welcome everybody it's Phil back with professional painter and decorator and um we're gonna go let's do a series of Back to Basics I'm going to be talking about how you paint a windowsill and if you can see that there you know which window so I'm going to be painting now I'll apologize straight away because I think some of these video shots might go a little bit silhouetted but never mind no um we're going to be painting a windowsill I know there's a few ways that people are doing it and if you don't know how to paint a windowsill I think what you're probably doing is just bang a load of paint on them coming a bit unstuck so this video is going to be quite simple it's going to be quite a short one you'll probably enjoy it because we'll be under 30 minutes but I'll just tell you the process that I've gone through to get this this windowsill where it is now so um just bear with me I'm going to get my paint out and I'll move the camera around and let's talk you through it foreign probably won't see me I'm just going to be moving the camera around right windowsill I don't need to tell you how to Rubble window seal down but the process is I've just got some used um sandpaper because it's only needed a nib down just to get it all um nice and ready and prepared for painting I've obviously well say obviously not everybody will know I've painted all the walls I've done the ceiling first the process sealing I've done the walls they're two coated and if you probably just can't see one I've done round the window reveals I've just slightly gone on to the windowsill so that only needed a sand down I've dusted it all off and I say to people when you're doing windowsills even when you like spraying stuff I have a damp cloth with me some people haven't got a tack rag you can tack rack that down if you wanted but particularly I've had the win I've had the window open and stuff can blow in and blow about if you have a damp cloth with you and that's just a ordinary Jays cloth from a kitchen if you've sanded that down and you're happy with it just go over it with a damp cloth that will then get rid of any of the last dust that might be on that surface even though you've dusted it down and proper dust the brush dust it all off well I'll do it again dust it all off like that but just to be making sure that any last little bits of duster off I just wipe over it with a damp cloth like that now there is an element that there is moisture still on there today you've probably seen the thumbnail I'm using scuffex Benjamin Moore scuffex so it's a water-based paint I don't mind if there is a little bit of dampness on that windowsill because that windowsill helps that that little bit of dampness on that windowsill helps the application of the paint does that make sense probably not if you're doing this with oil undercoat oil gloss or even if you're egg shelling this or a leg shell which is to dust up two coats of oil eggshell on you wouldn't clearly you wouldn't be going over it with a damp cloth and leaving it damp you'd want to dry it off or just stick with the attack rag but I'm using Benjamin Moore I've got it to my kettle I'll go on about it make sure you work from one side of the kettle one side of the kettle don't use both don't be I've seen Alex paints you know you're slapping it about like you're don't do that don't do that right lecturing again I've made sure this is all cleaned down so if there was any spots of paint off from the Emulsion in around it we know that's all good and I'm ready to paint we've now got it all dusted off we've got it wiped down and I'm ready to go and you've got to say to me Phil what what brushes are you using right to start with I've got the Monarch it's the oval Monarch one and a half inch and it's the slash cut you can see that up here so slash cut it's one of those and to do the filling when I explain it when we come to painting it to do the filling I'm quite liking and then I've been a bit negative about these two fussy blokes brushes because they're very soft and they're very long but you know what I find these are very nice for laying off when you're doing windowsills so we'll be using the two fussy blokes two inch which is 50 mil the length out on that is quite long you can probably just see that but it does apply paint nicely to a windowsill to lay off not so good on the door or cutting in and things like that on skirting boards or anything but for laying off on windowsills I'm quite liking it so I am using this thank you very much to fussy blokes right let's get back to this how are we going to paint what's the process of painting this windowsill I'm going to see if I can just clamp you in that position right let me talk you through it there is an Underside to this cell here now I have painted that Underside in with the Emulsion because the wrap round underneath is only about an inch now I find it neater depending on the width if you've got a big wrap around it's probably better to paint it in with your windowsill now on this job I've done a couple of rooms and I've kept it all the same because they're only narrow little strips what I will be doing is painting up to that bottom what is it well you can see it convex edge of that windowsill I'll just paint up to that neat Edge there but I won't be taking it all the way around to cut into the wall because it's it's not wide enough it doesn't it's not going to make any difference but the process right I'm going to bring you down here and I'm going to start over here how it works right you start with that corner there so let me just show you what I'm going to do I've loaded my brush up and this is scuff ax in Chantilly Lace and I'm neatly going up to that edge there not all the way neatly just going as close as I possibly can because this is the first coat and I bring it I don't know you can see I'm just bringing it around that nose ending right that's the first part of painting that I'm going to do just to there now let's put a little bit more paint on your brush working from one side of kettle this convex Edge there I am going to brush up from the bottom so it gets the bottom Edge neatly and then brings it round to the face and then just slightly Lay It Off all the way I'm not putting too much paint on I'm just getting the coverage laid off I'm coming all the way along here you might just miss me off camera I might just have to move the camera and what I'm not doing is getting a fatty Edge across that face because what I'm going to do is just knock it off with the tips of the bristles there you go tips of the bristles not with any more paint and that is just nicely coating up that edge now this water-based paint is lovely it doesn't go off too quick I can work it and even though I'm talking to you I'm going to try and work as quick as I can because it is water-based and I'm coming to this edge here now I've got to that corner I can just see a little bit of fluff because it's got rid of that I'm back on this corner neatly cutting in as close as I possibly can get to the wall now all the way around doesn't have to be all the way up because you'll be coming back with a second coat and I'm still here I'm cutting this end piece in neatly up against the wall just laying it off right got it neat there laying it off Feathering that edge right what we're going to do now I'll keep the camera there you won't see me I'm just going to bed I'm going to put it there so you can see what I'm doing I'm just bedding the bristles in loading it up this is really exaggerating we're really loading that brush up and just wiping it down so there's not too much on it let's get that there so this paint on there make sure I've got no bits off the base of the Kettle I've just wiped that again right we're coming up to this edge here and I'm going to cut in to the walls neat as I possibly can bring it all the way along if you're a bit slightly wavy don't worry because you'll catch it on the second coat and I'm then going to start working quickly these are new windows it's had a plastic trim fitted but it has been corked it's not add silicone on it I'm going to work quickly I'm just going to cut into that cork all the way along it now this isn't too longer is longer a word this isn't too big a windowsill so I can actually bring all this all the way across to this end if it was a longer windowsill you might just want to bring it across in a section so there we are and I'm going to bring this Edge in there and bring that around I'm happy with that bringing it around just laying that off there we go now we've got the filling pot to do I'm using these two flushy blokes I'm starting at this end and you can see which direction I'm going across the grain of the wood I'm putting it on I'm doing probably what am I doing just I'll say a third at a time and you can see I'm Crow's nesting it every direction and laying it off horizontally I'm coming up to where we're cutting against the wall getting that back in neat I'm going to lay it off opposite direction toward them going wipe the brush down with the tips of these brick bristles it's neatly get into that corner and Lay It Off tips and if you see my action I'll slow it down I'll go one way and I'll flick that brush around can you see what I do so I bring it in from the other side so every couple of Strokes I'll flip it round now I'm happy with that let's carry on for the next second third one two thirds let's second third two thirds right so Crow's nesting I'm laying off horizontal getting enough on and then literally start with a brush stroke very soft with the tips of the bristles just wipe your brush down Lay It Off keep rotating your brush around so you're not putting too much on got hair it's probably off my nose and I'm laying that off right you can see them at the bottom end now and I'm doing exactly the same this paint hasn't gone off so I can blend it back in and that's a lot of fear people have with water-based paints and some paints do dry off on you very quickly but this Benjamin Moore scuff X is lovely so you go I'm just Crow's nesting it laid it off horizontal and now I'm going with the length I'm going all the way down rotate your brush around bring these back in and I can even just bring it in from the other side now just here or just there if you see you might see a little bit of grinning depending on what paint using might might be a little bit of grinning of the Emulsion paint showing through don't worry about that because when that's dried if you do see a bit of grinning just touch it in before you come to doing your final coat obviously when it's dried touch it and let it dry off again and Away you go right I'm going to leave that for now I'm going to come back to do a conclusion once I've done the second coat so um thanks for listening well let's move over there two fussy Blake's roll uh I haven't rolled it I've enrolled it if you want to roll it you can do but still lay off this is this is the basics of brushing too fussy two fussy blokes two inch and I've got an inch and a half monarch um oval really nice brush right I'll see in a minute well I'll see when that's dried welcome back I'm going in for round two the only difference this time for the second coat is I've got a murka gold Flex p150 Link in the description down below if you want to purchase any of these from Amazon because I've got an Affiliated link Affiliated I think that's the word so all I'm going to do this is a worn down one because I don't want to scratch this surface too much the trouble I'll say the trouble is when you've got water-based paints you don't want to be overly heavily scratching the surface to put scratch marks in it so we'll go with something a bit softer and I'm literally just nibbing anything that might have fell onto this sill while I've add the window open so all I'm doing is just going around that convex front edge just around the ball nose ends just nipping it down really Softly making sure everything's off it and as I said before I'm not doing under that edge because it's owning minuscule it's probably an inch if that so I've done that I'm going to dust it off that's in my hand just dust it off get any last bits of dust away let that fall to the floor the Windows shut I've got The Damp Jay's cloth again just going to wipe over that just to kill it any last bit of fall out wiping it round and as I said earlier I'm not worried if that leaves a little bit of water sediment on because it does help with the flow out of the paint so I'm back with it I've washed out the brushes this is back with the Monarch I'm going to cut in and I'm going to finish it with the two fussy blokes so um should we fast forward this bit yeah go on then oh watch How We Do It [Music] [Music] thank you thank you [Music] there we have it me chickadees you've seen what I've done there still in a wet State and it's drying off nicely this scuffex I would say probably that first coat 20 minutes to 30 minutes it's gone off I've re-coated after about oh before dinner so a good two and a half hours since the first a bit of recording and it dries nice it's really nice paint the flow out of it and you can't see it because we're just going to silhouette it the flow out you don't get that Brush Mark that you get I don't want to drop anything on it you can see brush marks but they flow out nicely and the brush marks aren't like when you imagine putting a cheap acrylic based um water-based paint on that will flow out really nice and as you could see as I came along this Edge there I was knocking off any fatty Edge that was from that well let's call it that um concave uh sorry convex edge around there so that is going to flow out nicely I won't open the window till it started to go off but I'm quite happy how it's cutting neatly against the wall gone around those and I've gone around those I know people are going to shout at me and say Phil I use a roller on it I know you might use a roller on it but if we go back to basics don't run before you can walk if you know how to handle a brush you get a lovely brush finish on that without it making it look ropey and horrible so all I'm going to say to you now is if you don't know the process of doing a room and I'm just going to spin round do you win Sills first this is painting do you win the seals first then drop onto your doors and frames and then finish with your skirting boards because what you don't want to be doing is starting your skirting board picking up a load of fluff and then coming to a seal like this and put in um all over your Sills so just be mindful of that and that is also the reason why you don't work out of paintings because you don't want to if I've got half a tin of brand spanking new paint or pure virgin paint in there let's call it virgin paint what I don't want to be doing is contaminating that by picking up some rubbish that might have been on the floor or on Sills or anything top of door frames and putting it back into there if you've only got a small amount of paint like I have in this paint kettle work outside one side of the kettle if I've only got that amount of paint in there and I know I've contaminated it do you know what I've been it that or you strain it so on that note please watch the videos at the end thanks very much listening to me those that are giving me super thanks which are below brilliant those that buy me a coffee I'm not sleeping at night thank you very much for that as well coffee is lovely even though I might use it towards Pizza we'll say thank you very much see on the next one and hopefully you know now how to paint to Winter sale properly
