inside of your back top teeth ah ah the lips for the L are relaxed la la the lips for the AR are rounding out intense or or so let's try some minimal pay with the l and r sounds to really work out the differences here we go lead read load road lamp ramp light write lists wrist lead read awesome practice so that wraps up our lesson on the light L remember there's another lesson on the dark L and you want to be sure to check it out so you have the full scoop on the L sound in English I hope you found the lesson helpful if you did please be sure to share and give me a thumbs up let me know are there any words that you're having trouble with that have the L sound in it in the comments below thanks so much for tuning in and I'll see you next time
