hey guys dr dex here today i want to talk to you a little bit about hanging ledger boards onto the side of a house that's what i'm doing right now i've got a couple different scenarios i wanted to share with you that information so if you like what you see don't forget to click that subscribe button and hit the bell icon if you want to be notified every time we're putting out fresh content for those of you that want to learn how to bend deck boards just like the pros don't forget to go visit and sign up for dr deck's master class okay so here we go so here's my first we're basically framing a little landing in here and we have a lot of different areas where we need to attach ledger boards to the house now ledger board can serve a couple different purposes usually your ledger board goes on and then you hang your joists from your ledger for various areas on your deck on this particular job we not only have the ledger which the the hanging ledger is going to go over here and that's where we're going to hang the joist from because the decking is going to run this way parallel with this wall over here okay so we're doing dexter dry waterproof gutter spline on the landing as well as the deck but we have to build the landing first so we can stack our upper deck onto the landing because this area is a step lower because of the garage area okay so what we're gonna do is we're gonna start hanging ledger boards on the house now two of the three parts of the house that i have to attach to are not considered the ledger they're actually joists but for all intensive purposes i can do the same techniques i'm going to use to hang a ledger and i'm going to hang these joists on the side of the wall and they kind of become like ledgers as well one of them i'm putting to elevation so i can figure out where my beam bracket needs to go as well so we'll get into that in a little bit but really what i'll show you is how we hang ledgers why we do what we do how we do it so on and so forth so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to do a layout now you're asking well how many fasteners do you need to put onto a ledger for your layout well that depends it depends on engineering there's some other factors one thing though i use all the time i use fast and master ledger locks to hang my ledgers we're using the three and five eighths length today because i've already done some research i know that behind where i'm hanging this there's an inch and a half board installed on this wall that i can attach to i've already verified i've already got solid attachment i'm not trying to hit studs i'm just trying to hit that two by behind the wall so to code requirement code requires you to go if you're gonna when you're hanging ledgers with why this specific length because you want to get through both boards and poke through just a little bit on the back side for shear strength usually on a brand new bucket of fafsa master they include a chart of how many fasteners you should put in your run how often to stagger them so on and so forth i'm gonna go a little more conservative today and i'm gonna put them every so often i'll show you where and why as we get into the layout which i'm about to do right now so we've got ourselves some three and five-eighths ledger locks we have our first treated board over here i'm gonna start laying that out all right so basically you want to be about three to four inches in from the end since this side of this board has a 45 degree angle i'm gonna come in four inches because i want to be about two and a half inches from the short point back okay so and also another code requirement they want you two inches down from the top of your ledger board and two inches up when you're putting in these fasteners so i'm gonna go ahead and lay my first two ledger locks at two and five and a half okay that's where they're gonna go it's pretty wet out today so you may not be able to see that very well those lines but once i see that then i'm gonna lay out this side and i got a big knot right here so i'm gonna come back four inches on this side as well so i can avoid this big ugly knot and this board i'm going to come down two inches and up two inches so i've got a double right here as well all right so we're using the old school style ledger locks today they have two different styles they have one with a 5 16 hex head and one with a t40 style bit they have their own proprietary bit though so uh we like them both but for now this is the ones we have these are the ones we're using all right so you don't have to pre-drill these i like to prep my ledgers before i install them that way i'm not fumbling with a bunch of fasteners i'm installing the board i can actually have them all installed now that i've got my two ends laid out i kind of check out and see where i'm at as far as distances now sometimes i may hang a ledger i might lay out the whole thing all the joists figure all that out and then i'll put all my fasteners in between the joist bays so the inspector can really get a good look at him and make sure that he likes what he sees but today this whole board's gonna be seen i'm going to just put in what i think i need and go from there i'm 49 and a half so if i want to put ledger locks every 12 inches one two three four feet i could do them every 12 and a half inches or i can stagger them every six inches and that would be sufficient so now that i know that i'm going to do this i'm going to go 12 and a half 25 and i might double check and go okay what's my distance here i got 24.5 inches so 12 and a quarter i'll put one at 12 and a quarter all right and then just for giggles i'll go ahead and drop a center one a double right here all right so there's my layout for my ledger now that i have my layout figured out now depending on the size of your ledger board you may be required to put more fasteners in you got to look at the chart that fafsa master provides or check with your engineer i've had decks where i've had to put them every six inches so it just depends every three inches sometimes if it's required so it depends on what you're doing and how many of these you're installing will determine how you put in your layout for your product now every four feet i usually double up no matter what so even if i'm staggering everything every four feet i double up or on this particular layout i just doubled up in the middle because i think it'll work just fine it'll look good and i'm into that so here we go i have my ledger i'm gonna bring it over here i'm gonna kind of set this up and prep it now i know that this siding is not low but i need about an inch a little over an inch i've got about an inch and a 16 below this trim board that's actually just about perfect for me i have a line drawn kind of where i think i need this board and usually i would just have somebody come over here and hold this for me but i'm going to go ahead and put one fastener in so here we go okay now i can double check level and make sure that i'm happy with the height of my ledger normally i mark the tops i usually don't mark the bottoms this is just a guide that got me from point a to point b because i already had elevation justified right here for the bottom of this board but i'm going to double check the top because that's what's really important and that looks pretty darn good i'm happy with that i'm going to go ahead and put in another one and i like to kind of get them flush you don't have to suck them super deep though into the material you don't have to go gung it in on them don't try to drive them through the board just get them nice and snug all right all right that looks really good so i'm happy with that so that's our first ledger board it's hung it's secured to the wall it's never coming off it'll last for a long time sitting up there like that and that is how you install a ledger board from there i can do my layout if i was running my joists this way i'd be able to lay them out 12 inches 14 16 inches on center whatever you're calling out for for your deck boards um so hey man if you like what you saw don't forget to click that subscribe button hit that bell icon every time you want to be notified we're putting out fresh content thanks for watching guys have a great day
