i'm going to show you how to lay wall tiles in a herringbone pattern the tools that we're going to acquire for the job will be cutting equipment safety equipment tiles glue spirit levels markers spaces for the tiles water sponge to mix the glue with and to wash the walls down herringbone is a different style of tile laying it can be done in the v or in a zed i'm going to show you how to do the v pattern the first step in laying tiles is finding a center point so we're going to do is measure the wall mark our center point and then we'll start laying from there for most diys it's going to be difficult to work out your cuts on a vertical surface especially in the herringbone pattern so i'm going to do i'm going to lay them out on the bench here as you can see i've laid some heavy duty cardboard onto this bench top just to protect it through this whole process so we've marked that center point i'm now going to reload that onto this horizontal surface here and it will line up with the vertical surface here as the center point now we're going to do is we're going to lay the tiles down onto the bench top here in the same way they will be laid here on the vertical surface using the section of your square there's a 45 degree angle on it place that against the wall and we've got the first 45 degree angle coming off the wall our first tile we want to have it sitting up high on the wall we have that point lined up with the center point here and we'll just work our way down each tile is laid at a 90 degree angle to the other we will always use our spacers that we're going to use in laying our tiles we're going to use it here on on the ground as well now that we've done this small section through here we're going to do our first cuts down the bottom and then we're going to glue that onto the wall i'm going to mark the line on the bottom tile i'll put the next tile through here spacers in and mark exactly where i want the cut to be i'll do the same with this tile here and this tile here as well once we've got that done we'll mix some glue up and we'll start sticking on the wall so now that we've got our first section laid and cut what i'm going to do is going to mark my center line on the very first tile so i'll start laying vertically from here and repeat the process across that way until it's completed there and then back this way a handy hint mark your tiles in the order you're going to lay them especially the very first ones here it's important to get these in the right place to start with because it will dictate how well the rest of the wall will look the very first tile so any cut edges always sand back to a nice smooth finish we're going to take away any imperfections so when it sits on the bench it sits on the bench true now that we've sanded off the edges we'll mix up some mastic and we'll apply that to the wall when we mix it up we're going to make sure it's a toothpaste consistency i'm not going to mix a big batch up here right now because we're just going to do a small section to start with and as we get rolling along the batches will get bigger okay we've mixed up our mastic we'll start applying that to the wall always hold your trowel at a 45 degree angle it'll give you consistency that way you don't get any highs or lows it's important you get rid of any excess glue off the bench top which allows the tile to sit properly that's our first tile this is the center point that we marked earlier and place that in there right on our center edge there a number two tile spacers it's a number three tile make sure they're bedded in nicely just give a bit of a wiggle in and i'll make sure the mastic moves behind it and covers all the air pockets now we'll continue up the wall with the full tiles so our first lot is in i'll continue laying full tiles until we get to a point where i have to start doing some intricate cutting powerpoint here the electrician's already made that safe that means we can operate there without any issues that's our next cut i need a little bit off this one so i'm going to use the angle grinder i'm going to leave this particular tile to later it's probably one of the most complicated cuts because the powerpoint but i'm going to ensure that i clear off all the old glue before it sets okay so we're going to do a cut down here first we need to measure we'll take the measurement from the corner of this tile to the bench top take one and a half mil off that and that's what our cut's going to be that one and a half mil is for our grout line and that's what these spaces are one and a half mil using my 45 on my set square line it up and draw it off a little squiggly line there means this is what i'm going to wait this is the part that i don't need okay we've cut it check the fit we make sure we sand the edges i'm going to put a bit of glue on the back of this i'll just make sure that i've got a full coverage at the back make sure it's nice and even and we'll pop it in place when measuring a tile cut much easier to come off a full tile edge and take it up to the joiner and from there you should be able to transpose it onto here a lot easier than trying to come down to here right it's time now to do our cut where our power point is so i'm going to do is i'm going to measure from the wall to the edge of the power point and from the wall to the other edge i'll write those down so i don't forget them i'll do the same on the vertical i'll dry fit this tile back into here and then i'll put those measurements onto that tile so we've drawn it out now i'll make sure i've got the lines marked i'll use my set square so that's the hole that we have to cut as you can see it goes right across here and almost right across there so i'm going to do is use a tile cutter i'll do a straight cut this way and a straight cut that way saving both of those pieces we can't hope that if we try to do a cut there unfortunately we'll lose that bit anyway so we'll sacrifice it now and we'll put it on back later that's the two pieces cut we'll use the angle grinder to take the rest out when cutting out holes like this i always cut them a little bit smaller than i need just in case if you don't take out too much you can't add it back i'll just check the fit looks pretty good so i'm going to do is i'll glue this in glue the other pieces in and around it finish up this section here and then continue on down to the right until we get to the pipes and i'll show you how to cut those sometimes when we get into this position here the tiles will actually sag a little bit so what i'm going to do is use a bit of masking tape just to hold them into position until they set that'll just help to hold it just in position there our next step here now is to measure and cut for our pipes i'm going to measure from the edge of the tile to the edge of the pipe and then to that side there i'll transfer that information onto the tiles there's the two marks for the start and the other edge of the pipe i'm going to draw a semi-circle here and that's our first cut so that's the first one we've probably got another two or three more to go so when i put the two tiles together you can see that's where the hole is going to be i'm going to use an angle grinder to cut those holes out but if you're not comfortable using an angle grinder a pair of nipples like this is just as easy tiles are cut and they fit well time to glue them up and put it in place now that we've got the difficult cuts out the way we'll continue on and finish the wall well that's the final piece in looks terrific we're going to give it 24 hours before we clean it down and regrout it and that's how we lay herringbone tile pattern [Music]
