Salut c’est Géraldine. Welcome to Comme une Française TV, live in France, feel at home. When you’re in a café in France, let’s say the Café de la Paix in front of the Opéra, you want to order coffee like a French person, NOT like a tourist. After all, that way you’ll also get the best service from the waiter. That’s what we’ll be looking at in today’s episode of Comme une Française TV. This week on Comme une Française TV, we’ll see 9 kinds of coffee AND how to properly order them. 1. Just coffee un café s’il vous plaît. Coffee please Je vais prendre un déca. “Je vais prendre” is a very French way of ordering something. Déca stands for “décaféiné”, or “decaffeinated” Deux expressos, merci. to espressos thanks Ce sera un américain pour moi. Un américain is also called “café allongé”. It’s a big cup of coffee. It means “I’ll have a big cup of coffee” 2. With milk Un noisette et un verre d’eau “Une noisette” means “hazelnut”. It’s an espresso with a little milk. We say “un noisette” stands for “un café noisette” And a glass of water. Je voudrais un café crème. Un café crème is a coffee with cream or milk (more than in a “noisette” coffee) You can also say “un crème” as we said for “un américain” before. Un cappucino s’il vous plaît Pareil. Merci. If you’re with someone, you can say “me too”. A cappucino please. Same! Thanks. 3. Gourmet coffees Un café liégeois Le même pour moi. The café liégeois is made of ice-cream and coffee sauce. Le même pour moi means “Same for me.” There’s also the “chocolat liégeois” made of chocolate. I LOVE this one. Un café gourmand pour moi. A café gourmand is a dessert that’s made of “un café” and tiny “pâtisseries” that we call “mignardises” on the side. It’s delicious. And it’s a great way to try different specialties at once. 4. Bonuses Vous avez du thé ? Do you have tea? Oh and herbal tea is called “une infusion” or “une tisane”. Not “thé aux herbes”. 5. Warning Un café au lait is for breakfast at home. It’s not something to ask for in a café. Et toi ? Your French will ONLY improve if you put into practice what you’ve learnt on Comme une Française TV.
