swing is such an important feature here when we're making music trying to humanize the machines because they're so mathematical so there are two ways there are two things that we can do here to swing the beats one of them is to you know move the pieces around the grid the other thing is to work with velocity and velocity to me like that was one of the first lessons that I had when I started making beats was to create swing through velocity I'm bringing in this song because this song really you know it really shows you how to swings can change an actual B this is one one of the swings on the same samples [Music] and this is the this is the on screen so you can see how it really changes the beat just by changing the swing and that's just the swing of the beat has been changed [Music] so that way you see you can see how it affects so much so you see that the snares hitting a bit late there and I really like the way that sounds I like you know where it wouldn't the beef starts getting a bit messy and it doesn't sound right I like that I like to have that type of swinging my beats it really sounds good to me and that's where I search for most of the times so from what I learned there are like three ways of actually creating a bead creating swing to the beat and I can swing to the beat one of the ways is you go straight and you add a value there to the swing you say you won you want the drums to swing to 65 whatever number you want to put in there you add that number you add that value say if you want to shift the notes earlier on the grid or later in the grid really up to you so you put those numbers in and then you record and everything is gonna shift to the value that you gave and obviously you have to have your time correction set to to a value as well now the other way of doing it is to actually don't have any time correction on the move the quantization set off which means once you strike once you strike a pad it records it directly to the grid it doesn't correct it there's no time correction there for the for your sounds it will it's like playing free and it will record as you played onto the grid now this this is used by many people and many people love to do it this way and the other way the way that I do it is to program it and basically to me it doesn't really matter if I recorded freely or if I recorded with with some swing already on because what I'm gonna do afterwards is I'm gonna go to the grid where everything was I'm gonna shift the notes I'm gonna nudge everything so most of the times I just start the beat by using 1/16 no swing value anything and after the drums are recorded I go ahead and I shift the notes in the on the grid and I'm gonna show you how I do that so I'm gonna I'm just going to make a beat I'm going to spend a bit of time here doing this so what let's go ahead and do it okay so I have some snares already written down I'm going to record some high hats I have to record these ones first with some eighth eighth notes okay let's go so as I said as I said I'm a programmer more than a live player so so what do I do swing all this let's go here to the great first thing I want to do is side the snares and shift and shift them a bit and I like to have those high hats to come with so let's just turn this off so I can not touch notes freely I like to have my high hats in the snares hit at the same time sounds nice tight [Music] so you see that kind of shift in time that's what I'm looking for I'm looking for something that it's it's grabbing the listener I actually like to post those type of of vibes you know it's that's really up to you you kind of decide we want to do [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] or slightly the same and this is me children the beat I usually take a bit of time doing this so much that's actually true [Music] [Music] these kicks that are just right before the that hit there that one I actually want to give it a different attack so like trying to think of a drummer when a drummer plays when he does a double kick [Music] the first hit has a different attack from the second one the second one is louder as well but the first one it's it's lower in level but it has a slower attack as well what I'm gonna do here and I do this with high hats also do it with the kick drums as I copy the kick drum right there okay now I'm gonna go to the to that cake that I want to use this one right here and I'm going to transpose it to this one to this pad a5 I'm gonna go to the program edit and what I can do here on the filter section I'm going to give it a different attack okay okay that's it now I noticed that I have a another another kick somewhere here and by giving it a different attack you're gonna create that swing as well [Music] and I'm kind of happy with this so this is kind of how I work my swing it taped it takes me a awful long time to do that I know but I actually enjoy doing this this way a much more of a programmer where I go in and put all the beats and pieces together there and move them around to kind of create a certain vibe that I like [Music] [Music] you
