hey naturals what's up Gabby here your American English teacher at go natural English have you ever noticed how some people seem to learn anything super fast like they open their English textbook and bam fluent they go to play soccer they set their foots on the field and boom they're like only the best player after five minutes on the field they just excel at anything they do now you might think that these people are geniuses you know maybe they're like smarter than everybody else but I disagree I actually think that these people that learn so fast are not necessarily smarter than anyone else is just that they've learned how to learn see this is the problem in a lot of our schools a lot of our classes we don't stop to take the time to learn about the learning process and this is something that I have learned as a teacher as someone who has a master's in education and loves learning about learning I did some research and I want to share it with you I want to share how the learning process works we're gonna go over that quickly and we're gonna break it down I'm gonna share four steps with you that you can use to learn anything fast but before you go to learn anything else before you open your textbook before you watch another video before you study again let's take a minute and learn how to learn because you're gonna learn faster and maximize your results alright first let's talk about the learning process and then let's talk about how to learn anything fast if I can share something personal one thing that you probably didn't know about me is that my father was a teacher for several years he tied at University and one thing that he told me about the learning process is that there's one model of the learning process with four steps first you are an unconscious in competence which means that you don't know and you're not able to do so at first you don't even know where to begin when you're a true beginner and you want to learn something you really need a guide a teacher a course in order to see the way it's like having a map it's like when you put in an address in your GPS and you know you want to go there you know you want to learn this thing you know you want to end up with this skill but you're not sure how to get there and that's why we all use GPS as these days but in terms of learning what we need is a course and so there's a site that I want to tell you about called Skillshare where I'm actually taking a course in design because I don't really know the first thing about design but I know it's important and I know I want to learn it so I want to tell you about Skillshare they're actually partnering with us and sponsoring this video Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of classes and design business technology and more subscription Skillshare is also very affordable Skillshare is a great place to learn new skills based on your interests or your professional career all right step 2 in that four-part learning process is that you are a conscious in competence that means that you're aware of what you cannot do so you know that there's all these skills within the subject that you're learning and you're not really able to do them yet so at this point you still need guidance you need to practice you need help step 3 is that you have conscious competence which means that you're aware that you are able to do the thing that you want to do so this feels good this is where you're succeeding at what you want to learn and you're able to do it step four is actually the ultimate step in learning where you are an unconscious competence which means that you're able to do this skill that you want to learn that you've already learned but you do won't even have to think about it because you're doing it intuitively it's natural you're a natural and you've mastered your craft earlier this year I read a couple of books about learning because I wanted to be able to share with you more about how to become a better learner in general for any topic one of those books was called the art of learning and in that book I'll boil it down into four steps of the learning process so step one is to learn the basics set a solid foundation and groundwork for yourself this is like where you're looking at the map and you see where you want to go so this might be for example when you sign up for an online course and you let the teacher show you where to go or you might do some research on your own to find out more about the subject and what areas you need to learn in order to get to where you want to be your learning goal whatever that may be the second step in the art of learning is to study one specific area of your subject intensely step three is to then move on and pick other specific areas of your subject and study them intensely and the fourth step is to cultivate intuition meaning that you've studied each area and the subject intensely enough so that you're comfortable with the subject enough that you can do it at that unconscious competent level that we talked about so you're unconsciously doing the thing really naturally you don't even have to think about it another book that I love what learning is called the first 20 hours by Josh Kaufman and he writes that the first stage of learning is to dedicate 20 hours to focused study this is called the cognitive stage where you have to think very hard you feel very awkward it feels like difficult work you're probably gonna have a headache and that's why it's called the cognitive stage next once you finally pass those first difficult 20 hours you go into the associative phase where you're practicing you're associating what you've learned with the real world you start trying out what you've learned to get feedback for example if you're learning a language you try a sentence to see how someone will react in the real world and well if they reacted this way when I said this how will they react if I say it differently and you notice how people react you notice the feedback that the world around you gives and you associate your actions with the world around you and the third stage of learning is autonomous this is where you are intuitively engaging in the skill and you're using it in the real world naturally this is actually where a lot of students plateau or stop learning because they feel like they've mastered their skill they've mastered their craft and they don't need to really study anymore but as someone learning a language or a sport or another subject you know that you really never stop learning there's always more to learn there's always more avenues to go down to explore a topic that you're passionate about let me share a personal example I love to dance and I'm really passionate specifically about Brazilian Samba dance I think there might be some Brazilians watching here so if you are leave a comments let me know you're here now for Samba I had to learn everything from zero because I didn't grow up dancing my family doesn't dance I didn't know any other kind of dance when I started dancing samba so I started from zero from the basics I had to understand the basics I had to put in those focused 20 hours probably more to be honest of learning in order to move on to the next stage then I started practicing more I started getting feedback I actually used some techniques that I'm going to share with you that helped me to learn a lot faster then I was able to pass on to the autonomous stage where I felt more natural dancing and I could put steps together without thinking so hard about it without counting out the steps and freestyling and so that follows exactly the steps of learning that we're just talking about now let's talk about how to learn any anything fast it could be a language it could be a sport it could be Samba dance it could be a topic like design web design user experience it could be anything really anything you want to learn so can I continue can I tell you four steps to break down how to learn anything fast let's do it first of all I highly recommend that you find a good guide whether it's a course a teacher a mentor a tutor a book find a guide because you need a resource to show you the way this is why we use maps this is why we need other people to help us to grow we can't just learn everything on our own because we need input we need guidance from outside of ourselves you need this for at least the first 20 hours of learning and I'm not talking 20 hours where you're checking your phone and Facebook I'm talking a focused 20 hours this is gonna be painful but it's gonna be so worth it step 2 you need to apply what you've learned maybe by copying your mentor by imitating your teacher and then apply that in the real world to your own life so I'm not encouraging you to plagiarize or copy someone else's work but when I say imitate or copy I mean to copy what you see your teacher doing and then alter it change it to your life to suit your needs experiment with what you're learning apply it in different ways get feedback in the real world that is where you're associating what you learn with your real life and the world outside of your course or your classroom or your book go deeper into specific areas of the subject that you're curious about and study them intensely maybe take a more upper level intermediate or advanced course within the subject that you're learning then you can apply that to the real world as well now to help you perfect your skills I have some really special advice first of all time yourself when I say 20 hours you might actually feel like you've studied a lot more than you have because it's very intense work these first 20 hours so actually time yourself and a method that I really enjoy it's called the Pomodoro method where you set your timer for 25 minutes and study intensely you turn your phone off you don't answer your phone text messages social media nothing you are absolutely tunnel vision on what you are learning only learning at this point only studying so 25 minutes of study and then five minutes of break time and then you can decide if you want to do another Pomodoro for another 25 minutes on and then five-minute break it depends on your schedule and how intensely you want to study so time yourself second record yourself this is so helpful no matter what you're learning when I was learning how to swim I actually knew how to swim a little bit as a kid I learned as a kid but then as an adult I wanted to learn how to swim better because I did a triathlon and I got coaching the first thing that we did is my coach walked alongside me outside the pool while I was swimming put his camera in the pool alongside me as I was swimming and recorded me swimming so we could see how badly I was swimming and then we could improve on my movements and really perfect my swimming stroke and that helped immensely because I could see my own movement I wasn't able to see myself swimming before that this helps so much with anything you're studying especially anything physical like sports or dance and especially with language so if you're learning a language record yourself and listen to yourself and you'll be able to see where your movements need improvement or hear where your pronunciation needs improvement and finally perhaps most importantly is you must find your motivation your unique personal motivation your reason you're learning and avoid any barrier that comes up to your motivation so really ask yourself why you want to learn something if you're just passionate about it that's enough of a reason but make sure you know why you're learning and then don't let anything come in your way don't let time come in your way make time in your schedule you might have to wake up a little earlier or stay up a little later or study during your lunch break but make time and time yourself focus on your learning goals together with other people who are also motivated learners you could find an accountability partner someone else who also wants to learn you could study together or simply check in with each other in fact when I was training for my last race I've found a running partner and we stayed accountable to each other checking in with each other really motivated me a lot on the days when I just didn't feel like running and there gonna be days that you don't feel like practicing that you don't feel like doing the work but in order to be successful in order to reach a level of mastery in order to be proud of yourself you have to do the work also along the way it's gonna be difficult try rewarding yourself when you reach little milestones for example you completed a 25-minute Pomodoro study session great give yourself a treat during your 5-minute break do something that you enjoy doing and finally don't let money be a barrier these days there's so much information online and so many courses that are accessible and as I mentioned you
