you guys it's your girl drea back with another video if you're new here be sure to hit the subscribe button turn on those posts a notification and join the life of drea we are on the road to 1000 subscribers you guys I know we can do it so be sure to LIKE comment share and subscribe because you know sharing is caring today's video is all about how to score script some of you might call it marking some of you might call it scoring but I'm here to show some basic tips on how to do so these tips that I'm gonna be sharing with you guys today are what I've used when I studied at Toronto Film School and I still use this while I'm auditioning today learn these tips by studying the stanislavski's basics I know that's kind of a tongue twister but I'll be sure to put it down in the description these tips will actually work for any sort of script whether it be a monologue a scene a play film television either way these tips are gonna save your life so let's get into a little tip that I would suggest is to make a legend I like to make a legend somewhere on my script whether it be on the side or somewhere in the top corner just so I can differentiate my markings of a beat unit and my actions here is some supplies that you're gonna need post-it flag pencil highlighters and an eraser so to begin by marking your script you're gonna want to highlight your character's name and the lines that you have this will help you to know what line - your character has and also to not get lost when you're memorizing your script second step you're gonna want to do is you're gonna want to read your script cold and what that means is you're gonna want to read the script without having any intentions of guessing where the storyline goes or what your characters purpose is the third thing that you're gonna want to do is read the script again and this time when you read your script you're gonna want to find objectives and theme the fourth thing that you're gonna want to do is read your script again and the reason being is because this time you're gonna want to find your units your beats and your verbs now some of you might be asking what is a unit what is a beat and what our verbs well what is a beat a beat is where the actor changes or pauses each time that there is a change in purpose status or emotion there is a change in beat example if there is a phone call a doorbell ringing or another character within the scene that is entering that is a beat because there is a change what is a unit a unit basically is a chunk that breaks up a scene to define it unit is normally assigned a headline or a title just to remind the actor the main message of the unit it could be the setting its placed in its storyline or the main message what is a verb in acting and this is basically a transitive verb that is in its present tense each thought should have an action and B should be constantly changing objectives are the want of a character obstacles within a scene stop the character from getting what they want obstacles can be physical emotional intellectual or spiritual essentially the wants are the golden key of understanding your character to show you guys some examples of what script scoring can look like I'm gonna use some examples of what I used in the past at film school simply because of copyright and just some private projects that I'm not allowed to share with you guys just yet or you can see where I have highlighted my characters lines over here this is an example of a unit change and the title that I've given to that unit and along the side here in these brackets is where I labeled my actions and my verbs alright you guys so I hope you enjoyed today's video and I hope that was beneficial for you aspiring actors out there looking to get some extra practice while we're in quarantine if you liked this video be sure to give it a thumbs up and comment down below any other different tips that you might have while you're scoring your script if you're new here to this channel be sure to hit the subscribe button turn on those poster notifications we are on the road to 1,000 subscribers you guys so be sure to LIKE comment share and subscribe because you know sharing is caring what
