guys Welcome to My Vegan kitchen this week guess what we're making we're making carrot dogs you gotta believe me these taste exactly like hot dogs so come with me I'm gonna do it now [Music] let's start with a pot of boiling water boil boiling salted water so let's get that started because we have to go prepare the carrots this is the funniest thing to me so even though I'm plant-based vegan plant-based vegans are crazy y'all cause whoever came up with this is genius I the first time I heard about it I thought it was the most ridiculous thing ever I was like I don't really like carrots like that so I'm like this is this is not gonna taste good that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard but I'm always willing to try everything once when I tried it I fell in love I was like this tastes exactly like hot dogs so stick with me now stick with me I'm gonna use four carrots so here we go comments that they can see these are my four carrots all right I'm going to let's use this one I try to choose carrots these are the four that I had left but I try to choose carrots that are a little depending how you want your hot dog if you like a thick hot dog get a thicker carrot you know thinner hot dog get a thicker carrot a thinner carrot but this is what I have I kind of have a mix I try to cut the tops off if there is any kind of um uh leaves on the top and I cut the bottom off just a little bit because I'm trying to get them to a uniform shape now they're not going to be perfectly uniform obviously one side is way bigger and if you took too much of the one side off you're just going to be wasting your carrot so I try to just do it just to kind of to the eyeball look uniform it's going to be in a bun so does it really matter I'm going to use a vegetable peeler and just peel off the skin all right so I'm doing four carrots you could do as many as you like four is kind of you know what I started with I noticed I'll eat two my husband will eat two but if more people are over or if I'm going to a barbecue I will um make more but these are just again it's another easy easy recipe to make it it's actually it's effortless there's really nothing really to do so what I like to do you don't have to but I like to use my peeler and I kind of just round out so if you come in you could see I'm kind of rounding out the edges okay and just so you know I could care less for the comments like comments are actually funny to me so come on come on with y'all comments the funnier the better I love it because I just think it's just wonderful that we can find creative ways to make foods that we remember and are nostalgic and that tastes really good from vegetables crazy right let me get a container to put this in let's let's pop it in this container right here all right so that's one down and let me do the others I'm gonna do the same thing like I just showed you cut off the top this see this one's a little bit skinny so I'm going to cut off more of the skinny part um I actually have these marinated already but I just wanted to kind of show you so I probably wouldn't use these skinny um hot these skinny ones for hot dogs because they're kind of tiny I would have always chosen the fatter ones but I was just kind of wanted to show you guys the technique of how I do the corners just you know kind of use your peeler to round out Corners this little baby one probably will be for the younger kids because it's so tiny but I'm gonna continue to do the other ones and then show you the next step in our uh carrot dogs all right guys that's what the carrots should look like okay so they're around my dog at the top so they look like a hot dog all right so our saucepan is boiling with our salted water so we're just gonna drop them right in all four we want to be careful not to overcook this so I would definitely definitely suggest that you time these I'm going to time them for about 10 to 12 minutes so let's go ahead and put the timer on I'm going to actually put it on a 10 I'd rather at a time be shorter than longer just so it doesn't overcook you want to cook your carrots come on so you could see it's going to start boiling so I put them in boiling water you want to make sure the water is boiling first it's going to take a little bit of time to get back um boiling again but when the carrots are cooked you're going to know they're cooked take a knife and you're going to pierce them it should be soft enough for the knife pierce the carrot but firm enough where it's not mushy if that makes any sense so that's why I said have a timer so you're really timing it just right because a minute over and it's going to become mushy and then it's going to be like carrots and we want to still have the firmness like a hot dog okay let me let this cook and I'm going to show you what's next all right these are our ingredients and don't worry guys I will have all of the ingredients listed below and the measurement so let me freestyle it now we're going to use some rice and vinegar and I'm choosing a container that I can place this in the refrigerator because it has to be marinated for at least 24 hours 12 to 24 hours but I'm telling you guys the longer the better because the flavors really get inside of those carrots and just it just tastes like a hot dog it's just crazy I know I'm just like laughing through this whole thing this is one I mean oyster mushroom as Fried Chicken yeah I get that um carrots as salmon I get that but a hot dog a carrot that's a hot dog all right let me continue let me continue all right rice vinegar we're gonna place that inside of our container let's do some liquid aminos that is our salt we get that in our container smoked paprika get that in there some onion powder and some garlic powder pop top I'm always taking in there some mustard you gotta get some mustard in there and garlic but with the garlic we're not going to chop the garlic we're gonna put it in a garlic press because we want to get all the flavor from that garlic into this carrot so we're putting it in the garlic press in the garlic and getting all the flavor that we need so our marinade is ready there was only one ingredient that I forgot to mention and it is super important I don't know how I forgot that Liquid Smoke you have to add Liquid Smoke I don't know how I forgot that but I added it to it so let's go over now to the um hot dogs because they have cooked I allow these to cook 10 minutes they were on the smaller side and that's why I said gauge it between 10 and 12 minutes these are on a smaller size so they cooked within the 10 minutes I use my knife to test it out and it was it's pretty good it is perfectly how we want it to be you're just going to take it from the hot pot right into your marinade this will allow the marinade to really absorb into your hot dog with the magic of TV I have them already marinated now these have been marinated for two days I would probably suggest that you marry them for at least 24 hours I know some places they'll say 12 hours but to get that really really really good flavor at least 24 hours so just do it a day ahead of time I just waited two days because I was waiting to do this video for you guys so these are nice and marinated now come and take a look you can see what they look like that's what they look like our hot dogs are nice now they're they're good they're good look at all that that look good that looks real good my Skillet I'm just going to use a cast iron skillet you could use whatever Skillet you have I have it on medium I put some grape seed oil in the pan and we're gonna get that heated we got our Skillet ready it's nice and hot let's put our carrot dogs in start with this one nice got party time I think my cameraman is scared of the sizzle all right so we're just gonna place it in a hot pot and get it nice and seared I'm gonna cover it just so it doesn't make a mess all over my kitchen all right let's take a little I ground up on one side I flipped them over there it is I'm flipping them over just so they get brown on all sides I don't have to cover them now just when they first go in because you know it's hot oil and the marinade it's liquid it starts splashing everywhere hot dogs are ready let me take a look now guys you don't have to cook it in a skillet you can put it on the barbecue grills it will work just fine on the barbecue breath I just like it on a skillet I don't know why I always like fried hot dogs all right I got me some hot dog buns get your favorite these I got at um Whole Foods and I looked at ingredients they are vegan so we're just gonna pop these right in here all right look at these look at these don't do what you're saying hot dogs Hot Dog Perfect these are so good all right let's set them down and let's talk about them crazy right they look like hot dogs if you get the right shape and shape them just right then you could trick people they won't know now when they bite into it it a hot dog but obviously it doesn't have that weird hot dog texture you know it is going to be a if you cook it perfectly right it will have that firmness it's very convincing honestly it's very convincing like I said I was skeptic plenty of my friends were skeptic and I've given them this recipe and every single time they're like damn you were right it tastes like a hot dog now you could dress it up however you like I have some baked beans here that I'm gonna have it with some sauerkraut because that is my favorite I'm from New York and I'm used to the dirty hot dogs when we put the sauerkraut and the beans and mustard and ketchup on it so let's do it up right mustard first then I put my sauerkraut and guys when you think about it like if you're trying to eat healthy it's actually healthy so if you put the carrot dog right then you got sauerkraut which is cabbage which is a great for your gut it gives you good gut bacteria you got some beans again great for your digestion great for your body and probably the only bad thing here that I could see if you don't make your own ketchup oops is the ketchup and the bun I ended up getting wheat buns instead of enriched white buns but there's my hot dog guys there's my hot dog look at that all right let's taste it oh I haven't had this since last summer so I'm so excited um that is like a hot dog guys when I
