[Music] hi everybody I'm Natalie with Missouri Star Quilt Company and I have a fun quilt to teach you today I called this quilt starflight because I think these are beautiful stars and they kind of just look like they're taken off it's got a lot of fun movement and I promise it's going to be a little easier than it looks okay so to make my quilt you're going to need one package of 10in squares and I have used Feed My Soul by Sandy jve for Riley Blake designs you'll need some accent and background fabric the accent that I used is this beautiful peach Kona you'll need a yard and 38 of that that includes your Cornerstone fabric um for your background you're going to need 4 and 1 E yards and I've used Kaa snow there is no border on this quilt but you could certainly add one if you wanted to but for your backing you're going to need 7 and a/4 yards of regular uh 40 40 wide fabric just regular um if you're using a 108 you'll need 2 and 1/2 yards all right so we are ready to get started so the first thing we're going to do is take a couple of matching squares well not matching contrasting squares we're going to go with a light dark or you know different colors that you so you can see the different parts what we're going to start with is making this section of the block so this is this is a quarter of the block and we're going to start by making this little four patch right here it's kind of a four patch Diamond so we're going to take these two Fabrics these are our contrasting pieces we're going to stack them on top of each other and cut them into 2 and 1/2 in strips all righty then we are going to sew these into strip sets of two each one um going in the same direction which so we'll have four of these four strip sets of two so I'm going to sew those all right now I've got a bunch of these made already because this is a pretty simple part of the step I don't think we need to re go over it very many times there's there's trickier stuff coming up so we're going to press this open and then what we're going to do we're going to have four of these so here's my other ones and you can stack these if you're brave or you can cut them one at a time and the way you're going to cut this this is the trickiest part here you're going to lay your 45° angle along the bottom of your strip set and I usually pull it over just about an eighth of an inch on this little corner right here and you are going to cut on that bias line you're going to slide that out of the way and cut make another cut at the 2 in mark and you should get two of these set strips now if your um if this line up here is over a bit on the top that's okay it's okay if it's even a quarter of an inch over you will have enough room and it'll line up just fine so don't stress about that that um that's dependent on where you start at the bottom all right so we're going to do that to our entire set and we're going to have a bunch of pieces that look like this and what we're going to do is flip one to create our little four patch now when you go to sew them you're going to line them up like this and it gets a little tricky because if you're if they're not lined up right this Center isn't going to match you're not going to have like a really pretty four patch point so I have a little trick for that and I'm going to show you if you line up your seam right here and the width of your seam is/ quart of an inch you got to look at these these little fabrics and you just overlap them by the quarter of an inch so where your fabric ends and where the seam begins it should nest in that way let's sew this and you're going to repeat this for all of your strip sets all right now we're going to press this back and you should have little Diamond sets that look about like that so I've got let's see I've got one more over here oh good I did them the same you want to make sure that when you s when you stitch them all together that all of your Fabrics are in the same direction so that your star goes the the right way it doesn't really matter which color you choose just as long as your four patches are all oriented with the same colors in the same places okay so for this next part you're going to need 4 in squares of a print and 4in squares of your background so I went ahead and cut a 4in strip of my background Fabric and I will cut my 4in squares from that these ones will get um they will get cut on the diagonal once so we'll just cut a few of these and we're going to cut them on the diagonal so these are going to go um up here like this and then we'll need some print triangles for the bottom part of our you only need two I believe you need two squares per block all right so these go just like that so the way that I line these up I make sure I have a quarter of an inch hanging over the um this Edge and then I go ahead and Stitch them on both sides top and bottom so let's do that real quick I'm going to do this one all right then I'm going to flip these around and I'm going to put the white triangles or the background triangles on the other end same method having a little quarter inch hang off at the very beginning where we start okay now we're going to take these and press them and this is the hardest part is over I promise it's so much easier from here once you've got these done you are in in the clear all righty so these should measure about um 9 1/2 by 3 and 1/2 and if you want to you can go ahead and square them or you can just take your scissors and trim off these little dog ears because they're just kind of they kind of get in the way it's not a big deal you can stitch through them a lot of times I went ahead and left them and then stitched them if they got in my way or clipped them off if they were in my way but that's just a preference thing you know if it bothers you clip them off so these pieces should measure 3 and 1/2 by 9 and 1/2 and now it's time to make this second section with background so this is a 3 and 1/2 by 6 and 1/2 in rectangle with a 6 and 1/2 in square here and the 3 and 1/2 in square to snowball so let's get started on that all right so I've got some background squares already cut if I can find them there we go I've got one of these and I've got a 3 and 1/2x 6 and 1/2 in rectangle of my accent Fabric and then I have some 3 and 1/2 in squares and what I'm going to do is draw the line from corner to corner on these and we're going to sew right on the line now one of the things that helps me remember how these have to go is if you're looking at the way that the the um squares line up here so if you can see this this white square um this angle has to meet that angle so these are the star legs technically so they need to match up so if you are h having your Fabrics here you can be you can lay them out and look at them so that you can kind of keep that in mind as you go that you're always going to be stitching on your accent fabric from top left to bottom right all right let's get this one stitched and trimmed and flipped and then we'll get these quadrants put together where's the there we go it's down there somewhere all right and you're probably thinking you could make something with that little triangle it'd be so cute but not today okay and all of these I stitch together with the the larger pink side to the um background so put them together like that and it's easier for me to start at this end because a lot of times I get this it like sucks into the feed dogs and creates a little Nest so I just flip them over and Stitch them with my background Square on top you can do whichever is comfortable for you I was just sharing you know the helpful hints that help us all but also it's not imperative to the process you can do whatever is comfortable for you okay so we'll do four of those press this back got a little bit of a mess over here today that is all right okay now we're going to attach this piece to this piece and we're going to have a quarter of our block made it's a lot easier than it looks I think I'm pretty excited about this one okay go ahead and get that pressed and that's it that's your quarter quarter unit for the block so we are going to grab the other parts of our block and put this together I think it looks really cool I've got half sewn together just for efficiency so what I'm going to do is Stitch these two together and then I will Stitch this half to that half and we'll have a finished block all right you kind of want to watch the the area where the two star legs come together but if they don't match up perfectly it's not a big deal that your star will still look pretty okay you want to Nest your seams right in the middle because there is a pin wheel here in the middle um you'll have a little bit of extra bulk there so just make sure that they're going in opposite directions and that will help for your that'll help you to get a flat block all those little checkpoints along the way okay let's give it a press and we'll see how it did I like to kind of flatten out my seams a bit before I open it up and I usually on these ones because there's a little bit of bias I kind of start by pressing the middle flat and then I go out from there so I don't you don't want to push too hard and stretch it so just be gentle when you're pressing this is a good block to use starch on there's bias because we've cut on the 45° angle but everything else is straight grein so you should be good to go all right so this is our finished block and I just love it I think it's so cute I think it would look great in so many different Fabrics so we went ahead and did four across do your block will be just like this 1 2 3 4 by four down the block measures 18 1/2 in square so your sashing is going to be 18 1/2 x 2 and 1/2 your cornerstones are also 2 and 1/2 so it makes the quilt go together super easy there's no border so you can just do a little Stay Stitch on this thing and send it to your quilter um it ends up being 78 by 78 and I want to show you this backing that we used this is such a great print from the line I think it just turned out so fun it's one of those ones where Mom likes to say perfect points and I just love it I think it's so cute uh I went ahead and finished with the Meander stitch pattern and it's just one of those classic easy ones that goes together your quilter will love you um yeah so it turned out really fun so I hope that you've enjoyed this tutorial on the starflight quilt from the Missouri Star Quilt Company thank you so much for joining me for this video today I hope that you enjoyed it and
