How to prepare for your Chevening interview | My Chevening interview preparation tips

2020 evening scholarship recipient from jamaica and i am currently in the uk in southampton studying my masters in sustainability yes i am currently in the uk and i am in lockdown as we speak um it's not a fun experience but i'm still nevertheless grateful to be here um if you want to hear me talk about that you can let me know in the comments below but anyways this video is about the scholarship questions and answers that i got or the achievement scholarship questions and answers that um came about in my own interview plus the top tips that worked for me in terms of my interview preparation so i'll start with the tips and and this might be a two-part video i'm not sure yet but let's see how it goes so i'll start with the tips and then i'll go later on um into the video i'll talk about our next video i'll talk about the questions and answers so in previous videos i said that i applied for three scholarships that is the commonwealth master scholarship the small island developing state fellowship that's by the republic of ireland and of course achieving scholarship um interviewed for all three got to and went with cheating so in terms of um how i went about preparing for the interviews for each it was a little bit different the first one that i actually applied for um if you see me looking across my screen guys i actually have my notes because i don't want to miss anything i want to tell you guys everything that i can remember so don't mind me if i'm looking across okay all right so the first one that i actually interviewed for was the commonwealth master scholarship um the interview process and that one was face to face and um actually had like three days to prepare for that interview and um when i applied um i got a call about possibly like six weeks later to say okay you've been shortlisted congratulations you have an interview in three days okay so what i did with those three days was that um i spent one day researching interview questions and i got those i got like a list of questions a list of top interviews scholarship interview questions and i typed up my answers so i opened up a document and i typed up my hands and how i wanted my answers to sound and then the next two days i spent um rehearsing those answers that i had typed out not realizing at the time that that would have been my first mistake so my first mistake was actually trying to rehearse the full answers and i only had two days to do that um needless to say that interview did not go very well because i was trying to memorize the um answers when i should just be when i should have just been um talking from the heart pretty much i have to say that one thing that i did do right was that i did dress for the part and there is a lot of um i suppose debate that goes on about what a woman should be wearing to um to interviews like this my view is that if you're most if you feel most confident wearing a dress then you wear a dress if you feel most confident wearing you know a skirt and a blouse then that's up to you i felt most confident wearing a pant suit so that's what i went with um i felt confident but i still didn't do very well but you live and you learn so the next scholarship that i actually um interviewed for would have been the small islands developing states uh fellowship and i had about two weeks to prepare for that so that wasn't so bad and then in this regards i actually changed my tactics quite a bit um so i started to actually do some more research into scholarship interview questions and answers and then i actually phoned the um the achievement interview question and i think it was like in one of the facebook groups so if you're a part of those facebook groups then you can definitely get some good information from there um when i got these i kind of just applied it to ireland and then and then in addition um i did some research about ireland and their own policies in terms of climate change as well as kind of some fun facts climate change is my area so that's why i did some um research about that so it's good to do some research about what the uk or ireland is doing um in their country in terms of um your own area of expertise so um the next thing that i did was that i prepared flash cards and they're pretty much cards about you know about this size so i had the question on on top of the card and then i had um my answer in bullet points however it was in the form of the um the car context pretty much so um or the car approach so that's the the c is for context a for action r for results where i could have that um that setup i couldn't apply that to every question that i had written on the flash card but where i could i did um so then i would have been practicing uh what i would have been well not rehearsing what i would have been um trying to recall would have been the bullet points that i had written on my flash cards and um this was a phone interview so the next thing that i had to make sure that i did was that my phone was well charged of course and then on the day of the interview i had to make sure that i had no background noise and um that interview it definitely went very well um and i definitely think that it was because i had changed my tactics um i wasn't forcing myself to memorize a full um a full paragraph of a final answer for a question but instead just trying to remember our bullet points about a question so bullet points for discussion okay so when it came on to the teaming um interview preparation i realized that of course the previous scholarship or the previous interview that went very well so i decided to keep that same format in that um i had prepared flash cards specific for the achieving questions and answers um and then additionally i had researched um uk policies in terms of climate change and environmental science as well as any kind of fun facts that i could find and of course again i wrote it on my flash card and then this is what i used to practice um i spent about possibly well you have a lot more time to prepare for the evening interview to be honest um well not a lot more it depends um it really depends on your um on your embosses um guidelines uh but yeah i had a lot more time to prepare but i actually didn't start preparing until about two weeks before the interview so um right so as i said i spent the say i used the same format in that i did up my flashcards and um use those to to practice and the flash cards really are the bullet points rather they're not necessarily used for directing your response per se but it's just really to arm you with enough material so that you can um answer questions that you that you aren't even prepared for so this is actually what happened to me so apart from writing down the questions and then um bulleting my points based on the car approach i also just wrote down just a few points about the climate change um policies that they have just things to remember about the uk specifically so um additionally what i did um and i didn't do this for any other scholarship that i had that i had interviewed for um like in the week about the week leading up to the interview i actually recorded myself answering some of the questions like the critical questions you know about leadership networking studying in the uk and career and i mostly did my preparation completely on my own except for um or mostly on my own except for like uh two cases where i had a friend um ask me a couple of questions maybe like two or three questions i'm not certain if that actually added much but definitely recording myself did because um it kind of allowed me to see what i looked like when i was responding to the questions as well as to kind of identify any gaps in my responses um but i actually might do i still have the videos from when i was practicing so i might compile just a few answers and release that so that you guys can see what i was actually doing when i was preparing for it um that could be good so i'll just do that right so the achieving interview was actually online and um i don't know how i felt about that that could have been good i mean because on one hand i didn't really feel pressured necessarily to get myself all dressed up i mean of course i was business at the top but then i had just a shorts on at the bottom so they they wouldn't have known that of course so um on one hand i felt like the interview online the online interview kind of took the pressure off a little bit i don't know maybe maybe not but anyways still grateful i'm here um but overall though i'm kind of glad that i had the opportunity to interview for the previous two scholarships because had i not had that bad interview experience with the commonwealth scholarship and that a really great experience with the ir with the irish fellowship i don't know if i would have um had the achievement scholarship now to be honest there's really no teacher like experience and definitely those interviews gave me that so guys i think i'm going to have the questions and answers in a separate video um because this has gone on for a long time so i'll see you in the next video
