hey guys this is someone here from the UI King well a few months back we have designed and built a wind turbine completely out of the scratch using a whole board motor the project was a success and the build video seems to gain a whole lot of interest but later we came across another interesting design that offers rotation around the vertical axis in contrast to the horizontal axis wind turbine that we have built earlier the design seems to offer quite a bit of output power which seems a bit confusing to me not only because of its size but the way this whole thing is going to work so in today's video we are going to design and build a vertical axis wind turbine using the same hoverboard motor and a bunch of commonly available hardware and see if it's worth building one or not to start with we have got a permanent magnet brushless outrunner motor from an old powerful as the whole turbine is going to be based around the motor so we need to do some modifications and thus we are going to take the motor apart [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] as the pain rise we started working on the blades now to keep things simple we are going to use 6-inch PVC pipe let's cut along the length into two halves to form a pair of blades measuring 36 inch in length later we trimmed the blades from either side to avoid sharp edges now in total we are going to have six blade that's mounted vertically around the motor and as the wind blows the curved faces of the blade receives the air while the opposite sides make their way through the vent this arrangement of blade eliminates the need of a tail mechanism as the blade keeps facing the wind regardless of its direction so with that being done we are ready to assemble the turbine [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] since our turbine is based around the whole board motor which offers three-phase alternating current so we have designed a three-phase rectifier unit to convert it into a more useful DC voltage to charge our battery bank later here I would love to thank jlc PCB for making this project possible they have one of the largest PCB manufacturer around the globe offering the finest services for manufacturing and assembly of your customized printed circuit boards right at your doorstep so to make the rectifier unit as neat as our turbine we have ordered the PCBs from GLC the process is is straightforward as shown on their website now don't forget to visit their website the link is in the description below once the PCBs arrive we gathered all the components and started soldering them in place now that's the same rectify unit that we have used with our horizontal axis wind turbine so after soldering the components for a couple of minutes the rectifier unit is ready and yes this thing looks pretty neat now with that being done we are ready to mount and test our turbine if you haven't seen our previous on generator built video then go check it out as that turbine produced nearly 150 watts of power with winds blowing at seven miles per second so we replace the previous generator with our vertical axis wind turbine and the output was then connected to the rectify unit the turbine is started is spinning as soon as we'll let it go with the wind's blowing at around seven meters per second the blades is started is spinning at a moderate speed but that doesn't seems enough as the motor was still not a spinning as fast as we expected it because we need around five hundred rpm to get same results as we have got with a horizontal axis wind generator later the wind speed in trees but to our surprise that didn't help the turbine to spin faster which to our observation was because of the major flaw with the design of this turbine now as the Binda speed increases it pushes the blades to spend faster but on the other side that same air flow increases the drag due to which we are unable to get any sufficient output and eventually he decided to switch back to our previous generator which was more efficient with the same setup and the same airflow now that was our take on building a vertical axis wind turbine so share your thoughts in the comment section down below hit the like button if you learned something new and if you want us to continue working on such kind of the our project videos then consider supporting us on patreon with as low as 5 bucks a month the link is in the description below guys we'll soon be there with another awesome DIY project video so stay tuned
