brento very own tools on in today's episode we are building this solid walnut handrail with motion sensor LEDs if you want learn how to do it keep on watching let's start it okay so I've basically bought the biggest piece of 2x2 that could possibly actually purchase which is 12 feet long unfortunately it's not long enough from this span which is why we now need to actually increase it with another board using a having joint burn housing I don't know it's spelled this way I don't know how to pronounce it but that's we're gonna be doing right now let's get to it there's a number of different so you can actually create a helping joint you can use a table saw you can use a router I personally find that the chop saw especially if you have this type of chop saw is one of the easiest ways to go about it I first start out by figuring out the dead center point of the board and if you didn't know already there's actually a device on the side of my chop saw where you can actually set the depth that you personally want in order to cut the perfect depth between both boards are going to be gluing together now make thin even passes all the way across and you can just cut all this off with your saw however I find it easy where I can just make them a sixteenth or an eighth inch thick and then just break them off of my fingers now the tricky part is actually getting this whole area fully smooth out completely because you need it perfectly smooth in order to get a good even bond when applying your glue now the nice thing about the saw is that I can actually just pull the board one direction and let the saw take care of smoothing out the entire area now your joints never gonna look perfect with just a saab but all you have to do is take a rigid sanding block with a hundred grit sandpaper and sand off the remainder that way you can easily clean up that joint and it's time for gluing now the reason why we are doing a helvin joint is because a butt joint is not going to be strong enough for this type of application Elise in my opinion it's gonna have a lot of weight on a handrail and I don't want an issue with it breaking overtime especially with it being unsupportive at that location with a bracket now I have and joint is extremely strong because you're increasing the surface mass of where the glue is gonna be as well as the fact that both boards are supporting each other which just makes it even stronger of a joint now once the glue fully dries go ahead and sand the joint smooth and then once that's complete it's time to do a little routing now there are a number of different edge profiles you create with a router inevitably I found that a half inch roundover bit on the top and a quarter inch roundover a bit at the bottom was purpose type of application because if I want a beautiful buttery smooth finish on both the top and the bottom but I do have to be mindful of the fact that we have flat brackets they're going to be installing the bottom as well as LED lighting that has to have some type of flat surface to adhere to whoo sawdust is man glitter helpful life tip right I cannot wait to start assembling my desk collection system that I got from Rockler which will be done in the very near future which will come in quite handy because as you can see when ratting dust particles just go everywhere and I mean everywhere now after you have all that routed out and ready to go it's time for sanding and now I'm taking my random orbital sander and sanding from 100 grit all the way up to 220 on the ends I also take my quarter inch roundover bit and just round over that area just to smooth everything out to a perfect buttery texture Sani might not be my favorite portion of the project but inevitably it is so vital especially since this will be grabbed on a daily basis for the foreseeable future now I've picked up this nice little motion sensor LED pack on Amazon for 20 bucks and it was a perfect little gift because it was slim sleek it has these perfect LEDs with an adhesive back are already attached now the battery system only needs four triple-a batteries and you can also set how long you want it on for as well as how sensitive you want the motion sensor to be this maneuverable routing tables from Rockler and inevitably it actually did work out quite perfectly with this project because all I had to do is set it up and I can set it up anywhere especially when you're considering such a long span like this you need a lot of room and space to work and this setup worked quite perfectly I set up the routing fence in order to accommodate where I want the LEDs to place on the bottom side I'm also using a 3/8 inch straight bit in order to make a perfect channel on the bottom side of the handrail I then traced the battery pack on the top end of the handrail because I want the lights to turn on as you're going down the stairs which I feel is more important in a safety scenario just be careful when you're doing this and take off small amounts not a lot all at once because I did Nick the side due to the router getting a little squirrely just a little now after all the routers complete I then go back and actually take 220 grit sandpaper and using just my hands to sand over all the edges I do this as a final step because I feel I can get a perfectly smooth finish with your hands a little bit more than the sander itself especially on these odd angles after all the sanding is complete I then take some mineral spirits in some lint-free cloths and just wipe down the entire surface as much as possible after you let it dry I then take a cheese clock or a tack cloth and just remove all the remaining dust and debris that the mineral spirits left behind and trust me there will be some extras now also note that I do leave links in the description box below on where to actually purchase any of the tools or materials seen on this channel which always helped the channel so if you are interested please click those links below thank you you don't know this is one of my all-time favorite finishes this pharmacy satin finish which is oil and urethane mixture which gives you basically the beauty of an oil but the detection of a urethane so best of both worlds let's do it now use a foam brush to apply the product to the entire surface and generally I suggest adding it to the bottom of the railing and then flipping it over and adding it to the top this way you know for sure that you have a perfect finish on the top portion which will actually be seen now I do let the finish soak in for a couple minutes but you want to make sure you take some clean cloths quickly and remove the excess material if you don't they've finished its self Oh become very sticky and it'll be very difficult to remove so make sure you remove the excess within a five-minute span now I suggest applying at least two to three coats the entire surface allowing the product dry thoroughly for at least an hour prior to recoding and then once you apply your final coat I then take this buffing pad and buff a surface down vigorously and I do me a little vigorously making sure that you have all those nibs completely removed from the entire surface then I take my tack off wipe off the surface and then I take a clean lint-free cloth and apply a very thin amount of finish that's immediately removed let it dry once it's dry guess what it's time for LEDs but first before we install the LEDs you do got to sit back and actually appreciate how beautiful this railing really is turned out because the one thing about walnut especially with this finish it turns out extremely gorgeous and it lasts for years I apply some velcro with double sided sticky tape to the back side of the control module that way I'm able to remove it as well as install new batteries when they actually do eventually run out and then adhere the LEDs to the backside of the channel now check out our beautiful downstairs walkway with no handrail yeah I took it off years ago and now that I have a pregnant wife you gotta add some detection when you're going down the stairs so we are actually now gonna be assembling the bracket portion of this project a key portion when actually installing brackets is making sure you're hitting proper stud which is why I have this nice little stud finder and I'm going through the entire stairwell in order to make sure I know exactly where each stud is and that way I can space the brackets as evenly as possible while still hitting studs now the hair out should be approximately 34 to 36 inches up from the top of the stairwell now I'm placing the bottom of the handrail at 34 inches exactly and then from there I am able to take my level and account exactly where the edge of the stair lip is I do the same thing to the very last step and then I actually drill a screw into the top point and snap a string line in order to get an even mark all the way down now as long as we like our line it is time for hardware and we are using bold manufacturing hand wheel brackets and bold manufacturer was actually featured back on BYOD number 24 where I use their beautiful steel table legs for my walnut dining room table they have a plethora of different types of brackets as well as on miscellaneous other items that they also manufacture in Texas and they sent me an amazing little care package which I will also be featuring in an upcoming video as well now I found the easiest ways to align these brackets is making sure the top of your bracket is in line with your chalk line and applying one screw to both the top and the bottom brackets that way you're able to adjust the bracket slightly as you're installing the second screw on both brackets now I suggest pre drilling your holes both for their fasteners that are going into the studs as well as into your hand rail that way there's very little chance of splitting your wood and your have proper support overall but guess what after you have that taken care of and fully assemble the rest of your brackets you are done [Music] it's a project that truly came together between the beauty of the walnut as well as the structure ability of the brackets and the safety of the LEDs this is something that I'm truly proud to have in my own home and that's what I call one that beautiful sexy beast oh yeah sometimes I really do wish I had more than two aunts thank goodness for goof off
