well once again I only have about our half before work to fish but today I'm gonna meet I'm gonna use my favorite bait it's a rebel pop RP 70 and these baits they don't make anymore they made them back in I think the 80s I believe but about four years ago or so they did a remake of them just a limited quantity remake that's what this one is I do have two I think I bought on eBay for about 30 bucks they are the old original ones but these new ones from four years ago or so or just as good in my opinion what's different about them is they're bigger than the normal P 60 and 65 it's called a pop RP 70 it's a beautiful Friday morning we just had some thunderstorms row third overnight so I'm gonna try to work this Bank here and hopefully catch some fish here we go first cast with the P 70 as you can see I like walking this bait it serves like a normal popping action most people do with the popper with the p70 you can actually walk it like a small spook it actually stays an area for a while versus if it stays an area for a while versus moving a lot with this jumped over here on the other side of it up got one I stopped it and as soon as I started up again and hit there we go guys not a very big one but fun fish he nailed that pop oh look at that go I'll power P 70 small bass take a picture of them there we go definitely fun is my first top water fish of 2019 let's let him go when that fish hit last time I just stopped it and then I was like the first twitch after starting to back up that's when it hit you can definitely get them to hit on the moves like this but sometimes you do want to stop it and start it back up again this bait and technique is not very popular across the u.s. it's mainly a East Tennessee thing I had a friend of mine show me how to do it probably five or six years ago and I've loved doing it ever since its best starting around made which is what it is right now so me all the way through the fall really you catch fish doing it I like it early morning and at sunset of course like normal top water but you can also do it all day long you just throw it up under trees and overhangs that has shade dark stuff like that just wanna find shade and you can get them to bite it all day long you see what I'm doing with my rod you just do short two inches and slightly reel to handle while you're doing it and you want a high speed gear ratio reel scene take up the slack you also need a short rod you need like a six-foot rod no more than six six probably this one six thirty actually and that's part about the longest outlaw so this is a pop RP 70 and how I set it up is no split ring on the front short shank number two treble hook extra wide gap and number four feathered treble hook on the back and I have really good catch ratios of this I don't have many fish get off you will miss some but that's normal thing top water you just want let it take it once they take it I mean it hooks them up pretty good the best way to tie this is with a loop knot and I'll try to show you how to do it you want to take the end of your line and put it through the eye you know take you know get a pretty good amount of line out through the bait you're gonna take your two fingers point them around the line here and make a just twist it make a loop and you take your tag in and put it through that loop five times just wrap it around two three four and five and that leaves you with this loop that your hand your fingers are serve you want to put the bait through it all right you know take your tag in sent you down a little bit and just tighten it up and you're going to wet this big piece of the line you have out your big loop and take your main line and just tighten it down all the way but just right in front of the tattoo wet it down take the tag in the end of it and cinch it down and you do it pretty tight that's it you've got your loop here and that not with all the line wrapped around in it it won't come down here if you did it right then you just want to step up snip off some of the tag in and I'll leave a decent amount sticking out just in case that dog that night does slip some you'll be pulling that tag in the end you don't want to do it real tight because it can come through the knot so right there's the look knot and you can get better at it and tight pretty close like up here but that's good enough that works you just don't want it big enough so it gets your hooks get in it or anything like that that allows this bait to work free side to side and move around a lot better than a tying a direct not to the front of would be or tied to a split ring so that's my pop RP 70 setup so if the P 7 do you want a short rod this is a Dobyns champion it's a 630 4cb it's a crankbait rod but they really made it for these poppers it's 6 foot 3 inches and medium action it's got like a moderate tip so it's not it bends fairly back in the ride like a crankbait rod would but you want a short row like a 6 foot 2 6 3 I don't really want more than a 6 3 just because with a if you're in a boat you're gonna be up close to the bank and catch some real accurate up under trees and lay down and stuff you can still sling it a pretty good ways in open water but you want a short rod seen be accurate with it and you're also going to be working it straight down so you don't want the tip of your rod hit in the water real wise this is a Shimano Corrado is the 200 HG model gear ratio 7.2 to 1 and this rod pairs good there this reel pairs good at this rod it's a kind of small and compact fills get in the hand and it's good on this small compact rod I had a dial earth to to own it and it's kind of big and bulky this right this reel feels better on this rod so you want a high speed your issue like the seven or eight to one because you're taking up that slack line you definitely want to use mono or braid I prefer mono this is 20 pound Berkley big game it's always done good for me it handles good you want big on with this because you're gonna be getting in trees a lot and stuff like that and you can catch big fish with the suit so that is my pop are p70 set up 6-3 yard medium action seven point two to one reel 20 pounds bond filament okay I'll learn something about that pop RP 70 and how I like to use it if you have any questions just leave a comment in the section below and I'll get you squared away the best
