honestly I can't blame you Italy is an amazing country and is home to a lot of very happy American expats and it's getting more and more popular with Gorgeous Landscapes incredible food and dreamlike weather it's no wonder that Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world so if you're dreaming of days filled with Pizza Pasta and endless lemon cello you're probably asking yourself can Americans move to Italy and if so how the answer is 100% yes Americans can move to Italy on a temporary basis quite easily as Italy is one of the countries that are in the shenen region and Americans can stay for up to 3 months if if you're wanting to move to Italy on a more permanent basis this is where it gets a little bit more complex there are a couple of different visas that will allow you to live in Italy longer than 3 months and let's get into it the typical Visa options are student visas work visas investor visas startup visas digital Nomad visas retirement visas and each one of these visas has its own specific requirements and lengths that you're going to need to be mindful of while you're there two popular visas that Americans use to move to Italy are the elective residency visa and a work visa that then becomes a residence permit let's talk about elective residency if you already have some passive income set up then the elective residency Visa might be for you with the elective residency Visa you are not allowed to actively work so you will need to have certain passive income requirements in order to qualify options include passive income of € 31,000 per year plus 20% for a spouse and 5% for a child you will also need proof of accommodation for the year and health insurance this Visa is known as the retirement Visa since many leverage their pension and retirement income to qualify let's talk about work visas you will only be accepted if the yearly quota hasn't been filled and if you have a sponsoring employer in Italy as as of March 2024 the yearly quota for non-eu and Nona Nationals who are non-seasonal professionals is just over 61,000 the cost of living varies greatly between North and South Italy so it's hard to give an average let's Baseline with Milan as an example as it's one of the most expensive cities in Italy a furnished 900 ft² home in a prime area in Milan starts around 1,7 $25 with a utility bill of $175 per month home internet subscription is about $25 and you can hire cleaning help for around $13 per hour when you're out and about expect to pay around $15 for eating out in downtown and a cocktail at a downtown Club is usually going to run you about $1 americ beer is definitely cheaper at $5 and you can get cappuccinos for as little as $2 per cup a bottle of wine can be cheaper than water if you can believe Americans in sento offers a unique blend of work and Leisure the city's stunning landscape friendly locals and laid-back attitude makes it a popular choice for those looking to live and work abroad the city is also widely known for its small Ceramics lace work and artisanal shops so how much does it cost to move to Italy as an American the cost of moving to Italy will greatly depend on what you plan to bring and where you plan to live in general it's not worth the hassle and the money to bring your furniture and possessions all the way to Italy from the US it's better to sell whatever you have in the US or put it in a storage unit and then buy all new things once you get to Italy a few things to factor into your budget are the cost of flights to Italy with extra suitcases flights and vaccines for pets paying for Visa fees and Visa taxes and of course of course your apartment deposit first month's rent and possibly an agency fee if you're a solo person and willing to live in more budget accommodation I would recommend having a budget Target of $5,000 however if you're a family moving and require more space in a large city I would recommend a Target budget of $10,000 there are
