now if you've ever wanted to capture one of these stop-motion videos but just not being sure how then it might be a lot easier than what you think in fact in this video I'm going to show you how you can capture shots that look just like this using your smartphone it's coming up [Music] hey everyone Steve here from learn online video and today we're going to be simplifying everything when it comes to stop motion I'm going to be breaking the process down into three simple steps so that you can follow along and create your own a big thanks to epidemic sound for sponsoring this video this is where I'll be getting all of my sound effects for the final edit now for those of you that don't know stop emotion is a filming technique where you take a series of photos and then play them back as video and this gives the illusion of movement even though each frame is a still image but how you take these still images is crucial in the success of your final results so let me show you how step one equipment and preparation now as a minimum you're gonna need a few things to get started a smartphone you're going to need some kind of light to light your scene I'm going to use this lamp you're going to need something to animate I'm going to use this red sports car a phone holder or mini tripod is really going to help and finally some modeling right okay so in front of me here I've set up a scene and we're almost ready to start shooting but before we do that it's really important that nothing changes or moves in between taking these images we don't want the desk to wobble in any way we don't want the lighting to change in any way that will cause Flicker and we don't want our camera to move the only thing that we want moving in this scene is what we're animating now for me the most important part of this whole process is keeping your camera nice and steady and there are a number of different ways that you can do this you could use a mini tripod like what I'm doing here the most budget way is to Simply use modeling clay or plasticine with your phone in a phone holder you can then press it into the clay to keep it nice and still for the purpose of today's video and just keeping things nice and simple I'm going to animate this car racing around the desk this will also give me a really good opportunity to add sound effects to the final edit and this is really going to bring the animation to life but for now let's start shooting some footage now there are a number of different ways that you can capture your still images you can do this using your phone's nature camera app but the problem with this is that you just end up with a bunch of pictures and what we want is animation we want video so by far the best quickest and easiest way to capture these images is by using a dedicated stop motion app I'm going to be using stop-motion Studio it's free and available on both Android and Apple now the first thing we're going to do when we open the app is to create a new movie We're then going to go into our settings and put the camera in manual mode we want all of these settings locked in manual white balance Focus ISO and shutter speed now the basic process for capturing a stop-motion video is to take an image move your object take an image remove your object then repeat this process until you have all the images to create the animation but the problem with touching your phone to take each image is that you run the risk of moving your camera and ruining your shot even the smallest of movements will be noticeable in the final edit so if your tripod isn't particularly steady or you find that you're moving your camera every time you tap the screen then there's a feature within this app that's really going to help and that's this timer icon here and we could for example select this timer so that it takes a photo every five seconds we're going to hit record and we now have five seconds to move our object before it takes another image this means we don't need to touch our phone in order to take each image and this really helps keep the final video nice and steady another little hack here is if you have a set of headphones like this with the volume button built in this volume button also doubles as a trigger for the camera so another great way to take each image without touching your phone now I'm going to animate this car skidding around the corner but let's say I make a mistake maybe something in the scene moves by accident well another great feature in this app is this slider on the left here because when I slide it down it shows me the two previous images so I can now line up my car so that it flows perfectly with all the other images a really useful feature so I'm going to repeat this process until I've done at least one lap around the desk okay so I have my movie Speed set to 12 frame frames per second we could go faster but let's start here and this is what it looks like so far and look this might be all that you're after in which case great you can just export your movie here save it to your phone and you're done but I always try and be a bit more creative than that and there's so much more that we can do to help improve this video we could for example put our camera low on the desk like this and animate a shot of the car as it skids around the corner this will be great for adding sound effects too and why stop there if we capture a few more of these shots we could create a short sequence this will be way more interesting than just a couple of Standalone Clips let's treat this animation like what we would any other short film or scene and get creative with the angles let's capture a top-down shot for this I attached my phone to an extension pole and clamped it to a tripod this will give us a much more unique perspective now instead of Simply animating this car cycling the desk which is boring let's create a scene with a clear beginning middle and end we can start with a shot of the car's wheel as it pulls away then Circle the desk and then end with something dramatic also up until now all of the shots have been locked off Static shots no camera movement but it is possible to create these stop-motion videos with a moving camera let me quickly show you how for the final shot so this time I'm going to take a picture move the camera and the car take a picture move the camera and the car and I'm going to repeat this process until I've got what I need also another tip here for those of you that want to animate your object flipping or moving in unusual ways then try using modeling clay to hold up your object and help keep it steady okay right we now have all of the images we need to create our final sequence but before we do that I'm just going to go through all of these images to make sure there's nothing here that shouldn't be like this Rogue one here delete I can now export this video and save it to my phone ready for the final stage which is editing now what editing software you use to do this is completely up to you it really doesn't matter you can edit this on your phone using free editing software or you can even send the file to your desktop or laptop and edit it that way but before you start to edit your video it's really important that you add one of the most important and elements when it comes to stop motion and that's sound effects so for this I'm going to head over to epidemic sound and grab everything that I need so I'm going to type in cars into the search engine and see what comes up okay we've got this modern Cars album let's try this we've got car engine rev nice we've got car pass by all of this is really going to help now epidemic sound offer a free 30-day trial to anyone that uses the link in my description so you can use the exact same sound effects as me or choose your own and what's great about epidemic sound is that everything is really easy to find so this saves you a ton of time also if I find a sound effect that I like I hit find similar and this takes me to a list of sound effects that sound similar to what I'm looking for really useful and I can download as many of these sound effects as I like I could download some cinematic music if I wanted to there's a track here literally called car chase I could add that to this sequence but again let's just keep things simple and use sound effects if you'd like to try epidemic sound for free I will leave a link in the description below okay once you got your sound effects import them into your chosen editing software for this I'm going to be using Final Cut Pro I've got my stop-motion video on my timeline you could at this point edit your Clips to put them in a different order or just leave them as they are and you're now ready to start adding your sound effects I'm going to add the timer and the pull away sound effect at the beginning like this making sure that the sound lines up with the visuals I'm now going to continue this process with all the other sound effects and this is the final result all right so what did you think of that final sequence with all the added sound effects do let me know in the comments section below be sure to try our stop motion for yourself using your phone it's a lot easier than what you might think and hopefully these tips have helped but that's it from me thanks for watching and I will see you in the next video
