[Music] g'day guys james here today in this video we're going to show you how to install a decorative plaster cornice what you'll see in the video is the installation method and some of the tools we use and then i'll come back and give you a final wrap-up all right hope you enjoy the video all right so the first thing we're gonna do i've got the plasterer here i'm just the apprentice for the day so he's gonna show us how to do the cornice the first step is basically get a couple of off cuts of your plaster cut them at a 45 and then you can mark out your internals and your externals so we'll chuck them up and you can see there a little close-up but just holding them together perfectly the 45 will give you your mark which will be 90 out from the top and 90 down from the [Music] bottom [Music] so the next step once you've got your marks in all the corners measure tight in between and then take off a couple of mil just to allow for your corners next step is to get a nail up in your mark and then you can flick a line between your two marks [Music] all right and then with a line flicked that's your mark that you put the bottom of the corners to the reason you flick the line is so that you've got a nice straight line because when your ceiling gets painted in the same color as your white with your cornice and then if your wall is a different color it just leaves a nice straight line just to finish the bottom of the corners too [Music] all right not only putting a screw on your miter mark it doesn't help with flicking the line at the start but later on if you leave that screw up when you put your corners up it helps to make sure you put the internally the corners into the existing motor some people use nails off ready screws because you make final adjustments with the screws afterwards if you need to so our first three pieces one one three millimeter two externals use a little symbol like that signify the external the next piece is a 580 with an external and an internal and i mark the corresponding internal or external angle and then the next one is the 3464 which is two internals now the reason i do that is so you can go through you can make your whole list of all your cuts for each room and not have to keep coming back to check what angle goes where this first piece of measured with two externals is a 113mm to accurately cut it without putting holding the tape and just guessing against this internal edge i just add the 10 mil and put it on the external at that bottom so i actually cut mark this to cut it at [Music] 123 oh [Music] now one thing to remember i guess if you're a newbie to this cornice or even if you're doing a carpentry work and you've got your miters you hear us refer to a long point or a short point and what that is the long point of the miter is obviously the furthest point and the short point is the shortest point but that will be determined by where you're taking it in the room getting a little bit technical but you'll see it when it goes up if it's rolled up and it's an internal that'll be your short point or if it's an external going out in a room you'll be sort of working more probably to the long point which you can probably still work to the short points but i'm probably confusing you confused myself but that's what it's referred to long point and short point depending on where you're taking it too if you're buttering it up out here it's all good but if you need to take it into the room always carry the cornice up on the side just because it's stronger on a sidewall if you try and carry it on the flat you'll hear it crack and it'll sort of break through the plaster so it's just safer to carry it on the edge [Applause] all right then up next once you've got them cut to size then it's getting ready to put the corner cement on so set up a little bit of a trestle and a something to set them on here and then we'll show you how they mix the cement butter it up and then get ready to take it into the rooms all right so now those are cut next step is to mix up the corner cement we've got the usg borel 60 you can get different um adhesives you can get i think a 45 and a 90 which just set a bit quicker or a bit slower but the 60s should do the job here so we'll mix this up put on the board [Music] so that's the first one cut and we've mudded and now we're going to put this up in place and just try and keep it up on the lines so you see here what uh benny's done is just put a a screw just to basically hold it in place just to lock it there you do that on the long runs as well where we've got the flick line you can put some little either nails or screws in along there and when you roll the corners up it sits on those screws and then you can just flatten it out push it into position just let a bit of the mud ooze out and that should just hold itself in position there and then you'll see later once we take these screws out wipe off the excess with the spatula and then the sponge but you probably give that about 20 minutes or so just to just for the corner cement to actually start taking and then you're good to go you can see there you just butter up the miters as well so that when the next piece comes in that's something that you [Music] [Music] [Music] final adjustments with the screws just to make sure it's on the line and just tight against the ceiling and the wall [Music] here on these longer lengths where it's not quite a full length then just cut those at three meters so you don't have a short little join in the corner so you got two sort of longer pieces of cornice joining together and you'll see over on this other side here we've done the same thing you've got the three meter piece coming back there and this is going to leave a small little return just in the corner measure that up after this one's glued in place [Music] see there just fill in the miters with the finger to cover up any holes just to make sure it's got complete corner cement right through and ben's coming back and just wiping all that off giving it a quick clean up in between the screws and we'll give that a sponge off a bit later when it comes to sponge off the corners you don't want the sponge too wet otherwise you just have water just run down all over the walls yeah too dry it's not going to break down the residual corner cement enough and when you do it you don't want to gouge out the corn cement that you want to to stay there and you also don't want to do it hard enough that the paper starts to break down and go fluffy because then the painters won't be too happy and usually at this point you can start taking any screws or nails or whatever you put on there to temporarily hold it and as you sponge over it it'll usually cover up the hole as well [Music] [Applause] okay so you can see now working around the room the last piece of cornice is left off gonna do the same thing down this long wall put a three meter or three six up here because this is quite long that goes down and then after that one's up then we can measure back and cut in that last little join there generally speaking i guess in a smaller room you might get away with getting all the corners up and screwed into position and then you take your screws out and wipe it all off in one go but being a bigger room i guess we're sort of doing it as we go just in case that corner cement starts to set easy to clean up [Music] [Music] now we're going to too much detail on the mitre box but basically there's some little grooves down the bottom here and depending on the size of your cornice whether you've got 50 70 or 90 you'll see it in these different grooves there's probably a heap of different youtube tutorials on how to use these so like i said i won't go too much into detail but with this cornice here there is an actual up and a down because it's got a decorative splay on it so we've got to make sure that when we're cutting it we're always cutting it as if the top is down here and then you can work out which side's your short point and which side is your long point cut so this one's going from i guess a short put from an internal to an external and this is where ben was saying before if you want to measure off that long point there you just add 10 millimeters to your measurement because it's really coming back that extra 10 millimeter thickness i don't over complicate it too much but that's how you measure it back so instead of being 11 23 11 33 line that up make sure it's locked into the the groove that is associated with your size cornice whether it's the 90 70 50. [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] all right there you go guys you got to see our decorative plaster being installed and they came up pretty good it's a nice little cornice that one with that decorative splay in it so very happy with how it's turned out now i'll put a link below to all the products that we used and all the tools so if you want to do something like this yourself you can see what you need i'll also put a link to the playlist at the end of this video for all our plasterboard shooting that's taking place on this project so you can see everything from the initial framing stage right through to sort of where we are now which is basically just sanding the walls and everything's finished up so if you've liked the video please give it a thumbs up guys and don't forget to subscribe if you're new hit that notification button up the top there if you want to stay up to date with all our latest videos and how-to tips and follow us along on our socials as well all right thanks guys i'll catch you next time cheers
