[Music] hi it's jen from shabby fabrics i have a project for you today that is absolutely adorable and practical my favorite combination i know at christmas time when i bring out that most important dinnerware that i reserve for christmas eve and christmas night i do not put that in the dishwasher instead i wash that by hand and i put that on a drying rack on top of a drying mat and isn't this beautiful this is brand new this is a combination of a bosal in our form sew-in it has this really neat kind of tacky characteristic to it and i'm one of our favorite pattern designers christine poor from poor house design designed the dry ideas pattern and there's so many possibilities with this pattern she shows you how to make the full size drying mat using this or you can cut that in half and make a camper size which so if you're in a smaller space or like she said maybe celebrating the holidays or any day really in a camper and you need that smaller size those are included and there's even a third style with paper piecing to do kind of the champagne wine glasses it's really beautiful so this is a really jam-packed pattern it's absolutely fantastic what i'm going to be showing you to do today is the strip piecing method you of course don't need to do that you could always just use a solid piece of fabric she shows you that option where if you just want to have one piece of fabric instead of doing strip piecing you can always do that or of course i love to be able to use the strips and one of the things that caught my eye this year is the hoffman jingle pops my christmas china i have a little bit of spode um that i was treated to a couple years back and it has that beautiful gold detail and when i saw the hoffman jingle pops both in the gold and the silver i thought that's the perfect drying mat to coordinate with my dishes so i love that they're pre-cut and they have that beautiful of course design and then also have the stroke of just gold metallic detail around most of the shapes so i've got a silver one here so you can see what that looks like i strip pieced both sides of that and then on the little camper size one as well as the one hanging up this is the gold and it's just beautiful so hoffman jingle pops are our favorite we've done the no sew christmas uh ornament with those and so many other projects so let's dive into this now as you can imagine i can't i'll give you the the framework of how this goes together specific measurements are in the pattern and i of course want to honor christine's pattern and make sure that you know i don't give the complete a pattern away on video or you wouldn't need to buy her pattern which has a lot of great content so she has graciously allowed me to show you many parts of that where you'll be able to absolutely jump in and be able to make these now the fun thing about using one of the jingle pops which have 40 strips or really any pre-cut is you'll be able to make four drying mats which is amazing because they make great gifts there i have drying mats upstairs i have them down in my guest area there's a little um sink there so people there's no dishwasher down by my guest area so that way they have a spot to be able to dry their dishes so you'll be amazed you will definitely find four people that want one of these mats so i love the idea of getting this already cut out it has the beautiful rounded shapes now if you're using something else for that you can also buy this in different quantities and maybe even buy yardage she also gives you inside the pattern those rounded corners but i just love the convenience of buying this and it's just ready to go her pattern includes two and a half inch strips and then different size strips on the ends but i thought it'd be fun to be able to do pre-cut strips the whole time so what i'm showing you today is just a little bit of a variation of what's included in the pattern so i'll specifically talk about the two and a half strips only and i just pieced nine of those together again that's a little bit different than what's inside the pattern but it allowed me to be able to continue using two and a half inch strips versus using a combination of strips and other size larger strips on the ends so the first thing that we'll want to do per our instruction in our pattern is we need to find we'll find i'm going to have you find your center by just folding this in half and by the way when you sew your strips together it's a regular quarter inch seam allowance and as you can see i just pressed my seams to one side now i went ahead and i just cut my strips halfway at the fold so let me get one of those out i kind of jumped ahead i'm so excited to show you this project i've always loved things that i can absolutely see the use of that over and over and i literally use a drying mat every single day in my house so i'm going to have them for christmas time and for everyday use as well so i went ahead and just cut my strips in half at the fold and pick my nine fabrics this could be the front and the back so they match or you could use completely different fabrics on the back and have the two sides completely different which is a lot of fun too so that's another option the reason i like to cut my strips in half versus just strip piecing all the way down selvage to selvedge which is about 43 inches is it when i find that i strip piece that long i kind of start to get a little bit of a curve or a bow in it and that's why i like to do shorter strips which is what i've done here and i've cut those down just actually i cut cut the selvage off and you can see my strips are i have two separate halves because i truly cut my strips in half so hopefully that makes sense to you all right so once i have this go ahead and fold that exactly in the center her instructions inside will let you know and i can see that and this is where the eight and a half inch ruler is really handy because you're going to be cutting specifically to where this eight and a half inch ruler makes very much just so much sense so i'm going to go ahead and make that cut i don't think i folded my fabric quite precisely let's try that one more time and i don't want to put a permanent press with an iron but more of just a finger press there and then i'm going to line that up top to bottom there we go i just had that a little bit crooked i think and i'm going to go ahead and measure over and i'm just going to go ahead and trim this up starting here and of course i'd be using the guide of the instructions inside my pattern as to what size to cut that to and this is one of the ones that's already been cut so i'll go ahead and finish that cut up and when i come back we're going to keep going and make our drying mat so my pieces all trimmed up and i would of course do the same thing with the other one which i showed you they're ready to go so you'll grab your form i love again that it's already there and just look at the tackiness like even as i try to drag it it doesn't want to move there's something they even mention it in the pattern they use some kind of term that this just has this kind of grabbing nature it's not sticky but it just it just doesn't fall off there's something about it that just makes it very tacky so you want to place your either a whole piece of fabric just if you're going the whole piece of fabric or your strip piece unit that's been trimmed to the size as indicated in the pattern whether using the full mat or you're doing the smaller camper mat by the way the camper mat when we were the samples um beth who is one of our graphic designers here by the way if you ever see instagram and all the images in karina just a shout out to those two women unbelievable photographers graphic designers they just do such a beautiful job of photographing that and beth has a beautiful dog and she's like this would be a great little pet mat so that's another idea of you know even if you want to leave the hanger off it might be a nice pet mat so i love that somebody else saw some other opportunities with the mat besides being just a drying mat so you'll want to go ahead and and put that right stacked exactly on top of that and as you flip it over isn't that amazing it doesn't even fall off you can clip it or not it it wants to stick on there i just wanted to show you that tackiness let me lay that on there one more time if you're worried about anything shifting rather than using your normal patchwork pins even the flower pins i would just use some wonder clips i love that they're easy to apply i'm just going to put a couple of things in there i don't think this is going to shift just because of the clinginess of this mat but just a little something to hold it together just in case when i move it over to the sewing machine but again just the technology that both will put into this mat is really cool it is not your normal just ordinary piece of foam by any means okay what the next instruction will be is to sew an eighth of an inch so we're you're a quilter maybe um don't sew that quarter that we're so used to doing now i'm just going to walk that that way just a touch and clip it so let's go ahead and get started an eighth of an inch all the way around now what i'm going to do is inside i'm working i'm on the bernina 770 i have a 1d foot and i have the dual feed engaged i'm just going to be looking in the inside of this part of my foot here and tracking to get that eighth of an inch okay boy that is the foot to use you know i'm always when i'm not quilting you know i'm like okay what's the best foot i think i chose the best one today with that one that's just such a confident foot so if you're working with a bernina that is definitely one to consider um you can see this part out here so you can either trim that with the rotary cutter if you're comfortable or scissors if you would prefer that you know really because using pre-cuts you really aren't going to be using this rotary cutter too much now i also brought out one another ruler my two and a half by 24 and a half let's say you're like i i want to use my scraps i don't want to buy a new product grab the two and a half by 24.5 inch ruler what makes that so nice is you can just lay that on your fabric you don't have to find two and a half it is two and a half and just cut your strips so it's a great one to have anytime you want to be able to do a project that uses two and a half inch strips and you want a really scrappy look and you're going to use your stash so it's a great option to have that all right once that's done our next step is to say what's my top whatever your top is that's where you are going to be including a loop if you want to have that now if you're thinking i'm never going to hang this up as long as i live don't even put the loop in and with the loop the pattern has this cutting this to two by four what i've found and i've cut one to two by four is that's what that is and i'll show you how to make it but i right away want to just suggest that if you think you're going to hang that up consider what that hook dimension is and if necessary make your strip two and a two by you know five or six this one's a two by six so if you have a hook that just has that kind of thicker well plastic or metal or whatever it is you might want to consider making that hanger longer if you like it hanging on the angle we'll show you where to put that on if you want it to hang in the middle you'll want to center that so now it hangs you know completely level or again not not even having a hanger at all if you anticipate you won't need that so if you're going to go ahead and include the hanger it's very straightforward and i'll get my iron heating up i should have had that going you'll just grab your fabric cutting it to whatever length you believe is correct for you cutting it two inches wide and just folding in half and my iron is not hot but we'll see what we can get here folding it in half but that's heating up very quickly and i like that folding it in half you see that crease there then you would fold in half again to the middle i'm just going to do that real quick the panasonic iron one of my favorite things about this iron by the way you've probably seen me using this more and more it's just the portability i don't have a cord dragging and bumping my project um i just love that and it also has a steam function so if i want to steam you know i can so there's just a lot of things in that and they're coming out with more and more colors there's a red there's a beautiful blue and there's a gold now i think there's even a rose gold it's so pretty so i just love i've got different irons i've got rowentas but you want a small little powerhouse definitely think about that one and the portability of it okay i'm sitting here talking about irons and i forgot to tell you what i'm doing just fold toward the center and then fold in half again and press now i've done that ahead of time as i showed you and you're just going to go ahead and stitch that closed now i just used white thread at the time of course go ahead and use your red if you're going to use red for your hanger you're just going to use one of your strips that's in your jingle pops if you're going to be using that or another strip roll and you'll cut that strip from two and a half down to two and then again the length that you prefer so you don't need to go grab another piece of fabric you can just use one of those strips for that purpose but again use the coordinating thread for whatever that hanger color will be this is my top you can say you know what i want to go ahead and i'm going to have it oh maybe an inch and a quarter over inch and a half over so all you need to do i find my center and i just fold it down like that that's all you need to do even if you just get the two edges lined up just like that on the bottom and then press that's how you make it just like that okay now this is the size that's included in the pattern the four and again i should have sewn that with a green but i wanted you to be able to see where my thread was that's why we sometimes don't sew in the coordinating thread because then you can't see it so i would absolutely grab a beautiful green now if you want to go ahead and include the hanger and that's where i say let's say i want that that's where i want my hanger and i want that to be like this go ahead and flip it over this is a little bit of a variation on the pattern by the way she gives you a little bit of a different option for the hanger so if you if you want yours to look like mine go ahead and follow these instructions and i'm just going to go ahead i just don't want to move like go to the sewing machine and again just doing a basting stitch i'm going to definitely shorten my stitch length and go over that a couple of times because you can imagine if you are going to actually hang this up again and again there's going to be tension there and you want to make sure that doesn't come undone lift that up i'm going to go over this a couple of times just back up there we go that hanger is not going anywhere that's going to stay right there for us okay so that's ready to go now on the opposite side of where your hanger is going to be we're going to go ahead and mark a six inch opening we're going to need to mark that and we're going to actually stitch that so i'm going to do a couple steps at once here so i'm just going to grab and i should have grabbed them i'm so used to having this be a light colored fabric let me see if i have a white a light colored marking it looks like i do have a light colored marking tool and i'm just going to mark six inches you want at least a six inch opening there's nothing critical about six inches you just want at least six inches and i'm just going to mark that and i'm going to sew a quarter of an inch now back to our normal quarter inch measurement just a straight stitch reinforcing the beginning and the end okay so i want to show you that now our next step i'm going to change my stitch from this opening here i shouldn't say opening from what i've stitched i'm going to now do a zigzag from where i just did the quarter inch the beginning and end and the whole idea here is to compress this foam down to as flat as possible because you'll see how important that is in the step following so i'm going to set my machine up for a zigzag in fact i think we can just do that together real quick nothing super complicated make sure i've got the right throat plate and i do that's something i want to if you're if you're showing on a bernina or any any machine some throat plates have just a single hole here and some have that wider so make sure you've got the right throat plate in there i'm going to just widen that out the whole idea now will be to do a zigzag no more don't go past this line it's everything in between here let's just do that zigzag real quick together i'm going to widen mine out here as i sew just a touch normally you'd want to just practice that on a scrap piece of fabric okay so that's what that's going to look like so far let me get a trimmed those threads trimmed now our other piece will come into play so let's go ahead and grab that we know we want to make sure that that hanger stays on the inside and again if we wanted to say okay that's going to be well you could change it up if you wanted you could have these be opposite so that when you flip it over let's do that let's make it fun we don't need to make them exactly so if they were the same it'd be like this i'm going to change it up so it's a little bit different on both sides that makes it really fun make sure that's inside we'll place them on top of each other just like that now you don't have the grabbiness right because that's been covered up now it's going to be very important to go ahead and clip so i want to make sure that's exactly where it's supposed to be and i'm actually going to clip this before i flip it over i'm going to sew this from the other side because i'm blind in these corners i can't see where that curve is so what that means is this is going to end up being on the bottom so that's why this flat part is going to be showing right now so i'm going to go ahead and clip that making sure everything is exactly where we want it okay so let's flip it over and let's have a look let's make sure everything is stacked if you see just a little bit of fabric you know it's poking out i just double checked that nothing shifted it's just that's just the nature of it right is we'll and we're going to go in just like we did before trimming any areas now let's flip this to this side where we can see now we'll go back to our standard quarter inch seam allowance and i'm going to start here at the opening and once again we're going to back stitch there come all the way around with a quarter inch and stop here and we're going to turn that through so let's go ahead so now i'm ready to go make sure you're off that zigzag stitch back to a straight stitch and we'll be stitching now a quarter of an inch definitely want to reinforce right there my favorite part okay we need to trim first then on my favorite part so just like before any fabric protruding in those corners you don't want that let's go ahead and get rid of that you know i'm excited about the camper style of this too because i know so you know camping has become so popular and you know you're of course you're working in a smaller space so it's really fun to be able to still bring a little bit of home with a you know cute little drying mat in your camper of course and now they call it what glamping i think that's the new that's the new trendy word okay so now that we're here my favorite part is getting to turn these projects through and you'll just push of course and i've got my clover point turner which is my go-to if you've seen any videos where i'm turning something through i you you know i have this on set with me because it's it's got these great features of both curves and points so no matter you know i've got these curves so i'm going to be using this end but if you have a sharp 90 degree turn then you'll be able to use the other point of that these products are made in japan they have just the best quality and i you know the clover wonder clips they're just the patchwork pins they really just even that that pin cushion is clover you know i've seen so many notions over the years and i can't i can't recommend the clover notions to you enough they really do solve problems and make things a lot easier and more fun okay so i've done what i can with my fingers but now i'm going to use that point turner the curved portion of the point turner to get those out this is so cute you can already see i mean that almost makes doing dishes fun right you get to be able to use your beautiful drying mat so here's what where we are so far and i like to give that a good press just don't don't be afraid to get right in there and give that a good press let me move that out here so you can see what i'm doing you can imagine if you wanted to end up quilting these in the very end you could just go to town and really just have a lot of fun with that as well we didn't do any top quilting on ours though so don't feel like that's something that you need to do okay so we have to close an opening now right do you remember that part where i did the zigzag that was the whole idea it's just to kind of compress that so that that turns down for us i would say of of the whole project this is the one step that just takes a little bit of extra effort and don't be afraid to steam that you might if you have something even my glasses got foggy with that one and we'll turn this down a quarter of an inch as well and press and the whole idea of course is just to close that side and you can't even tell which side had the opening now i'm going to flip that over so i can more easily see that quarter of an inch i'm going to try to get my head out of the way so you can see what i'm doing there i'm just visually i know that quarter inch well because i'm a quilter i know what that looks like if you're like i don't know about that quarter inch grab yourself a ruler you can check yourself and see where you are if you have any wonders about that okay once we have it let's go ahead and wonder clip that closed again we definitely want to do that and have nothing shift this is now when the coordinating thread comes into play because you will close this with an eighth inch stitch all the way around the top just like we did here all the way around so you really do want to think about what would be a nice thread and with this one because there's so many beautiful gold accents i went ahead and chose um a nice confetti i think that's kt400 don't quote me on that one it's a beautiful gold if you're using the silver you might want to choose a gray it looks like on this one we choose actually a black or a dark red i think this is a dark red so it's just time where you get to be able to use some pretty thread all right so let's go ahead and take that to the machine and we're going to sew an eighth of an inch all the way around i'll just start right before our closing here oh my gosh this is so cute this is amazing and you know we made this really it's it is gosh you know strip piecing i think i didn't even spend an hour doing that this is easily done in just a couple hours look how adorable this is it's just so practical it's fun to make it's fun to give so you know a tag a friend that you know would love to learn how to make this it's a super affordable project and of course with the beautiful jingle pops it makes it even more fun because you don't even have to cut those strips out or maybe another jelly roll that you have in mind all together so thank you for hanging in there with me i know it was a longer video but hopefully you had fun i'd love to hear from you leave me a comment like the video if you liked it and be sure to subscribe that way you never miss out on the video i'll see you next [Music] time you
