all right guys in today's video i'm going to show you how to measure a roof we got a pretty simple gable roof uh right behind us right over here pretty small roof um thought it would be a good example to put this video together so i'm gonna show you how to how to measure it and how to calculate the square footage not sure why you would go anywhere else these guys are also honest [Music] right we're up here on the roof as you can see we got a chimney we got a big ass antenna ride down right down there a pretty pretty simple layout so we're going to go ahead and sketch it out all right guys here's what you want to do you want to go ahead and measure the chimney if you have one which this one's going to be 40 inches by 40 inches we already have our sketch here and as you can see here's our 40 by 40 40 by 40 inches for the chimney and i've already measured everything so you see this right here uh 22 feet that's this right here from the eve all the way up to the ridge okay as you can see right that was at this down here another 22 feet here's the chimney so it's going to be from the ridge all the way down to the eve okay and then from the top the peak this this would be the ridge 34 feet so from here to here which would be from here all the way down there okay and then this piece 22 feet is from this ridge down all the way to the eave 22 your ridge and your eave here is pretty much the same measurement which is this ridge and this eve right down there pretty much you just measure it out get the measurements this right here is 10 by 18. this measures 10 18 10 which is pretty much this right here down and to the side pretty a simple layout guys now we're going to go ahead and calculate it check it out all right here we go guys so i can't do math in my head so we're just going to use this calculator which i could keep in my clipboard anyway so we're going to go 34 by 22 34 by 22 that gives us a 748 we just rounded up to 750. okay okay next piece down here is going to be exactly the same measurements guys 34 by 22. so that gives you another 750 square feet for this area and this area right here then right here you got 18 by 10 it should be um camera sorry about that let's uh set this back up right here where were we we're at 18 times 10 pretty sure that's 180. so we're gonna go ahead and hit that with the 180 same measurement over here guys 10 by 18 that gives you 180 so here we have four areas one two three four i'm just gonna add all these up so it'd be 180 plus 180 plus 750 plus 750 that gives us 1860. that wind keeps knocking down my little tripod right there here we go all right so that comes out to 1860 guys and i always run it twice you know just just to double check same same same number 1860 so that's your total square feet right there so that's how you do it now how you convert that into roofing squares you just 100 square feet equals one roofing square that's that's your calculation there guys so pretty much um i always it's going to be a 18.60 right but 18.60 guys you divide that by 100 square feet there it is 18.6 so in squares roofing squares it would be 18 18.6 that's just the area guys all right check this out so that was 1860 divided by 100 that gives you 18.6 roofing squares 100 square feet equals one roofing square wrap your head around that one why it's like that i don't know that's just the way it is so that's just the area of the square feet of the entire roof which is going to be different than the square footage of the house and almost 100 of the cases your your roof square feet is different from your house square feet because your your roof is at an angle right you got two pitches or four or six or whatever it is and the the foundation of the house is usually a flat surface as an area so it's always going to be the roof square footage is always going to be larger than the actual roof square footage foundation square footage is going to be larger than the roof square footage after you get your roof square footage you still need all your hips your waist your ridges your starter strips you know everything else that goes along with it there's a rule of thumb and roofing you can use anywhere from 10 to 15 percent waste so you'll take in this case we'll take the 18.6 squares or 1860 square feet and you want to multiply it by 15 and that'll that usually will get you all your accessories your waist your ridges your hips your valleys all that stuff i hope you learned something today like always if you got something to say drop it in the comments we'll catch you guys on the next episode
