good evening folks this is Ken from Cinema Tokyo today I want to help you get ready for Hayao miyazaki's the boy and the heron [Music] there have been mixed reviews in Japan sure it is a confusing movie but at the same time it definitely is a monster piece and I swear I won't spare any spoilers so don't worry I said I'll help you get ready but to start off please let me be clear you don't have to do any homework to enjoy the movie but having a little background information can make it even more enjoyable if you are up for some prep but watch the rest of the video I'll share the steps to get ready for the movie and the minimum background information that I think will be useful now let me be clear my advice is to dive into this movie with a bronx late when it first came out in Japan Sergio gibbery kept it hush-hush they only reviewed this single image no trailers or taglines even they wanted folks to sit with fresh eyes and guess what people fulfill the movie had thousand different takes on it it's one of those movies that you can take out all sorts of things things and I say go in with as little information as possible so I won't be dropping any spoilers about its content before it hits other countries but live will guide you on how to prepare for the movie if you want to dive deep into the ball and the Heron start by watching music is Arya James we are talking everything from his very first film Future Boy Conan to the castle of cardio store and all the way up to his last movie before this one The Wind Rises now I won't spill the beans on why I'm suggesting this because I don't want to ruin your phone but trust me revisiting these previous movies will be time well spent there's a classic French animated movie called The King and the Mockingbird from 1980 I believe the boy and the Heron got its title from this movie Miyazaki himself has admitted that he picked up some tricks on World building and how to use vertical movement as a cinematic element from this one you can totally sense its influence on his works like the castle of cardio store and I noticed it left marks on the boy and the Heron too I hope you can find it online for streaming the boy and the Heron is the movie that connects music is past present and future the movies get a lot of his own life in it and trust me the more you know about his life the deeper you will feel the movie here's some background info about his life that I think relate to the movie Hayao Miyazaki was born in 1941 and the Pacific War kicked off later that year his dad on the Miyazaki aircraft manufacturing company a big company with thousands of employees thanks to the wartime demand they earned well and the family was quite worthy for the war time but when the war heated up they moved the factory from Tokyo to utsunamiya tochigi prefecture that's when little Hayao and his family also moved and he grew up there till the third grade when he was six his mom fell ill with Taberg crosses and she was bed waiting for nine long years until she recovered during her illness Hayao and his three brothers took over all the chores of the siblings it was Hayao who worked the most from taking care of their mother to housework so he had this super strong bond with his mom and you notice his poured this emotion into his first Works in different ways once he graduated college Miyazaki went Pearl as an animator and at 37 he directed his first movie Future Boy Conan since then he has produced many masterpieces as animation director how do you live is a children's Nobel by gen zabro Yoshino which Miyazaki wrote in elementary school the book had strong influence on him as you may know the Japanese title of the boy and the Heron directory translates as how do you live but the movie is not a directory based on this novel the movie has got its own story something completely different but here's the kicker in the movie there's this scene where the main character Master reads this very book and guess what that scene is super important in the movie so you can feel the movie more deeply if you have read the book the main character of the story is a boy named Coppell named after Copernicus he figures out all sorts of stuff about life and the world around him through his own experiences and some deep talks with his uncle the books basically designed to teach children how to be good humans you know all about ethics and morals and the scientific way of looking at the world Yoshino wrote This Book two years before the World War II kicked off Japan was heading into some serious militarism at the time when you read the book you can feel Justin's honest wish for children to stay human and kind no matter how rough the world gets and I found that they have the English version of the book so you can definitely check it out this may be a little surprise but let's talk about Italian director Fellini's movie the producer of the boy and the Heron actually showed his three movies to Miyazaki when Miyazaki was working on this movie the movies were eight and a half durator of the soul and fellaini's last movie The Boys of the moon now Miyazaki he sat down and watched all the three movies without even bringing afterwards he was like who's this guy it's like he's thinking the same thing as I am when I watched the boy and Heaven I especially for similarities with eight and a half if you are in two picks there's something you should know the boy and the Heron was also influenced by a children's novel called The Book of lost things written by John Connolly back in 2006. this novel is set in England during World War II you've got this 12 year old boy David who's crazy about books sadly he loses his mom to an earriness but then one day he hears her voice even Windows is gone this voice takes him into a world where various fairy terrorists are mixed together it's an adventure story about a boy trying to find his mom making powers and fighting monsters and growing up music got inspiration from this book for the boy and the Heron but he said in a Japanese magazine called switch that while the novel gave him inspiration his movie is not based on the novel I see some similarities especially the setups of the story and the relationship between reality and another world but at the end of the day the boy and the Heron has become entirely miyazaki's original story so let's sum it up like I said at the start you can totally enjoy the boy and the Heron without doing any homework if you want to I would say taking steps one two three will enhance your viewing experience steps 4 and Beyond well that's only if you are super into digging deep into the movie so that's it for today by the way this is the first time I've shown my face I hope you like this video I'll be discussing this latest Masterpiece from Miyazaki for a bit longer so feel free to share what kind of information you'd like to know before and after the movie comes out what kind of videos would you like me to make thanks for watching thanks for subscribing see you in the next video foreign [Music]
