How to Mix and Master in Logic Pro | Stock Plugins ONLY!

all right guys so you guys have been asking me how to mix and master a song in logic pro let's get right into it [Music] so we're going to start with the kick okay let's add the rim in high hats let's get the symbol see the Chimes okay that's a good starting point because it's really low and that's where we want to start so we have head room to add everything else so the next thing I'm going to do is come over here to the stereo out and I am going to use all stock plugins as agree so we're going to come to Dynamics then we're going to come over here to limiter and I'm going to start out by turning this gain up starting out at about 6 DB and we're gonna mix into this limiter [Music] now let's add the 808s in [Music] foreign [Music] sitting at a sweet spot let's start to embellish the drums and the 808 I like to mix those together as one unit so let's get into it so let's start with this Kick Drum I'm gonna add some Channel EQ [Music] and get this beater up nice I'm turning up about 1K now what we're gonna do with this kick is roll off some of the frequencies that we don't need [Music] all right [Music] we're gonna put some EQ on the rim shot now these drums don't need a whole lot I'm gonna do some drum bus processing so we're just gonna roll off again follow that same process that we did earlier with the kick [Music] foreign [Music] up some 1K [Music] so it cuts nice let's follow the same process with the hi-hats so you can see this is already rolled off it's not a lot happening down here but just to be safe let's just do it [Music] now that we've eqed majority of the drums let me explain this to you really quickly the reason why we're rolling off this low end that we don't need is because the low end carries frequencies that we might not be able to hear audibly in our studio but if you play these in a big Club setting where they have like big Subs you'll hear those frequencies down there that will hinder your mix and also if you want your mix loud because I know we want our mixes blazing loud we need to make sure that we roll off some of the low end and some of the top end that is unnecessary that you don't need to make sure that you have a transparent mix so next we're going to do the Chimes see we've got some stuff down here so we got to roll that off and look we got some activity down here so let's roll this off so we're going to pull up the EQ on the 808 and the EQ on the kick drum and I want to see where there's any friction are they hitting in the same frequency range if so we want to reduce one of the other so they're both getting a lot of love around the same space around this 40 Hertz or so so what I'm going to do is I'm going to sacrifice some of the 808 so I'm Gonna Roll Off just a hair of this 40 right over here and just turn it down just a little bit let's narrow this out just a little bit and we're going to come over here to that 40 where that kick is and just turn this down ever so slightly [Music] all right so now I'm going to boost some of this low end I'm going to narrow this out a little bit and try to get below the 40 Hertz [Music] so [Music] see that there so now this boost is happening around this 20 to 30 Hertz we cut out just a little bit of that 40 and now we've boosted where the kick is not so you're gonna feel a nice Rumble this 808 down here where the kick is not and that's going to really be transparent and help us in the long run I'm going to color these 808s now that we got the EQ out of the way so we're gonna grab some of the Distortion and then I'm just gonna grab a little bit of bit Crusher and get some more harmonics out of this 808. [Music] so we'll do about 10 bit they're going to turn this drive up all right so we know we're working with [Music] now we can blend this in the mix yeah now let's go ahead and create a bus or a track stack for the drums in the 808 and then we're gonna mix them all together combined so we're gonna do right now is right click on this and we can do create track stack and then we'll do this as a summing stack now we have all of the drums and the 808 in one track stack [Music] so what I'm going to do now is I'm going to reach for a different EQ to add some nice Sizzle on the drums so we're going to come over here to Vintage EQ collection and then we're going to come over here to Vintage tube EQ and we're just gonna beef up the drum bus all together we're gonna add some Sizzle and a little bit of low end [Music] all right nice [Music] see there nice little bump now we can turn a drive up if you want to to get more saturation so let's check that out nice [Music] turn it off back on I'm gonna put some a little bit of compression on the drum so we're going to come over here to Dynamics and then we're going to come over here to compressor and what I'm going to do right now is do some nice mild compression [Music] here's with it off here's what it on off [Music] on all right it's subtle but it's warming up the drums all together taking away that bland sound and now character and life is coming out of the Rhythm Section so what I do from this point on is just add in other instruments gradually and just start to do the same process with the EQ [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign that's a good rough spot with just EQ now I'm going to bring the vocals into the picture and this is really important because this is going to allow me to know where to apply EQ bumps within the keys and anything in the 808s etc etc so let's bring the rough vocals in [Music] place [Music] [Music] all right so now we're going to start to work on the vocals I don't want to mix the vocals last I want to mix the music around her vocals and make it work that way I'm going to start with some of course you name the EQ but I'm going to EQ the track stack the lead vocals track stack I'm a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters and my ears are going to tell me what to do next someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me what I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver he gonna take Faith all right so I'm just doing some cleaning right now and finding all the spots that I don't like and I'm trying to make this work with the track as well [Music] okay now that we got the cleaning done I am going to compress this vocal so we're going to reach for a compressor and we're gonna start with again mild compression I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver he gonna take Faith to get in these Waters someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all took a deep breath knew I had to go back back to that cheek Ursa love read the lost souls and we gon scrap Mama tell me leave no one behind open doors blend this in so let's uh turn the output gain down a little bit I'm a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver he gonna take Faith to get in these Waters so we're gonna come back over to EQ so let's come over here and let's go into the vintage collection and we're gonna add some of this tube EQ I really like this a lot on vocals and drums I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all so that's a good spot so now I'm going to add a de-esser at the top of her chain now and after that de-essing we'll be able to get more brightness more clarity come over here to Dynamics and then we're gonna put a de-esser 2 on here I know I ain't a spider I'm a deep diver someone how to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all that's decent right there it doesn't need a whole lot now that we have that after the tube EQ I'm gonna go into another compressor different compressor this time classic VCA for some more compression I'm a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all now that we have that now we can bring the output down Surf Rider I'm a deep diver now with that I'm gonna add some Reverb And Delay click over here to the bus and we're gonna go over here to bus four and it's going to open this up right here for us Oxford we're just gonna name this verb and what we're going to use is some space designer so we're going to come down here to reverb and then we're gonna do um space designer and we're going to put the wetness all the way up uh the dry all the way down because this is on a bus and we're going to turn up this vocal into the Reverb and make tweaks on the Reverb I'm a deep diver he gonna take Faith to get in these Waters someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all and then we're gonna come over here to the output EQ and make some tweaks to the Reverb as well I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters someone had to bring me to the surface let me catch my breath tell me you're worth it all so what you want to do right now is find a Reverb that matches the vibe of the track or gives it the correct space now let's add a delay I'm going to use um the stereo delay this is one of my go-to's and we're going to set this up to have a nice ping pong so this is going to be a quarter note this is going to be an eighth note now typically the eighth note tends to run out faster than the quarter note so we're going to extend the feedback on the eighth note let's listen to how that sounds to get in these Waters that's nice so what we're gonna do is we're actually going to EQ this delay to tailor the EQ it comes with a high cut and low cut filter but I want to have more control I [Music] know took a deep breath and I had to go back back to that cheek Ursula for the lost souls and we gonna scrap this gets the delay out of the way of the hi-hats and the clarity of her main lead vocal so this is a really good hack for getting uh clear effects on your your vocal now let's get a rough mix on the bgvs and then we're gonna start to blend the music in to fill the Gap because right now we have the vocal the drums and then everything else is kind of stuck in this big gap so we're gonna fix that let's go into the bgvs we're going to apply the same processing on uh the bgv so we're just going to take this click on it hit option and drag it over to the right and we're just going to drag all these over [Music] home [Music] less [Music] let's listen to that with the track [Music] now I know where to fill in these gaps with EQ on the piano on the roads on the bass etc etc and enhancements on the drums Bus Let's dig in let's go ahead and put some compression on this [Music] thank you [Music] let's put it in with the track [Music] now we're gonna add some EQ to this now that we got it tamed we're going to embellish this now so we're going to come over here to EQ and we're going to go to Vintage EQ then we're going to come over here to Vintage console EQ we're going to add some mids to this [Music] I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters I ain't a Surf Rider I'm a deep diver you're gonna take Faith to get in these Waters I'm gonna come over here to the master stereo out I'm gonna start off with bumping up this high end because logic natively sounds a little dark so I'm gonna bump up this high end just a little bit took a deep breath and I had to go back back to that cheek Ursula free the lost souls a week on scrap perfect so I'm literally just taking you through my real life process so I'm gonna do right now is I'm going to take all of the keys so the all the pianos and the roads we're gonna bust all these now or do a track stack now we have all these and now we're going to put some processing on the vintage collection then we're gonna go to graphic EQ I'm and just a little bit of 250. and then now that we got that we're going to compress the whole Keys busy there we go now we can turn the keys bus down so we're gonna come back up here to our drums and here's where we're gonna add some glue we already got some compression but we're going to take this a step further so we're gonna do right here is put a little bit of this bit Crusher on the whole drum kit all right [Music] now we can blend this in with the track back back see they're very transparent difference now I'm gonna put some compression on the hi-hats because now that we have this big Crusher on there it's kind of enhancing a lot of the hi-hats and you can see with that compression on the hi-hat it allows the vocal to be in the front instead of the hi-hat being in the front so what we're going to do right now is put a little bit more Master bus processing on everything for our nice master so the first thing I want to do is start metering this our loudness meter so I'm going to get this right here loudness meter this is going to let us know our loves our loudness unit full scale I try to hit around negative nine negative a somewhere around there we got our Channel EQ now we're going to add a compressor on the master bus [Music] to a place [Music] let's come over here to a multi-band compressor we're going to put this just before our limiter so let's come over here Dynamics and then we're going to come over here to multi-presser this is going to allow us to compress and control multiple bands [Music] so this is our low band [Music] here's our low mid [Music] all right then here's our uh mid higher mid [Music] and then we have our highs which is right over here [Music] [Music] I want you back home [Music] so let's go ahead and let's add the last limiter so we're going to do the Adaptive limiter so we're going to go to Dynamics adaptive limiter [Music] all right now here's the finished product check it out always [Music] [Music] so as you can see it doesn't take a whole lot to get a good sound in logic now you want to make
