hello guys and welcome to another video in this week's video we are gonna talk about how to learn the Talmud this is a question that many of you have asked me in the commentary many of you have asked me what books should I use to learn the Talmud now let's start from the very beginning and I am gonna give you some very practical tips at the end of what books is out there to learn the Talmud and also what electronic sources is out there to learn the Talmud but first of all we gotta address the first question which is should you learn the Talmud now it is actually addressed in the Talmud where it says that if you are a new convert or baal-teshuva well someone that don't really know a lot about Judaism you are pretty fresh on your journey it states clearly that you should then not learn the Talmud but rather you should focus on the Torah Nevi'im and Ketuvim commonly known as that enough once you have finished it enough with its commentary and you feel I know it pretty well by now then you should start learning practical Aloha now I've addressed this in some of my other videos but some of the books that you could use to learn practical a lahar is the key to shul Honora o pinin Aloha there is many books out there where you can learn how to love your life as observant Orthodox Jew and it is clear from the Talmud that you should start with that enough ad basic a la carte now once you've already done that you think you know I know that enough pretty well I got the bicycle down Baruch Hashem in Judaism there is always what to learn more to learn so the learning never stops but you feel you had a good level with it enough and bicycle a hood then the next step is learning the Talmud now where does the tone would actually come from there is several verses in the Torah where it talks about the oral law and I will quote the verse for you below in full for your reading pleasure but basically at Mount Sinai the written law was given which we all know as the Torah but the oral law was also given side by side to the talk to the written Torah and what was basically given was Mishnah yacht now the Talmud is structured in a certain way it consists of Mishnah yacht which is in Hebrew then they is the Gemara the Kamala is in Aramaic which was the common tongue in Babylonia after the Jews were exiled and they basically spoke mainly Aramaic even in the Second Temple period Aramaic was the common tongue so the whole discussion in the Gemara is only rock in Aramaic so you've got the Mishnah yacht in Hebrew and then you've got the Kamala in Aramaic these are all in letters that looks like the olive bit so even though the Mishnah Mishnah yacht is clear it's in hebrew it's easy the gomorrah is an aramaic but still using the letters of the olive bit in hebrew then there is Russia Russia is by far one of the greatest commentaries on the Torah as well as the Talmud and you can find the Russia on the side this is in Russia script which is similar to Hebrew alphabet but also not the same at all tricky to explain but that is Russia script you also have to support on the other side now dosa foot is the grandsons of Russia Russia didn't have any boys he only had girls so these girls married rabbis some of these rabbis are mentioned in the support and also one of Russia's most famous grandsons is the rabbi Newton the rabona tongue strangely enough often attacks his grandfather Rashi in Tosa fault and that is also where all the fill and bite comes from where you will see some robotnik's and some hasidim wearing another pair of the felon on the head which is called rabbi Newton after Russia's grandson so that is the basic structure of the Talmud oh of a page a Duff of Talmud now add of a day or Duff yummy and which many of you might know where Orthodox Jews study one and half a day if you would were to study one death of Talmud a day you will finish the entire Talmud in seven and a half years and normally they have a mass of sium which they recently had barakah shame what a killer shame and that was all stadium fault with tears that have finished the entire chest when you finish the entire Talmud the Talmud is called the chess now the toll booth has many different sections in it dealing with different aspects of life from birth to death that is what the Talmud covers the whole life of an Orthodox Jew from when he's born told when he dies nothing is left out so that is just if you what is meant by tough Yomi is it is the front of the page and the back of the page one section of the page so the front of the page is called a mood normally I'm with Aleph and a mood bear bait so the front I love the back bed that's the basics of the Talmud so now that you feel you're ready to learn the Talmud let's go into some practical steps of how to learn the Talmud first question that comes up is what books should I use what book should I buy to learn the Talmud so the first book is depending on your Ebru level if your Ebru level and now remember also your Aramaic is very good then obviously should go for a liberal Talmud I have one year to show you guys this is one I bought in yeshiva so you Shiva you only study in Hebrew Hebrew and Aramaic with Rashi script which is tricky but it is well worth your while this is how it normally looks if you buy it from the shop Rocky Freight I'll show you a quick demonstration of what Duff looks like we'll start at the very beginning so that the Talmud that I chose to do this video is a bra hot which is the very first first book in the chest so he has a good illustration of how it looks so it starts off with the Mishnah and then I don't know if you can see that clearly it's a chemo and AM M that means Gamora starting and then the Gamora guys I mean you obviously have this is the site that I was talking about with Russia and Tosa fault and that is basically one a mode of Hebrew Talmud so that's the first one that is if you're Ebru and RMIT is at a very good level that is obviously in the book you should choose if you can you should learn this with Rabbi or with a Goethe the computer system has been around for generations it is where you and someone else at a similar level in learning then you sits opposite each other and discuss the points because the Mishnah gives you the outline of the Oral Law and in the Gemara which is several different rabbis from different time periods attacking the Mishnah so asking but why this why does it say that don't we learn from another source and it brings up a souk and it seems we learned from this source something else how can the how can the missional say such a thing and in this row our brings another pursuit and so it continues it's a very long debate there is different levels like I mentioned in the Talmud with a rabbis themselves with the Tana being the highest and you'll often see that in the Gemara where they will bring at the night source they will bring a Donna which carries the most weight there is something that carries more weight than a donna which is it's called a stun camera a stun source means it has no author no one knows you wrote it strangely enough the stomach Amara's have a very a much higher level and is normally the opinion that is followed in the Gemara another thing to point out is that you can actually learn know our heart from the Talmud none at all the Talmud just gives you the structure of how about a hot came into being and you have to be at a very high level to get any other hot from the Talmud and this is normally where the poor skin the people that deal with modern-day issues like lights on Shabbos electric cars this is where they get their information from to make up circle ha to make a new Aloha so that was the first book that's if you're a Hebrew at a good level now my Ebru is not at that level at all I do not have the time to go to haha Volta unfortunately so I'll tell you some of the books that I have purchased to learn the Talmud I'll tell you at the end what I currently do to learn the Talmud so the next book is from art scroll which is obviously very popular for any English speaker so this is the English Talmud it's all sobre hot now the Talmud have more books than the Koren series you'll see this little story there's the first book of rahat and this book has two there's two of them - my Finnish blowholes so the way that this looks design-wise for you to have a good look so you'll see the same page we're trying to keep it all similar yeah so it's got the the normal Duff all these elements the English Talbots will always have the e brew in otherwise it won't be a logically valid so it's got this year and on the side I'm not sure if you can see that on this camera but on the side you'll see these like a bar and this bar tells you what will be discussed on the English side so here's the English side starting with a Mishnah and then at the bottom there is very helpful commentary so notes on this what certain words mean it brings down raschi it brings down to support and it explains to explain it to you in an easy way so that is the odd scroll Talmud the next element that I use is the current series now the current series looks like this this is the back of the Koren according a slightly differently structured and this is the front so the way the colony structured is at the back we have the Duff this is bra hot and you'll see it's a very it's exactly the same you can't change this format he do change this format it's not a likely valid so no one will even try to do that but what makes this slightly different is that the current at the back has Nicki dot which is viralization which The Artful obviously does not have and which the coroner's you make it a bit easier for us people starting out converts and voltage you've obviously and then in the front of the Corrin it looks like this so it's bit different from the odd clothes also got yes the mission are being discussed and then you have note C on the side this is this is personality so it's I'm telling you about the rabbis that was mentioned within the section of the Talmud it's got some background information there and in here which I like the best this is actually giving you a lot that we do today based on the Duff that was discussed so that's obviously why I prefer the Koren the Koren is very popular in Modern Orthodox the Modern Orthodox stream dottie that Lumi national religious in Israel it's called where the odd scroll is the more Hardy book and it's the book earth has been around the longest both obviously being great books to learn the Talmud from I prefer that the coroner's are said just because the structure is better for me learning wise because I do like to know about the rabbi's mentioned in the Talmud their background personality you was this rabbi when he loved and they often discuss some details about his life practical a thought that we learn from this page because like I say the Talmud can be a very long discussion with you not really knowing what exactly is happening there especially if you don't learn with rabbi revolta the next book which I also study from is a little bit different it doesn't have the actual Duff of the Talmud so this book is mainly used as review book for your Shiva students or bothal excuse that learn Talmud and because it's a much quicker way to learn the entire Talmud and this is the car RT series Pinkas karate Mishnah this is what the book looks like this book and I've got the entire set Baruch Hashem which I bought from my previous shoe so thank you to fight with Raja Raja for giving me an excellent price on the whole car to sit and this is what the car T looks like since got the Mishnah enabler and then it's got the it's got a translated into English and then on the next page it has the discussion all in English which is very good and this is basically bringing down raschi and all the opinions of the rabbi's mentioned in the Gomorrah and it gives you a much quicker point by point structure to learn another great resource if you do not have the money for the Talmud to buy any books you know we're all living on tough economical times there is also Safari which is a free app free where you can learn you know the Talmud they use basically the odd scroll structure and that's a way you can learn the Talmud I personally cannot learn anything electronic it's just I like books you know how to open it learn something go back learn something else if because often they will bring you a source and I have a lot of books but a shame then I will check in the book that they they quote it or they they bring up a soup down from the the written Torah from the homage so to get the homage out and check it and then they'll bring a prophet down and the beam then I will check in I've got commentaries on Naveen oh like that ever look you know that's that's my style of studying I just makes it for me more rewarding because I like to go quite deep into a subject and not just the surface another great way of learning the Talmud which is one that I use the most is Gemara markings it is completely free it's online it's in audio it's given over by a rabbi discussing the Mishnah he does it in Hebrew obviously with a translation in English then he does the Gemara in aramaic and then translates it into english and then he brings you Rashi and to support to try to understand the Daath that you are learning now I have finished the entire bra hood which is the first book and I am Baruch Hashem very close to finishing the entire Shabbos which is I think 150 ieldofs and I am Baruch Hashem very close I am on Dolph 148 of Shabbos and that is basically how I learned the Talmud so what I do is every day when I Drive to work and I Drive back I travel a lot for work within Israel I Drive from Nana to beer sheva to Haifa which is north so I spent hours in a car die and I am currently doing about two doves a day and just for the amount of driving I'm doing now obviously learning the Talmud in audio is never as good as learning it from a book because you know you are driving so you are obviously not as focused as when you're sitting with a book in front of you and learning with the book in front of you never as good as learning at in a brutal system but you know it's better to to rather than listening to music or to the news or whatever I steal things out there to listen to while you're driving I find it better just to learn the Talmud while I'm driving so that's some very practical tips of how to learn the Talmud just to give a quick summary as I promised in the beginning of this video so first of all it is better to first if you are a new convert or if you are ball teshuva do not learn the Talmud learn that enough with commentary once you've got that down and practical daily on a hot so that you know a lot to live your life as an Orthodox Jew that's point number two then once you've got that enough down and you've got the bicycle ho down then you start learning the Talmud and if you are starting to learn the Talmud they several books as I've mentioned you can either get the Hebrew Talmud which is much cheaper but then your Ebru needs to be at a certain level as well as your Aramaic and you would need to be able to read and understand Rashi script as well as toe support so that's tricky for most of us if you have that level that's the cheapest and the best option if that doesn't work for you you want to do it in English then the base would be either the odd scroll Talmud Oh the current Talmud and I'll put links below if you already learning the Talmud and you want a book just for quick review then the karate series is by far the best and if you have very limited time to actually sit down with a book then there is obviously the electronic sources for when you have some time which you can get on safari ax which is a not safari our which is a free app oh you can get it through camara markings and I'll put links to all of that below I hope you found this video informative we should oh please God first finish that enough then bicycle hot and then we should go into the Talmud and just down into the great wisdom of the site as a fault we should all continue to learn and to grow to understand our shame and how he works and how he thinks and we'll never get there but we can at least try and in that why draw closer to our Kadosh Baruch and to a final redemption please God mushiya CERN Shibata [Music] [Music]
