How to Play STARDEW VALLEY THE BOARD GAME! A Cinematic Tutorial!

welcome to stardew valley here you gotta work together with other players in order to fulfill grandpa's goals and restore the community center now in order to do so you're gonna have to fish and mine and water plants and dig for artifacts and make friends maybe even get married you have an entire year to achieve grandpa's goals and fix up the community center because if you can't then the georgia corporation is gonna take over this entire region hi everyone welcome back to the channel i am so excited to see you because today we're going to learn a video game turned board game called stardew valley so i'm going to teach you how to play this and if you like this tutorial and want to see more and help support this channel please consider subscribing and with that let's get going so first up we're going to get your resources together so the main board is going to go right in the center of your table then you can put the stardu dice the animal dice and the spouse pawn right next to the board next you want to shuffle all these following cards face down you have the villager deck you have the red items deck the blue epic items deck the green set of cards called the events deck and the gray mine event deck now you also want to shuffle the jojo tiles face down as well now this is the tile tray you can put this next to the board go ahead and pause the video here if you want to see which tiles belong in which spot at least according to how the game organizes it the artifacts are the tiles with an orange gear icon and on the other side they have a green crystal icon this side is the mineral tile you can put these in the gray bag fish tiles are the ones of course with the fish symbols and also with the trash can symbol you can put these in the blue bag now let's set up the actual game so you start off by planting a parsnip from the tile tray and this is a spring crop and you can tell because it has a pink top left corner and you can also put the parsnip in the second field slot notice how there's a normal side and a side with a star called the quality side you'll always start planting crops starting with the normal side face up and then just like the video game we got a forage for some trees so we have to set up the trees first by looking for these mushroom icons on the board mix 11 of the pink spring forageable tiles and put one face down in each of these mushroom icons on the board called a foraging spot and then look for four tree icons on the board as well and then put the pink spring trees there as well with the tree side facing up now we're gonna see which fish are in season so draw five random fish from the bag and put them in the water on the bottom of the board where it says the fish track you always want to fill the fish track starting with the rightmost slot then sort the mine level deck so that number one is on top and that number 12 is on the bottom and then put the stack face down in its slot on the top right corner of the board you can also shuffle the map cards deck and reveal one card to put in the slot right below the mines deck as well next up we have the seasons deck so for these you want to separate these cards by season and take out the four cards that say the last days of spring summer fall and winter and then shuffle each of these decks individually and put the last day card at the end of each deck so we're gonna start with spring and end with winter so you'll have your shuffle spring deck and the last card on the bottom of that and then a shuffled summer deck with the last summer card on the bottom of that and so on now put this entire complete deck on the season slot at the very bottom of the board now if it's your first time playing the game does recommend that you use the standard season cards with the green apple symbol called junomo so we'll go ahead and set it up that way for this video okay so we're almost done with the setup so now at the top of the board you'll see six of these slots these are community center rooms draw one random bundle card that matches each room and put it face down at each location and then shuffle these cards called the gold deck and then draw four cards to put face up on grandpa's letter on the top left corner of the board these are gonna act as goals for the game next you wanna have each player pick one out of the four player boards and then take a matching colored pawn then you can pick one of the four starting tools to claim and then put the tool on the zero space of your player board where it says starting tool and then the game says whoever recommended playing stardew valley is the one who gets to decide who is going to go first they're going to give them this starting token and you can all as a group decide whether it is a cat or a dog and then everyone starts off with three gold so here is an overall layout of the game and that is the setup so if you're liking this video so far leave a like on the video down below so now how do we play this game the goal is to work together in order to complete all of grandpa's objectives and restore the community center you have three phases in sardi valley first a new season is going to begin and the starting player draws a card from the season deck and then you perform whatever is listed on the card so for this very first card for spring it lists three symbols and page 10 of the rulebook will give you all the info you need about each symbol we're going to go over three just as an example so in this case you have a water drop and that means it's going to rain on your farm so all of your plants are going to grow and they'll move over one space over to the right the cat symbol means our pet is going to wander around to another player so the starting player moves to the player to the left and the shipping bin means that we can trade and sell resources because normally we'd have to go over to pierre shop in the town in order to do so so if you're playing the full game sometimes you'll also draw a festival card now these are very straightforward just follow what the card says in this case we would roll animal dice and if we roll a chicken then we gain five gold for each chicken rolled assuming that we already have chicken in the farm so that's it we just draw one season card now we move on to phase two so now here we just kind of talk and discuss about what we're gonna do for the very first day of the season here we can also trade any item or cards and talk about what we want to do on our turn and then we can visit any part of stardew valley by taking your pawn and putting it on a rectangle label that is shown on the map that's it discuss trade and set our pawns at a certain location and then we'll move on to phase three which is the action phase so again whoever has the pet is the one that's gonna go first and they're gonna take all their actions before the next person goes so for your next turn you can either take two actions wherever you currently are but you cannot move if you do that or if you take one action you can then move right after and then take a second action at your new location you don't have to perform an action if you don't want to but actions are specific to the place that you're currently at and there are 13 actions total we're gonna go over them one by one don't worry i'm gonna make it super simple for you so if we're at the farm which is this huge white square over here naturally we can water our crops which means that they are gonna grow and we're gonna move the crop tiles over to the right and if they come off the track that means they are ripe enough for us to collect and go into our inventory if you don't have enough space in your inventory you do have to discard a resource in order to make room or discard the crop that just became ripe now there are two things to note here the three space does count as both a red and a green now why does that matter because sometimes when you're drawing a season card you can actually draw a crow symbol that means crows are going to eat your crops so red crows will eat the red crops and green crows will eat the green crops you would pick one crop to get discarded from the crop that's currently located in each section now the other action that you can do at a farm is to collect from animals here you will roll three animal dice and once you have animals they'll generate a resource for each die roll so if two players have two cows and they roll two cow icons then you get four bottles of milk all right so i am throwing a ton of information at you let's break it down real quick and see what's going on first player drew a season card and then we resolved it step by step and now we are planning out because we're moving from phase one to phase two we drew a season card and now we're planning out exactly what we're gonna do in our turn we're setting our pawns to a specific location that's on the board now in the action phase which is phase three we can choose to perform two actions and not move or take an action move once and then take another action at your new location so if i were to go to the farm i can either water my crops by moving them over to the right or i can collect from animals by rolling the three animal dice which will tell us how many things that they're making see it's not bad right so now let's go over to the forest and we'll do some river fishing now if you want to go fishing you're going to have to make sure that you're visiting a spot that there's actually fish in so if i'm river fishing then i have to make sure that there are blue fish on the fishing track then in order to try to catch a fish or multiple fish you roll all three star new dice and each die can be assigned to one fish you can actually catch more than one fish so if this is my role i can actually catch one walleye and one shad since they both cost one juno each now you also have legendary fish which stay here on the fish track and they never get discarded from season cards and if a fish track movement is going to push them off the board they actually just get returned to the bag because normally fish don't return to the bag some fish do have a crab pot requirement now that means that you'll have to bait them by discarding bug meat so you don't actually roll dice for these you still do roll dice for fishing in general so it is possible for you to catch a fish and still catch a craplod fish all in one action now a couple other things about fishing if you get a bad roll you can if you want to take a trash tile and all it does is just free up a slot on the fish track and also if you see treasure chests they'll have a left arrow and that means that if you catch a fish to the left of the treasure chest then that chest is going to get discarded and then you gain an item card and last thing to reiterate make sure fish do not return to the bag unless it is one of the four legendary fish all right so now let's move on to the ranch so let's go ahead and visit marny here we can buy animals so we can take care of them at the farm you can buy an animal as long as you have a building to take care of them for like the coop for chicken for instance and you also have to make sure you have the gold required in order to pay for the animal now if you're wondering where you get buildings from you get them from the mountain so let's go ahead and go there next if you're at the mountain and you have enough resources like wood and stones and gold you can visit robin in order to construct buildings all you do is discard those items and take the building in order to buy a coop and the top of the tile will tell you exactly which animals will need this kind of housing now since you're at the mountain you can also explore the mine and this is how you get stones and ores and geos and a bunch of other resources if you explore the mine you roll two stardew dice and the current map card will tell you what your role means so if i rolled a star drop in a heart i could get one geod or two ores now you do have to be careful because some mines do have monsters in them if you end up getting a skull you actually activate the monster ability you can find the monster ability on the my level card right above it this card is going to tell you every resource available on this particular mine along with the type of monsters here and the monster ability like the slime for instance for this one nothing happens and to avoid spoiling any other monster levels just know that other monster abilities will trigger as well now some cards will also show you staircases this is how you're going to descend down the mind to the next level again just follow the symbols all described here to see exactly what happens as you roll different symbols and once you reach the final level of the mind you can actually pick up an epic item so we can buy buildings we can explore the mine the third option is to of course do some fishing specifically lake fishing exact same thing as before except now you can fish for the green fish all right so we visited half the places already but remember how i was saying you can perform two actions back to back or perform one action move and then perform another action at your new location so let's go ahead and talk about moving in order to move you just follow along one of these white paths one space away from your current location but what's important is that when you're moving this is how you can forage so remember those forging tiles we put down during the setup you can reveal a forging tile that's adjacent to any one of the three paths you're moving so for example let's say i'm moving from the mountain to the town i can reveal this tile or i can also reveal this tile if i reveal this one and it ends up being a worm tile then you want to look at the bottom right symbol the orange gear icon means that i just dug and found an artifact the green crystal means i was digging and i found a mineral so to resolve this tile i'm going to discard the forging tile and then draw from the artifact and mineral bag but you want to make sure that you're only keeping the resource that was shown if i instead reveal a forageable then these just go in my inventory and trees are how i get wood quick thing to note when you're foraging it does not count as an action it's just part of your movement so you're getting the trend around here right notice how a lot of places are linked as i'm moving towards the mountain from the forest i forage for wood and then when i get to the mountain i'm visiting robin in order to build a coop and then i'm going to make my way back to the ranch and since i have this coop now i can buy a chicken then i can make my way to the farm and when i get there i spend an action in order to roll three animal dice and if i roll two chicken then i get two eggs and so on and so on so let's go ahead and wrap up the town beach and forge actions town first here you can visit the community center and reveal and donate to bundles remember this is one of the end game conditions to restore the community center so to reveal a bundle you discard a number of heart tokens equal to the number of players so if we're playing with two players then we have to discard two heart tokens and then you reveal the leftmost face down bundle card or replace a revealed bundle card with the new face of bundle card in order to match that particular room you complete the bundle when players have donated the total amount of what's listed on the bundle equal to the number of players so here i'm going to donate two hearts in order to reveal the leftmost face down card which is in the fish tank now this one says it requires any river or legendary fish i can donate one sturgeon and one legendary glacier fish that i caught and now this room is fully restored so i discard that bundle and then i gain an item card that i can give to any player when you restore the final room in the community center you get a second opportunity to pick up another epic item now aside from the community center you can also go to pierre's general store here you can buy seeds and sell as many resources as you like any crop costs only one gold in order to plant that crop and the icon listed on the bottom right of the plant is actually the value that the crop is going to sell for the water drop number is where you're going to place the plant in the farm and only one crop goes into each plot so you cannot stack crops and the third thing that you can do in a town is to make friends and there are a lot of things going on with friends so let's break it down first you draw the top card of the villager deck you can gift them a resource in order to make them your friend which will be listed on the left side of the card that means they're going to love you because you gave them an item that they absolutely love all you do is discard that particular resource so for penny here all i have to do is discard a parsnip and then i gain two hearts now if it's fall when i'm meeting penny it's her birthday so that means that she gives you one bonus heart any friend that has the same birthday as the season that you're landing in is going to give you one extra heart and notice here how penny also has resources on the right side so you can't give resources that's listed on the right side of the card because then the villager in this case penny is going to hate you for it despite how much i am busted my boss go into the mines for that rock i swear now you can also give penny any other unlisted resource which will earn you one heart which means that she does like you for it now if you see this icon that means that you can also marry the villager but you have to have gained the mermaid's pendant now if you have that pendant you're going to attach it to one of your villager friends take the purple spouse pawn and during the planning phase you can actually put the purple pawn on any location on the map and they give you one additional action at that location and they have access to everything that you have they just can't trigger end of turn effects and we'll get to those and there are two more things so each villager will also have an ability listed that you gain and if you drew a villager but you don't want to be their friend you discard them can you imagine going to one of your friends and be like hey i know we've been friends for like 10 years and it's spring so uh your birthday is around this time but i have no resources that you love or that you like so i'm discarding you okay so we're almost done hanging there we're gonna visit the beach now but for that super easy because it's just ocean fishing and you know how that works by now and now we get to the final location which is the forge here you can open geodes by going to clint you spend one action to break open any number of geos that you accumulated in your inventory so you roll one stardu die and just refer to this chart on the board in order to see your result and then discard that geode if you end up gaining an ore you can actually flip the geo tile to the other side you can also donate to the museum so here if you have artifacts or minerals you can just visit gunther and donate them here again you spend one action in order to donate any number of artifacts or minerals that you have in your inventory and notice here how they all have letters on them now that means that those artifacts that you're donating have to have letters that match to the slot that they're going to question marks are considered wild and they can go in any slot and this is a third way that you can gain epic items because if you fill up one entire column then the museum is going to grant you one epic item all right so we've started our season we talked about our plan and then on our turn we either performed double actions at one location or move action and then move actions like we've done at the many places that we've talked about so far now at the end of your turn there are four different things that you can trigger but you can only trigger one of them at the end of your turn you can build your own staircase by discarding a number of stones equal to your player count and descend down the mine by revealing the next map card so again two players two stones there goes the staircase i reveal the next map card and boom i'm on to the next level the second thing that you can do in this game is to pet your animal so you can discard the listed heart tokens to flip them over in order to flip your animals over to the happy side the third thing is that we can discard one heart token or five gold in order to remove the joja tile these are revealed from season cards and they will say something pretty bad like no fishing is allowed at the lake and lastly you can upgrade your starting tool by discarding the resource listed on it so if it's the end of my turn and i want to upgrade my level 0 training rod to a level 1 bamboo rod then i have to discard 5 gold now when i fish i can refill one of the fishing dice and lastly at the end of each season you'll see the end of season card you just follow us listed on there and you'll also notice that on your player board it also says profession upgrades at the end of every season you gain one profession upgrade that you can put here so since i started with fishing i draw two professional upgrades and then pick one to store right over here then you just keep going and you all win if you're able to achieve all of grandpa's goals and simultaneously restore six of the community center rooms before the last season ends bam you win if not then the jojo corporation will take over and you lose now the game also does have different difficulties and game length that you can adjust as well along with some solo play and that my friends is stardew valley thank you all so much for being here for
