you know what i can tell you one thing right now i'm having a mulch better day than you because today's a mulch day all right so we got mulch going in today black mulch it's gonna be awesome i'm gonna give you some tips and tricks for how to mulch around your house okay there's some really wrong ways to do it there's some okay ways to do it and there's some awesome epic ways to do it and that's what i want you guys to know how to do so here we go let's load the truck up attach the trailer and we'll be on the road in no time [Applause] [Music] we're all hitched up let's get out of here and we'll put some sides on this just real quick i wanted to show you the stroll batteries they're looking happy roll batteries coming out i need to plant these though that will be so much happier if i plant them just some leftovers from last year if this awesomeness josh yes mulch today here we go all right folks we're at this mulch place here got all kinds of material i mean piles and piles it's kind of crazy got sand right there and we're headed to get some black mulch there's a bit of a line we're offloading stuff first so that we can have room for the most to go and then after that we'll be able to load it back in on the top from here boom we're ready everything's all strapped down right in here too good let's go let's knock it out yep guys we're here we've got the mulch first step for any kind of landscape bed you want to go ahead and clean the bed of weeds let's see we've got some violets popping up we'll pull those out by the roots make sure i'm getting all the roots there and then we've got some edges here with some grass and pull that out over there looks like that's mostly cleaned up we'll go through we'll blow the any little leaves out clean it up see if we've got some more violets here that we need to clean up okay we have cleaned out the beds next step is we want to eliminate as much of the extra work as possible i always like to put a [Applause] old-fashioned tarp down wherever i'm going to be getting the mulch just tuck it in and then uh that's where you're gonna line up your wheelbarrows best tool for moving wheelbarrows i mean best tool for you removing mulch is this guy right here wide pitch fork it's gonna save so much time worth the investment and then if you really want to get efficient load your wheelballs up as high as possible without them dropping too much and then also people go like this i notice that you tend to like get tiny little bits but the best way to do it is really go in there pull and then lift up get a big old-fashioned let's go let's say gulp load it in load it in the less you spill less work for later and then uh load it on up now uh one more just one more step i was just showing you how to make your wheelbarrows up but honestly the more the higher you load it up less you have to trips you have to make so that's pretty good pile there let me show you another thing real quick so [Music] what i like to do is before i do a new job i'll take a rake or a hoe come along the edge and pull the material back in from the edge and the second i'm gonna get the blower and blow it back up in too that just means that when you put in new mulch it's not going to be overflowing the edges so i'm pulling it back you know spread it out out here but we're working on making sure now if this wasn't a hard age you know this is rocks but if it was the dirt i would come through with the weed eater and recreate that edge or even cut it in if need be so see how it's starting to fall out here that will start to happen see it's falling out here too i think that's because the mulch is too high on the edges and it'll start to kill your grass so you really want to pull it back in to where you have a good two inches of gap on the edges and then i'll come through and blow as well one thing you can do is put down pre-emergent which is a herbicide that basically stops new seeds from germinating for a few months usually a few months best thing really is to just make sure mulch one to two times a year and do it thick enough that you don't really have to do herbicides but that is an option especially if you have a lot of annual weeds so yeah we'll go around all the edges blow them back up in and set [Applause] folks i'm calling this the complete guide to molten because i'm trying to tell you i'll share with you all all the information that i learned over my years of landscaping and as a landscape division manager and so you don't have to go through all that time of trial and error you can learn it with me and josh today in a matter of minutes okay so here we go we've cleaned them all out i would say that there are different types of mulch this is uh there's hardwood there's there's soft wood there's eco usually which is like pallets and stuff like that that are all uh mulched up there's bark and then there's also like pine bark uh mulch there's different dyes there's brown there's black this is dyed black and then there's natural just determine the color you want and the harder the wood the longer it's gonna take to decompose so you may even last like a good year and a half two years if you get a hardwood mulch when you're mulching you always start at the furthest end of the property while you have all the energy so go ahead come down here josh we'll go to this corner right here we've already cleared out the edges and now we have enough lip to come down in we found some more weeds let's go ahead and pull those out there's a little piece of grass from when they aerated and overseeded and then um the way to do it is you want to start towards the back with black mulch or any dyed mold watch out for it's staining don't dump it right on the house or on the plants because you might stain the house you really want to dump right in where the tire is josh what i like to do is do two dumps per wheelbarrow that way you don't have as much hand spreading so dump there half yup and then come down you're gonna need about one more by that rock do a good two or three dumps and then you'll know kind of calibrate yourself to know how much you've done i like to go if it's just a refresh one to one and a half inches so right about like that is what we're shooting for all right like that so we'll see how many dumps it takes we're probably going to need one two three four five so a 10 or 12 through here if you're doing your mulch like this like we are by offloading you know bulk quantities then it's good to have two people and three wheelbarrows we only have two here so we're not exactly showing you the best way to do it but but it's best to have two people three little barrels so that one person is loading the whole time and then the second person is running them back and forth and knock it out way better that way another thing is if you're doing bagged mulch bag mulch is great but also it costs more if you're doing bag mulch then go ahead and just lay them out in the landscape and then you can tear them out easily and you're tearing them into the bed so where any spillage is okay this little area needs it too already got the weed eater cleaned up the edge first thing i like to do is do the rough spread with either a hard rake or a pitchfork that is like a longer pitchfork and then do the rough spread like that just get it mostly spread out and watch out for getting too close to the plants that's one of the key things you never ever ever want your mulch to be touching the base of your plant so pull it out to where it's not really touching the base otherwise that collar where the roots start and the stem starts right there is where a plant will breathe a whole lot so you gotta really have that area free of mulch otherwise you'll be suffocating your plants [Music] next to last is to use a soft break like this one and i like to actually come through and flip the rake over and you pull it like that across the whole space and it really gives it that last final really good look ruffles it up any any steps where you can see where you step are all cleaned up and you can come through and if any little spot you need to move mulch flip it over you know little barbs going that way and you can really pull it flip it over again and make sure you have that final touch the last thing you want to do also is look for if it's too close to a plant see right here right here it's a little bit close to the plant pull it out from the plant so the plants okay and there you go see how there's little gaps right there see those little gaps right there i'll come along here use this guy the corner of it it bridges those gaps and now it's all straight across the details matter for a nice finished look [Music] [Music] overhead rocks and stuff like that [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] okay it's looking good guys uh but i have a confession to make something else around here is not looking so good um this is garden guy i'm garden guy benjaminx and this is a channel where i try to keep everything authentic and real unless just for real i don't i'm looking pretty pathetic right now you want to give him a little bit of a little panorama you don't have to go that slow okay i mean it's like okay he's going to some kind of nice meeting wait a minute shorts wow he's pretty pretty uh whitey sweaty whitey and then pretty cool shorts you know i'm thinking but it's like i don't know and then this aeropostale what they don't even sponsor me and i've got their shirt on like what is happening here so garden guy look so a vibe cool vibeage so let me know boom and that'll be good what do you think about that josh ah sounds good i like it i think i might need some style too but my goal for this channel is to help you transform your spaces into edible and beautiful abundance we didn't grow any gardens today there are some raised beds in the back i'll show you in a second today was a mulch day and we showed you some tips and tricks on how to do that last thing is to blow everything off make everything look and span and break it off with the rake though especially that soft rake flipping it over that's always a good trick but yeah i'll give you a little a little uh last look around and see how it goes and as a uh secondary goal he wants to help you find your style too oh i can't do that josh i'm kidding no ginger po box no no i got it i'm not going to help hundreds of thousands of people out there but y'all thanks for being so awesome and please help me with the style thing because you know i want to also want to be comfy so i'm not going to wear pants in the summertime all the time run landscape here everything all leveled off nothing's close to the plants come along level across there oh yeah these are those garden beds i was telling you about we went ahead and did the most pretty thick through here because it was really getting thin that'll keep the weeds from popping back up got the entrance way got this raised bed right here this is actually a raised bed that i installed a few years ago [Music] you
