Today we're going to fix some of the real
problem areas on my lawn. I've a lot of areas that suffered at some
stage over the winter, don't get any sun, and as a result the grass just dies away. I'm going to show you how to make small repairs
quick and easy. Let's go ...........
Every year on my lawn, this bit of ground doesn't get any sun at all through the winter. So this is where we walk on and off the lawn,
and you can see it's quite patchy, this area here. You can see that we've totally lost the grass. This is where I get all the weed grasses coming
into the lawn causes a lot of problems, but you can see this here, there. Later on in the
spring, towards the summer, I'm going to be doing a full refurb so today I'm just looking
to fix the smaller problem areas. Happy Days the lawn's all cut, let's get on
with the repairs. If you were just to take your seed, bring it on the lawn, and throw it
down on the lawn, that's probably not going to grow. So we're going to have to prepare
the ground for the seed, so that's what I'm going to show you now. To prepare the ground
for the seed, I'm going to show you some simple tools. Now if you watched last week's Video
on how to scarify lawn then you'll recognize these tools. In last week's Video we used this
Bulldog rake. Just very good for ripping out grass, and also this manual scarifier, so they're
the tools that I'm going to use. First up I'm going to use the Bulldog rake. And what we're looking to do is to break up
the soil, and give the seed something to stick to. So that's our first tool, Bulldog
rake, most people have one,, really good at this and if you if you're just new into lawn care
really good, just for small jobs. Now we're going to have a go with the manual scarifier. As you can see there, all we're
looking to do is really break up the lawn and create some lines into the soil and then
whenever we come to seed, the seed falls into those and it gives it somewhere safe to grow.
As an added bonus the lawn rake has pulled out a lot of the weed grasses, the po ana that
was grown over here. Another job you can do to really help the seed grow and that is to aerate those areas. A wee area is the walk on and off area. The rest of the lawn was aerated
a couple of weeks ago for another Video. For your own project, you'd probably want to aerate all the areas that you're going to repair because that's going to help get the seed
off to a good start. We've broken up the soil. The next step is
to seed this area. Now you could just throw seed down on top of that, but you're much
better covering, it so I'm going to show you different ways that you can cover the seed
for maximum, to get maximum growth. Our next task now is to mix some seed and compost or
soil up in a bucket. The easiest way to do that is just to take a handful of grass seed
and throw it in and then take a compost, throw a bit in, another handful of grass seed, and then just mix it all together. I think I'll put another handful of grass
seed in it for luck. That's pretty much what we want there. We're
just going to take our grass seed now we've got all this ground broken up, and we're going
to throw it down. I'm going to put down a good liberal amount. You could use your foot to break this
up and spread it out, this is quite a big area I'm going to show you a tool to level it all
out lovely. I always say that we build the Videos around the Comments, you guys ask
me, so this next tip is actually from you guys or readers now - if you have any questions drop
me a Comment down below. People were suggesting to put the compost on the seed in that together
and it'll be good for large areas so that's what we're going to test now. So this thing
here is called a compost roller, pretty basic thing it's just a drum with holes, mesh holes
in it, fill it with compost. With the compost roller
that was little to no work, the seed has been spread lovely over the top nice and even along
with the compost. Whenever I come down to this section it's all lumpy from just where we just
threw it out with our hands. Another bonus to using the compost spreader
is, it catches any wee stones so you're not getting all that debris onto the lawn. Now that we have it all spread out, I'm
going to show you a couple of different ways we can work it into the soil. The first tool
we're going to use is the Bulldog rake that we used to break up the lawn. It's not going
to level a lawn the same way as the next tool, but we'll have a go at this here because we
already have this here. My worry with this is, it's pulling
it away from the areas that we want it. The next tool I'm going to show you is going
to level it a lot better. I'm going to say the tools that I've shown you today - if you
want to buy them, I'm going to leave Links to them down in the Video Description if you
use my Links then it helps support the Channel and makes Videos like this possible. So let's
get on and get this into working the lawn. So the next tool we're going to use is the
lawn lute. It's really handy just for leveling all this out. If you want to find out what the best compost
is - watch this Video next and I'll see you over there, now!
