hi everyone it's Kimberley Cahill at Jeffers equine and we're back for another fun video today we're at little star stables and have the help of Stephanie and big whiskey aka max before we get started with measuring we want to show you why it's important to have a correctly fitted blanket or sheet a blanket that is too large is worse than a blanket is slightly too small a blanket that is too large can potentially shift enough during turnout that your horse can get tangled up in the straps this can rip your blanket or worse injure your horse if you try to pull the blanket back the weight of the excess material will apply a lot of pressure to your horses chest and neck as well as the wither area another issue as you can see here is the gaping at the neck a blanket that is too small will restrict your horse and apply pressure points to your horses neck chest shoulder and wither it will also leave your horses hindquarters exposed it is important to make sure that your horse is stating square so that your measurement will be correct grab your cloth measuring tape and a buddy to help you measure your horse you will want to begin your measurement at the base of your horses neck in the center of the chest from there you want to bring the measuring tape around the widest point of the shoulder belly and hindquarters stopping at the hair of the tail most blankets run in increments of 3 inches if you find yourself in between sizes you will want to choose the size that is closest to your horse's measurement Max's measurement is 82 inches which would mean that Stephanie would want to go with a size 81 if Max's measurement would have been 83 inches she would have gone up to a eighty-four now that the blanket is on your force you want to adjust all the straps on the blanket after you pull the blanket out of the bag make sure to unbuckle the chest and belly straps before you go to put it on your course start with the chest straps adjust the buckles so that the neck of the blanket is not sagging next move on to the belly straps and adjust them so that you can fit no more than a fist in between your horse's belly and the belly straps last adjust the hind leg straps so that they do not hang but are not so tight that they would constantly rub the inside of your horse's hind legs a simple trick to help keep your blanket from shifting is to loop one hind leg strap through the other now that you have the correct size blanket your horse will remain comfortable through the colder months I hope you found this video helpful don't forget to Like and subscribe if you liked the video you can find more information about our products by going to Geoffrey's equine comm or by calling 1-800 jeffers we hope to see you in our next video you
