hey folks this is gerald with diy prepper and today i'm going to show you how you can make a kit to help your water storage last longer in an emergency but before we get started if this is your first time to the channel or even if you've been by here before if you wouldn't mind hitting the subscribe button the notification bell and also if there's any point in the video we're like hey it's not a total loss if you wouldn't mind hitting the like button as well let's get started so the first thing that i added to this kit is a bag of plastic utensils and that might seem a little bit weird but when my family and i went through that 2021 texas ice storm we found ourselves having to use more water than what we wanted to cleaning things like you know forks and spoons plates dishes things like that so my thought behind this is we use less of our stored water have to boil water less if it's a below water notice if we use these plastic utensils and in this bag i got forks i got knives i got spoons and that's probably going to be enough in here to last me and my small family me my wife my toddler for probably at least a week the next thing that i added to the kit were paper plates and paper bowls and my reasoning for that is pretty much the same as why i added plastic utensils i don't want to have to waste my water doing dishes so these paper plates and bowls are very easy to get rid of unlike styrofoam and plastic you can burn these safely as long as you have a place to do it where you're not going to torch the entire house the next thing that i added to my kit were disinfecting wipes and the reason why is these are already damp you're not going to have to use your water supply to dampen a rag to wipe things down they also kill bacteria and viruses so you can help keep your kitchen keep your living areas clean if there's a mess but i would recommend keeping these in probably a large ziploc bag so that they do not dry out as fast so that you don't get them and be like oh crud they're already dried out and also check on them from time to time to make sure that hasn't already happened and replace them as needed another thing that i added to the kit were flushable wipes now the sanitation wipes those are more for cleaning things like countertops and floors if you need them but these you can use them to give yourself kind of a good a good wipe down kind of if you can't take a bath something like that this is far better than nothing also i mean i would probably go with a package a little bit bigger than this if you have room in your bucket i mean you can always make multiple buckets if necessary have one bucket for these one bucket for sanitation wipes whatever the case is depending on the size of your family and how long you would like the kits to last for but these are good just for personal cleaning the next thing that i added to the kit was hand sanitizer and the thing about hand sanitizer is it allows you to clean your hands without having to use your water if you're using like let's say you have a reliance aquatainer draped over the sink and you're washing your hands then you are using a just absolute ton of water to do that so hand sanitizer you know i mean everybody knows how that works you just squirt it on your hand rub it in and then you should be good to go the next thing that i added to the kit was a sawyer tap filter and that whole situation with the texas ice storm that's what made me want to get a halt of one of these we went without water totally for about half a day which isn't nearly as bad as what a lot of people went through but we were under a boil water notice for probably good grief i think four or five days after that so what we did was as we used our water storage as our drinking water because we knew that was pretty much clean and then for dishes since we don't want to waste that good water we just boiled it up and did dishes that way now when we were doing that we would have to boil water on them on the stovetop and then dump it into a huge roasting pan and we had to go through several pots of boiling water before we had enough to do dishes and that was a big pain in the butt especially when it came to like rinsing and stuff so what i came up with for rinsing was i saw this and i was like hey this would be perfect we could kind of clean the dishes and then rinse them off straight from the tap because this will remove bacteria and protozoa which is mostly what you have to worry about in an area such as the united states that has good water you know water treatment facilities and it comes with this and a bunch of adapters and i did a full review on this filter that you can find by clicking here and i'll also put a link in the description down below so you guys can go check it out another thing that i included in my kit was trash bags if you were going to be using a lot of like paper goods and disposables then you're going to need trash bags to hold those until you can get rid of them also trash bags can serve as a way to gather more water you spread them out put them out in the rain position them so where the water runs into a bucket or a pitcher or something like that you can collect water and then it's good for the poops okay you can put this over the bucket put a toilet lid on top of it or if you have a camp toilet that's even better and the bad stuff goes into this and you can just dump some kitty litter on it tie it up and then put it somewhere safe until you can get rid of it i included paper towels in the kit as well that way you're not having to use rags that you'll have to wash later on i mean paper towels just have a ton of uses they're also flammable so if you needed to start a fire they will work good for that also another thing that i would recommend keeping in a water preservation kit is some sort of squirt bottle and this obviously isn't a squirt bottle but you can kind of convert it into one which i'll talk about in just a second but the point of having a squirt bottle is so that you can spray water onto a specific location to clean things things like toothbrushes if you want to rinse dishes off you don't have one of those saw your tap filters things like that it allows you to put the water exactly where you want to and it saves a lot more water than just dumping water on top of something so i mentioned this in a previous video but what you can do is you can just take a needle or something like that and then poke a hole in the top of that water bottle and then you can use it to spray things off also the bucket itself serves a few different water preservation uses the first is it's a water container if there's a situation where you think maybe you're about to lose your water supply go ahead and put this under the spigot in the tub fill it up you got five more gallons of water that you can use for various things especially things like flushing the toilet cleaning stuff things like that also you can use this as a makeshift toilet i don't have a toilet seat lid for the bucket because i have a separate camping toilet but they make lids that you can sit on top of the toilet you put a trash bag in before that and you can use it in there so that you're not having to flush so much and use more water and lastly if you have some sort of like water filter like i saw your mini or saw your tap something like that you can drill a hole towards the bottom of the bucket in the side put a spigot in that you can thread that filter or an adapter onto that way you have a gravity fed water filter as well now another way that you can help your water last a little bit longer during an emergency is using freeze-dried meals now you have to use water to reconstitute them because they're freeze-dried but where you save your water is there's no cleanup afterwards if you do it the right way so how you prepare meals like this you boil water and then you pour it into the pouch directly and they also have number 10 cans that you can pour water into directly as well you stir it up seal it it reconstitutes and then you can eat straight out of the pouch and since all you had to do was do is boil water your pot isn't dirty at all which is nice now when getting these there's there's a couple different options you can buy and buy the pouch you can usually just pick those up at like sporting goods stores that's usually not the cheapest route to go but if you don't have a whole lot of money at once uh it's better to have a small trickle of food coming in than not having anything come in like except for maybe like once a year and then you're exposed throughout the entire year so maybe pick one of those up you know every time you go to the grocery store every other week every month something like that better than nothing and then they also have these buckets um and i'll put links in the description down below for this kind of stuff that these buckets have different different assortments there's different buckets like this is the essential there's a classic bucket which has different meals in it i also have a breakfast bucket stuff like that and then i mentioned the number 10 cans pricing on these it really does fluctuate it fluctuates based on are you getting in a bucket pouch or can and then also the variety causes price fluctuations as well so for example it might be cheaper to buy four or five pouches of this than it is to buy a number 10 can and then later in the week it might be the reverse it might be cheaper to buy one number 10 can instead of five of those so before you buy them you just got to kind of make sure that you're getting the best price from where you're getting it from and kind of shop around on them well once again thank you guys for stopping by i hope you all got something out of this that you can use if you enjoyed the video and you haven't done so already if you wouldn't mind hitting the subscribe button the notification bell and also the like button that would be great hope to see y'all back y'all have a good
