we're laying tiles and embellishing walls that's right it's azul from plan b games [Music] in this crafty competitive mosaic maker two to four players take on the role of tile laying artists ordered by the king of portugal to decorate the walls of his incredible royal palace by drafting tiles from various factories players aim to beautify their personal wall with the best combination of colors in order to score the most points and win the game setup begins with each player receiving a player board and one scoring marker each board has two sides use the side with the colored wall for your first few games we'll talk about the gray variant side shortly players set their score marker to zero on their score track next depending on the number of players set the factory displays in a circle in the center of the table in a two-player game you're gonna want five factories three players mean seven factories and four players nine factories then you're going to fill the azul bag with all 100 tiles which are composed of 20 tiles in each of five colors select a starting player the rule book says whoever last visited portugal but for you non-travelers let's say whoever last retiled their bathroom then give them the starting player marker that player then fills each factory display with four tiles drawn randomly from the bag gameplay occurs in rounds each divided into three phases factory offer wall tiling and preparing for the next round first in the factory offer phase the starting player places the starting player marker in the center of the factory displays and then makes a selection by taking all the tiles of the same color from any one factory display they then transfer the remaining tiles on that display to the center of the circle the player then adds the tiles they selected to one of the five horizontal pattern lines on the left side of their player board each line has between one and five spaces tiles must be placed right to left on the chosen line and tiles on a single line must all be of the same color once all spaces of a pattern line are filled the line is considered complete additionally a player cannot place the tile in a pattern line that already has that color of tile in the corresponding line of their wall if a player ever selects tiles they cannot or don't want to place in their pattern line they must place them on the floor line from left to right these tiles have fallen to the floor and provide negative points during scoring so the less of them the better on subsequent rounds a player may choose to take all the tiles of one color from the center area as well the first person to do so also takes the starting player marker adding it to their floor line though they will receive a point penalty they also get the first pick of tiles in the next round once a player has made their tile selection and placed it on their pattern line or floor line play passes clockwise to the next player turns continue until all the tiles have been drafted after which we continue to the wall tiling phase where players all simultaneously score points based on their tile allocation each player reviews their pattern lines from top to bottom checking to see which lines are complete if a line is complete they take the rightmost tile on that line and place it on the corresponding color space in the same row of that wall they then immediately score points based on its placement they then remove the leftover tiles from that pattern line and place them back in the box any tiles in lines which aren't complete stay on the player board for now when scoring points for placing a tile on the wall players follow two steps first they check for any tiles horizontally adjacent to the newly played tile they score points for the number of tiles linked in this way including the placed tile for instance in this placement we would score three points they then do the same for vertically adjacent tiles counting the place tile once again so in this example i gain another three points if a tile is placed with no adjacent tiles then it just scores one point this will likely happen a few times in the first round as the wall is just beginning its life as a wall but continual placement in a strategic manner can net players exponential points in future rounds after players have reviewed their pattern lines they then check their floor line and deduct points labeled on each build space the players remove all tiles from their floor line and place them back in the box because they're really just you know the drags of the tile world except for the starting player marker which that player will keep for the next round finally in the preparing the next round phase the player with the starting marker refills the factory displays with four tiles each from the bag if the bag is ever empty just refill it with all those tiles from the box gameplay continues to the next round rounds continue until one player completes a horizontal line of five tiles on their wall at the end of a wall tiling phase then the game ends and players score final points as listed on the bottom right side of their board each player receives two points for each completed horizontal line on their wall seven points for each complete vertical line on their wall and ten points for each color with all five tiles placed somewhere on their wall the player with the most points wins the game in future matches players can use the variant side of the board which features a grey wall the game rules are essentially the same except players may now place their tiles on any space in the corresponding line during the wall tiling phase they are still limited to one tile of each color on any vertical or horizontal lines don't go crazy okay in that way it's similar to the front of the board and that's azul it's a great puzzle for all levels of players it's perfect for the appetizer for any game night not like a food appetizer don't eat it it's a game appetizer i'm
