stick around and i'll show you how i made this awesome cutting board frank does it so i'm starting off with some pieces that are way too big for my jointer so i put it on my flattening sled i'm using shims here to make it to where it doesn't wiggle around and stuff and this will end up giving me a flat surface on the top you can just secure all this down with hot glue works pretty good i like to mark these boards up so i make sure i got it all once all the marks are gone then you know you got a flat surface that's referenced off that planer sled so then i'll just pop it off here flip it around and then uh mark it up then we can send our newly flattened face through the planer but first let's get a 90 degree corner on everything by using the jointer then it's over to the planer to get our two parallel surfaces and two 90 degree corners then we'll take it over the table saw and start ripping up our pieces for the cutting board and as you can probably tell we're using black walnut cherry and maple on this cutting board [Music] then my lovely assistant will help me out spreading this glue we'll get this thing glued up and never mind the chicken brooder in the back i got some young chicks in there that we're trying to get going isn't my helper so adorable all right let's get it all clamped up as you can tell i like using tyvek when i do glue ups um i put tyvek tape on my clamps and then i put tyvek tape on these calls that i'm using these are just solid pieces of maple with tyvek on them tyvek works excellent against glue glue won't stick to it so and then after letting the glue dry overnight we'll get it out of the clamps and then we'll get it prepped up to be able to cut it up again and then just like before i'm going to use this flattening sled only this time instead of using the planer i'm going to use the drum sander with 60 grit sandpaper to remove this squeeze out and flatten the top and you can totally use the planer for this step i just prefer the drum sander so that the dry glue doesn't chip up my planer knives and i really don't like scraping glue so this is a little bit more gentle and that glue is not really going to damage the sandpaper too much now we can go and flip it back over mark it up and send it back to the drum sander this will give us two parallel surfaces again and we'll be ready to cross cut it up once i get this glue removed then i'll switch to 180 grit sandpaper that'll smooth it out a little bit and give us a better gluing surface for our next step or like i said earlier you can do this with the planer now go ahead and gear up to make our cross cuts now go ahead and give it a clean cut here this will give us a 90 degree corner then i'll measure and mark how big i want my pieces set up a stop block and go to town if you'd like to build this crosscut sled i'll leave a link in the description to some free downloadable plans and for whatever reason this part right here is always so enjoyable to me flipping it around and figuring out how you want it to look now i got my other lovely assistant out here to help me with this glue up my kids love helping with these glue ups they get glue on their hands and then they enjoy trying to peel it off so my lovely assistant is handing me these pieces just to expedite things and again i'm going to emphasize the use of tyvek tape it really works super well on these calls it always amazes me what the amount of wood i start with how small this board turns out once you make it into an end grain still the same amount of wood but it's just crazy how much wood it takes to make one of these [Music] thanks honey now that the glue is dry we can get these clamps off resurface everything and you'll see it's starting to look like a real nice cutting board here and if you couldn't tell by now i like using this flattening sled specifically on the drum sander when doing this end grain you can run end grain through a planer but you have to be a lot more careful because bad things can happen if you take too much wood or it's in their cockeyed or whatever it can be bad so don't do it unless you know what you're doing you can also use a flattening jig with a router that works too then i'm just getting everything lined up so i can put it on this jointing jig the pencil marks i can line them up just right with the edge of the thing there and then then i've got a straight cut right here [Music] you can easily make yourself one of these jigs it's not too hard you can find the hardware and the clamps and the router bit to do so in the description i'll have it listed down there then i'll just use a square to square it up to the sled and i'll clean up the other side oh just barely enough that's at full capacity this board's thick and i think it looks really nice to put a nice round over on there so i'm using my palm router and a round over bit [Music] and here i'm using my homemade handle cutting jig with my router my plunge router pretty nice you can adjust those wings to match whatever size you want for the handle then you do a whole lot of sanding but i don't record that because this is boring to watch as it is to do and now is the fun part yeah this is just a vat of mineral oil 100 food safe mineral oil i let it sit in there for 20 minutes minimum we want the board to be fully impregnated then i let it drip dry and i'll put a beeswax mineral oil mixture and buff it out i did that off camera sorry you can watch more of my videos here if you want to know what i got going on more frequently you can follow me on these social
