hey guys welcome to my how to make me like a viking without any special equipment so this is going to be um if you've watched other people do this you probably know there's lots of different ways that you can go about it and there's lots of different things that you can use there's fancy tools there's uh there's there's carb carb things that keep the gas from doing uh to what not look up carbs for making meat you'll see what i'm talking about but we're not going to use any of that so this is basically you can get all this stuff pretty much anywhere so i'm going to give close-ups to what we have here but uh but basically first off what is mead me is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water sometimes with various fruits spices and grains the alcoholic content ranges from about 3.5 percent to more than 18 the defining characteristics of mead is that the majority of the beverages fermentable sugar is derived from honey it may be still carbonated or naturally sparkling dry semi-sweet or sweet mead was produced in ancient times throughout europe africa and asia and has played an important role in the mythology of some peoples in north mythology for example the mead of poetry was crafted from the blood of a wise being bossier and turned the drinker into a poet or scholar okay so that is the history of meat and what meat is so now we know that mead is basically the drink of the gods so you might know that that mead is uh became popular um or more known on the show vikings uh that they would do a lot of mead drinking and whatnot and they actually did use mead as a battle enhancer um sometimes thor is a big connoisseur of meat so we have thor represented right there because he's got to make sure that things are cool with this whole meat making process so you know this is what we do so um so basically um i am going to show you how i do this and it's a pretty simple process so um let's get started okay so what are you gonna need you're gonna need a pot to uh to make the water warm and you want the uh you want it to be not so hot maybe 90 degrees once it's it's all there and uh this right here is a is a sanitizer it's called step one and so you're going to want to get that you're going to want to have everything sanitized including um the honey container and all of the the the water bottles and stuff like that so everything that i have has already been sanitized so it is all clean and good to go so so yeah so that's the sanitizer you just clean everything first and um and what we're gonna what we're gonna do today is um what we're gonna do is like a light um it's kind of like a light mead so we're gonna do three gallons of water to the five pounds of honey and so what that's gonna do is that is gonna be it's gonna be like a light beer so it's like a light beer mead so okay so what do we have so so we have the five pounds of honey and then we have this is the yeast that uh that i use is red star there's different kinds i believe that this particular yeast is like a white wine um yeast there's also champagne yeast which is also super good um so this is going to give you you're kind of like standard meat so we have and over here this is where it gets super fancy super fancy this is where it gets super fancy and uh so the balloons are is what we're gonna end up using as the um the carb so to speak is where the gas is going to be coming out of the water bottles uh when it's made is going to be it's going to be coming out of there it's got to have somewhere to go so the balloons are going to be what that is for you poke a couple of holes in the balloons and it's going to let the degassing of the yeast and all that happen so uh so that is what that little pin is for right there on the balloon that little pin is to poke a hole or four or five in the balloon and you'll see me do all this so anyway so yeah so so that's it those those are the ingredients man that's it it's one honey water yeast that's it that's what meat is so you can do this it's so super simple and then you go wow i've done something really cool like once you get it all out there so it's done and it's like in your fridge and it lasts forever and it's super good for you and so okay wait before we get started first thing you're gonna have to do right now is subscribe to the channel click like on the video and ring the bell that's it okay now so basically this is going to be three gallons so we're gonna put in this is about two gallons so i'm gonna put in like a gallon and a half of water and then um and then the honey and uh and that is uh that's how we're gonna start [Music] oh yeah i forgot something we're gonna need a spoon okay so since i realized that that was a terrible shot from before we're gonna do like this like a cooking show so look at this magic just like i said a wooden spoon so basically uh yeah we're gonna heat the water up for a little bit and then uh put the honey in and like i said this is already sterilized so we're not gonna worry about it because i mean i'm gonna be putting the jar into there and um and so everything's gonna be fine okay so turns out since i haven't ever done a cooking show before i didn't really set this up exactly the way that i should have from the very beginning so if you will notice there is another thing that's on this table that was not on the table before that should that it should have said that you were going to need now one of the things was the spoon it's right there so now the spoon is there to stir the meat okay there's something else on the table that wasn't there in the beginning so comment what it is pause the video comment what it is and see if you're right go ahead okay we're back so god damn it okay so that was that can't use that all right so this is what this place looks like um with no power crazy all right so power went out because i don't normally cook in here um i had put too many things on the power strip for this uh hot plate so before you do a video about cooking things make sure that you test out the electricity first all right cool so so we got a good temperature on the water right now so we're going to go ahead and pour the honey in and now some people if you've watched other videos of this some people will do like a small batch of honey like a just a a little small thing and then put the uh put the yeast in there and to kind of get like the yeast going before they add more water i don't think it really matters but um it doesn't do it however you like i mean if you want to do it like that but but this is basically the easy way to do this and yes this is all sterilized and my hands are clean and everything is clean so so this is just getting all of the honey from the jar don't want to waste any of this because honey is not cheap voila clean jar okay so you're gonna just wanna just start until you get that honey all all mixed into the water and then see what you'll notice is that we're gonna end up with like empty water bottles that you're going to fill right back up for the mead now i happen to have a couple of extra ones um because it doesn't quite work out on the transfer because you end up with a little bit more water than you had bottles because of the honey because of the five pounds of honey yeah this is my uh this is my grandmother's crock pot that she that she left to tracy and i so this has been in the family for a long time or dutch oven excuse me dutch oven not crock-pot go ahead and fill up fill that pot up a little more with your other bottle so that's that's about two gallons right there so we're gonna make a three gallon batch like uh like for the light for the light beer type stuff so you could make this with just two gallons um of water and so that you end up with two gallons so like a gallon a half of water and the five pounds of honey and that would actually be a little bit stronger so it'll be more like a brandy kind of thing but um you know that's for like the parties and stuff like that but you know i just like to have like a like beer every once in a while so that's why i kind of dilute it a little more with another gallon of water all right so we got uh we have the honey water mixture pretty warm right now so now is when i'm gonna put all of this yeast into that first pot um so and some people do it different some people put like you know two packets per gallon and then put the honey in and mix it up like that it doesn't really matter some people will tell you that it matters and i might get some blow back for saying that but it really doesn't so i mean basically and the title of this was uh you know how to make me like a viking wood and so if that was actually the case a viking would basically put mead in a in a giant still and throw some some uh wool over it and whatnot so this is nothing like that and we don't didn't have electricity didn't have uh this kind of yeast that you can buy on amazon so this is just the simplistic kind of way of doing things and um just to show that it doesn't have to be quite so technical as uh as you might think so it's not it's not a difficult thing so so yes i'm just gonna put all six of these little packets into that jammy and then mix it up see if you were in here you would smell that it starts to smell like bread because that's what yeast does it smells like bread okay so i'll take your little spoon here and mix it up so this two gallons right here um now if i had a bigger pot i would have done it all in one big batch and done three gallons and that would have just been it but this is as big of a pot as i have so i have to heat up the the last gallon of water um separately so i'll show you how to keep this all even is by basically you just fill up those other gallons equally and um and that is how you do that so as this is being warm and with me kind of mixing it up the the yeast is coming alive and starting to i mean it's already alive but it's starting to eat the honey and um and that is what makes alcohol is um when yeast eats sugar you get alcohol so that's all all alcohol is is um it's yeast stuff if you were if you will so yeah let's clean this up make it like you know a clean kitchen as it were okay now what we're gonna do is we're going to evenly fill up these jammies right here and these jammies are the these jammies are the gallons so this is pretty pretty warm right now and what i'll do just to uh to make sure that the honey mead um yeast mixture is all the same because i'll just like do this per bottle like one two three one two three just like that okay okay so then you just heat you just warm this up just to keep it warm and then fill the rest of those bottles up hey guys if you want to help support the channel you can just go down to the description and click on our etsy link for this video t-shirt which is the good luck symbol in viking times good luck through all weather travels no matter the weather and i screen print these myself and i'll send you a signed postcard from preacher six so please uh help support the channel and independent film in the link below i'd say this water is warm enough so we're just gonna go ahead and fill up the rest of these gallons and since there were there's really no no meat or no honey in there anymore it doesn't matter which which order you you do these okay so what i like to do is i like to use um leave like about an inch and a half of gap in um at the top of the bottles so that you have room for the yeast like to uh to degas so and um and now the magic of the balloons so what are the balloons for the balloons are like we said in the beginning for the top of the bottles so you just basically just put them over just like that and then uh what the balloons are for is to keep oxygen from getting into the bottles because um oxygen will not make the meat good so so you want to have no oxygen in here so that's why you basically keep these balloons on on the bottles until you are ready and um and basically this is pretty fast mead so i'd say in about a week to 10 days you're you're good you have yourself some some light beer mead so oops all right and now for the magic of the pin so what you want to do is basically just poke like you know through there one two three four five times and then that's going to be where the gas can escape and not basically blow off the lid or something like that so it's just a way for the bottle to degas because that's gonna be happening okay so i'm gonna set these up and see if we can't catch the moment that the uh the balloons fill up so that you can see what that looks like uh so we'll be right back okay so that is how the um the balloons fill up so you'll notice right down here all this foam and whatnot so that is the yeast on top of here and um and yeah so look at that the balloons filled up so that is just basically degassing and that will be doing that for um the next i would say week 10 days hey guys thank you so much for watching how to make me like a viking without expensive gear so um there's one thing that i forgot to tell you that um you're gonna probably want to have just a few of these little guys right here the coffee filters and um what that's going to be for is this is going to continue to degas like this is going to keep the pressure in there for as long as it's going so which means that uh it is little bits of like honey water into the air just like little tiny bits and then over a week and a half lots of little tiny bits of honey water is gonna get into the air and potentially get like things sticky so what i do is i just put coffee filter right over the balloons and um and that will that'll keep things from getting sticky so and then what you what you can do like once a day i'll i'll go and just kind of like uh turn them so so i just i'll show you so i put my uh my hand on the balloon like that so you got them covered and then i'll just like flip it upside down and then flip it back upside down like put back the right side up so that uh that just like mixes the yeast up and just kind of gives it a little gives a little kick so i do that like once a day so um so that's a good little thing right there so you may be wondering what this is so this is a batch that i had made before um and it's called the viking blood and what that is is there's a cherry juice and honey in that and um and that is absolutely delicious so this particular batch is this stronger than this batch so i made it with two gallons of of the honey and the cherry juice and um so let's see if it's good shall we we'll just have a sip [Music] skull mm-hmm that's damn good so if you want me to do a video on how i made the viking blood just comment below and then maybe we'll do a video for the viking blood so uh thank you so much hope you all enjoyed this and uh peace out skull cheers slandra we'll see you next time [Music] you
