I see so many chairs and sofas that have a great shape but outdated fabric today I'll share how to transform a sofa with DIY paint I got that sofa right back there at a thrift store for $20 I like the fact that it's velvet I like the pin tucking I do not like the color or the skirt we're going to rip off the skirt and we're going to paint it yeah there we go I just have to rip off the rest of it and we can get started painting it came off super easy and then where there's the raw edges we're going to add nail hits it's already looking better DIY paint is made from a clay base it is very soft pure and highly pigmented when diluted it can be used like a dye to change the color of fabric without creating cracking or a rough crunchy texture mix three parts water and one part paint work into small sections dampening the fabric first with a spray bottle full of water taking care to work the paint into the fibers so it doesn't sit on the surface it's better to add several light coats of paint rather than a few thicker ones let each layer dry completely and sand in between I also like to use a sanding sponge to work the paint into the fabric while it's still wet this will create even coverage and avoid a tie-dyed look I covered the whole sofa with the bohemian blue I'm not sure if I'm gonna put a top coat on it or not I might take the liquid patina and dilute that with water and spray the whole couch to kind of seal in the color I have no idea what would happen if someone sat on the couch wearing white there's just this little section right here that's left to do I put four layers of paint on it needs it's really watery you're basically dyeing the sofa so that all the pigments just soak into the fibers if you don't use this you're going to have kind of a tie-dye look and it won't be even you make sure that all of the paint gets spread around really good you get it nice and worked in like so four coats of this but you have to keep in mind that this sofa cost $20 when I'm done with it it's going to look like it came from Anthropologie if you have a couple thousand dollars to spend on a brand-new sofa from Anthropologie that would totally be better but if you don't this is an option I decided to switch out the legs so the sofa would sit a little higher I found these at Home Depot for $3 each I painted my legs with a layer of gravel road and black velvet after the paint dried completely I distressed the color back with a damp cloth and sealed in the finish with our all-natural clear wax the final step is to attach brass embellishments and upholstery nails I measured and marked where I wanted my tacks to go with chalk however I had a difficult time getting them nailed in straight after about an hour and several bent tacks I gave up cut the pins off and glued them on velvet is probably the most challenging of all the fabrics if you want to paint a sofa if you rub it like this it's not coming off the little tiny bit does come off and you see that it's as clear liquid patina we're going to water it down and we're going to work it into the sofa with the sanding sponge and that will lock in all of the color liquid patina is a beautiful topcoat for furniture a sealer a decoupage and a transfer gel all in one I applied the patina just like the paint diluting it with water and working it in with the sanding sponge then I decided that the brass was too shiny so I aged all of the tacks with the toxic compound that you can find on Amazon I provided the links to these products in the description box if you use this be careful to avoid contact with the skin second time I decided to try a hot glue gun this did not work they popped off and it created a mess so I went back to using e6000 this is the sofa it's done it's not scratchy it's not crunchy it's soft color doesn't come off see there's a close-up this is actually the first video in a new series on my channel called the handmade home a whole interesting story to tell you about this house why I moved into it and the new series and the house tour click the link below it'll take you to the next video and let me know in the comments if you've ever painted upholstery before and how it turned out and so yeah so thanks for watching and I will see you in the next video to find out about my new series and to see the house tour subscribe there's a new video coming this week and to find a DIY paint retailer in your area or to sell it in your store click the link below thanks for watching
