trade quick tips sharpen your skill in this trade quick tip video we're going to show you how to wrap the handle of your favorite survival knife with paracord using a 360 degrees strider wrap join us as we discuss the advantages to having a paracord wrap knife handle and get some tips from our experts along the way modern knife handle scales come in lots of shapes and sizes and are made from a variety of durable slip resistant materials but what if you want to extend the usefulness of your knife by adding a paracord handle a well-done paracord wrap knife grip can be just as sure and durable as handle sleds while giving you a length of emergency cordage that can be removed and used in a pinch but once you remove and use your paracord how do you rewrap the handle and if you are starting from scratch how do you replace the handle slabs with paracord to start with the solution is simple the 360 degree Strider paracord wrap so to start you'll need some paracord a lighter and a knife many neck knives such as our SCH F 47 ta SC H F 46 an SCH F 46 TAS are sold with a strider paracord wrap handle however this wrap can be used in virtually any knife once the handle scales are removed but for our example we'll replace the paracord on our SCH F 40 78 tanto blade neck knife your knife will probably be out of its sheath as you add paracord to its handle use extreme caution when performing this task we recommend placing duct tape over the cutting edge of the knife blade and wearing a quality leather glove on the hand that you intend to hold the knife with before we start you may want to pre wrap your knife before doing the outer wrap of the handle although pre rapping is not absolutely necessary it will help lock your outer paracord wrap onto the knife and provide you with an additional length of emergency cordage to pre wrap the handle remove the seven inner strands from the length of paracord leaving only the outer nylon shell to begin the pre-wrap bend the paracord shell at the two inches mark and place the tail length vertically on the knife handle so that it faces the butt of the knife handle and then tightly wrap the entire handle horizontally once you reach the butt end of the knife lift the last wrap of paracord and slide the tail end under pull it tightly through before removing any excess cordage and burning the end with a lighter while the tail end of the paracord is still hot use the bottom of the lighter to press it flat so that it secures to the rest of the wrap for your outer handle wrap cut another length of paracord the length of paracord needed is determined by the size of the knife for smaller knives start with at least 5 feet while larger knives may take up to 8 or 9 feet it's better to start with too much paracord and have to cut it then too little and have to start all over with another piece now be sure to leave the inner strands intact and use a lighter to seal the ends if your knife has pre-drilled holes in its handle string the paracord through the hole closest to the blade of the knife and feed about half of the paracord through the hole if there are not any pre-drilled holes close to the blade situate the paracord horizontally behind the handle at the halfway point of the paracord hold the paracord on the back of the handle and the knife with blade down using your non-dominant hand grasp the two tails of extra paracord in your dominant hand bring your index finger and thumb under the paracord like this now twist the paracord 180 degrees forming an X in the center of the handle continue to twist the cordage an additional 180 degrees this time bringing the handle of the knife through the gap created between the paracord and your thumb and index finger to complete the first 360 degree wrap the backside of the knife is now facing you hold the previously wrapped side tight with your non-dominant hand and reposition your strong hand grasping the extra cord and placing your thumb and index fingers under the paracord as you did before you are now ready for the next rep repeat this process for the entire length of the knife handle while keeping each wrap as tight as possible check the tightness of the wrap as you go and make sure the knots are aligned nicely in the center of the handle for the entire length as you approach the end of the knife handle make one final wrap before slipping the ends of the paracord through any pre-drilled holes in the knife if there are multiple bud end holes feel free to experiment to get the look and tightness of wrap that you want use an overhand loop knot to secure the handle wrap a second over the hand loop knot can then be placed at the end of the paracord to create a handy lanyard for your new favorite paracord wrap knife wrapping
