[Music] hi everybody I'm Natalie with Missouri Star Quilt Company and today I have a fun project for you I'm calling this the prism path quilt because it kind of reminds me of like a patio garden layout where all the bricks come together and make this really beautiful thing um I just love it it's made all using half Square triangles and so it's going to be great super easy but it looks a little bit more complex because I think we have some fun color placement in this quilt so let's get started um to make this quilt you're going to need a package of 10-in print squares and I've used Misty Garden by Laura Skinner for Robert Kaufman you're going to need some yardage amounts and we've got this background you're going to need four yards of the Kona color of the year julip the accent Fabrics you need a a yard and a quar of each and I just have a white and then this yarn dyed black Essex linen so 1 and 1/4 yards of each of those and then you're backing you're going to need eight and 3/4 yards or 2 and 1/2 yards of a 108 this is a very large quilt it's 80 by 96 this fabric is absolutely beautiful on the back it's this large floral print very pretty multicolored um the machine quilting pattern that I used is uh loops and Swirls and I just think it's pretty it just comes together looks really nice all right so let's get started so this is really [Music] fun so this is the block we're looking for this block is what makes up the entire quilt so let me show you how we do that from your um mint jeup your background fabric we are going to cut some 10in strips and some 4 and 1/2 in strips because we need both size uh squares to make up the block we'll do the 10in first these we're going to pair with our uh layer cake squares to make half Square triangles so we need one two three four five and five is 10 just wanted to double check that I never like to cut without counting twice I'm cut this Salvage edge off and then we will go another 10 actually I'm going to flip this around it'll be easier for me I am right-handed all the way can't uh all right so we'll set these aside side just for the moment then we're going to cut a 4 and 1/2 in strip off of each of the rest of our Fabrics because we just need a few 4 and 1/2 in squares that fill in the middles and the corners and I'm just going to cut this down cut off the Salvage and the fold all right I'm going to do one more from each of these just a a 4 and a half inch strip I I think I can probably stack them so I'm not doing very many at this point I'm just going to cut one strip of each this one needs to be straightened if you're going to stack your Fabrics just make sure that your folds are lined up and that you don't have um big any big wrinkles the reason this is okay is because it's we're cutting them down into squares so I'm not too worried about elbows or anything like that I am going to straighten up my first Edge though and then I'm going to cut 4 and 1 half inch strip put that away cut off my little Salvage edges who that one's in a little farther than I realized all right all right so the cutting is done for all of our little squares and these you're just going to set aside for later we will get to them so the next step is to make half Square triangles so we are going to use our make eight method which means you're going to take a piece of fabric from your layer cake and you're going to pair them with your julip 10in squares that we just cut you want to do this right sides together and these um the cut squares are a little little bit smaller Robert Koffman squares are measured from the outside of the peak so they they are sometimes just a little bit bigger than your cut yardage that you cut yourself whoops that's okay we're going to um we're going to just Center it up on the Square we're going to mark this corner to corner with two lines diagonally and you can use whatever pen or pencil you have handy it doesn't matter because that part is going to get cut cut off it's on the inside of your seam and you cut right through it okay so we are going to stitch on both sides of both lines all right so once we've got our seams sewn on both sides of both lines then we are ready to cut we're first going to cut it in half vertically and horizontally and then we will cut in between the seams that we just stitched so at this point you are going to want to square up these triangles to 4 and 1/2 and if you like the clearly perfect now is the time to do it I personally happen to love my block lock so I've got a 4 and 1/2 in Block lock which is just a a helpful squaring tool um so I'm going to go ahead and press these back and then Square them all to 4 and A2 and you can set your seams if you want to or not if you don't want to I'm not that picky on it you will do this to the entire layer cake because you'll need every block all right so once all of these are pressed then we're going to start our squaring the block lock is great because it has this little Edge and you just can slide that in there and lock it in place and trim up your edges okay so with all of our half Square triangles squared up it is time to go ahead and lay out the block so what we're going to do and I have some other colors in here because I did I did my um all of my blocks with uh several different Fabrics you need 10 half Square triangles per block and since you only get eight per layer cake set I just mixed them up and I think you can do that in lots of fun ways you can see this one I put like darks in the middle and lights on the out side a lot of the ones in here are just completely random um you know whatever whatever way you want to do it I think is going to be fun so let me lay this out so we start with our uh our darker accent Fabric and then we're going to do some half Square triangles to the middles and then we've got these ones going this way this is where our little green squares come in in the middle another one of these another one of those our white square finishes out this top corner and I've got to put one of these blue ones here it's fun how they they look when they're all built out that one and then we'll put two more Blues out here on the end followed by our last little white square in this corner and that is it that's the layout of the block all right so you'll see you'll notice that in my two opposite um Corners I've Got The White Square squares here and the dark squares on this side and you want to keep your blocks all consistent as you lay them out because that is what creates the pattern that you'll see in the quilt behind me now the half Square triangles you have um this little row of them facing in and then this row faces the opposite direction and then you have two green solid squares in the middle so all down this Center going from left to right you have solid squares and then these uh these half Square triangles you can do this a pattern where you have like lights or darks I think that's going to look really cool it'll create a really good good visual effect but if you just wanted to do completely Scrappy you could do that too um honestly there's lots of lots of creative options in this quilt things that you could do with color and um block placement but having having your darks here and your lights here and all your half Square triangles pointed towards the middle that is what is going to give you the block that creates the quilt behind me so once that block is sewn together you'll see it looks just like this one and I'll show you this in the quilt so we start up here with our gray gray up in the top left corner and then it turns every other block just like this so you flip them keeping these dark squares together and then the light squares join you'll have these larger blocks of color just like that and then flip it flip it again and one more so what we have here is we have one 2 3 four five by one 2 3 four five six so it's a 5x6 there's 30 blocks you really only need um you don't need the entire layer cake but I like to do the whole thing just so that we have lots of options for color and uh and that's it you're going to sew it together I didn't put a border on it cuz I felt like it was big enough already but if you wanted to that would be great it' look beautiful so that's it this quilt is super simple and fun to make I hope it's inspired you and that you have
