hi everyone i'm whitney from sugar and sparrow and today i'm showing you how to move a cake from your turntable onto a cake stand after you've spent a ton of time decorating your cake it can be so nerve-wracking to transfer it off of your turntable you don't want to mess up the cake finish or any of the details but moving the cake is so necessary whether you want to put the cake on display take some styled photos of it or move it to a box for delivery in hopes of saving you extra stress here is the method i use for transferring all of my cakes once they're decorated first i start with a chilled cake i always make sure that the cake is nice and chilled before attempting to move it that means it needs to have been in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer this way if you end up touching the cake finish you won't fingerprint it easily so once the cake is chilled i grab an angled spatula like this one by wilton which i'll link in the video description below and i heat it up under some hot water for a few seconds and then dry it thoroughly with a towel now that the spatula is warm i run it all along the bottom edge of the cake to release it from the turntable as you go around the seal between the buttercream frosted cake and the turntable will be completely released with a nice clean edge once you've gone around the entire cake work your spatula underneath and lift up one side this next part might freak you out but remember this is why it's important that the cake is chilled completely before moving it from the turntable with my spatula balancing one side of the cake i slide my hands underneath the cake and slowly move the whole thing to the stand it's essential that you have a cardboard cake circle underneath the cake for this to work so if you've never used one of those before be sure to watch my cake basics video on how to fill and stack a cake to see how to build a sturdy foundation for your layer cakes i'll link that video below i keep one edge of the cake lifted once it's on the stand and pivot the cake around where i want it then i slide my angled spatula back underneath and gently lower the cake edge before removing the spatula notice that i've got my finger covering the area above the spatula to prevent that buttercream finish from sliding off with the spatula now that the cake is on the stand i like to slightly reheat my spatula using the hot water method shown previously in this video and run it all around the bottom edge of the cake to press in any areas that look flared out or imperfect from the transfer [Music] see how perfect that looks this process will get even easier and you'll get way more confident the more you practice so what about cakes with sprinkles around the bottom edge these cakes are actually the easiest to transfer using this method you'll want to gently heat your spatula and then run it around the bottom edge just like we did with the previous cake slide the spatula underneath and then when it comes to balancing the cake you can very gently press the palm of your hand against the sprinkled edge and get an even better balance without messing up the cake finish as long as the cake has been chilled the sprinkled part of the cake finish should be extra firm and sturdy with all of the sprinkles staying put that makes for a super easy transfer to a cake stand and there you have it all my best tips for moving your cake onto a stand all while keeping it looking picture perfect if you want to learn more about cake baking and decorating be sure to follow along with this cake basics series and all of the fun cake decorating videos i release on my youtube page hit that subscribe button so you never miss a new one you can also head to my blog at sugarandsparrow.com for all of my favorite recipes baking tips cake decorating tutorials and so much more thanks for watching
