hey everyone jeff here also known as the revit kid a couple weeks ago i posted a video that showed how to import google maps into autodesk revit if you haven't checked it out be sure to check it out i mentioned in that video that i also have a workflow to bring the same google map um 3d mesh into twin motion and so today what i decided to do was show you a couple people emailed and commented and wanted to know about that so we're going to show you today so if you have not watched the original video um i suggest you watch it i'll put a link right here um at least watch the first 10 minutes that'll get you to the point where we're going to be in recap photo right now and then i'm just going to show you it's extremely easy once you're in recap photo to get your google map into um into twin motion however there's some things that i learned along the way that i'm going to teach you right now as far as the exporting and importing process so without further ado let's jump in so hopefully you went back and you watched that video if you haven't watched it yet of how to get to this point but just as as a reference for everyone here this is the google map uh that we have ripped uh basically made a um you know a 3d a 3d mesh out of in recap photo and so the processing has been done and this is essentially it and it's been scaled i think i mentioned in last video how to scale it and so it's ready to go so in the previous video getting it into revit i simply export it as a point cloud or an rcs file to get it into twin motion um just so you get a sense of what that looks like once it's there i'll zoom out a little here here's actually the exported mesh in twin motion which looks pretty awesome we're actually just going to use an fbx so pretty simple pretty straightforward there's just a couple settings that i want you to know about the fbx so how do you do it once you have your mesh we go over to export and you'll notice there's a couple options for export there's export model right here and there's a few options so if you go to quick export um if you pull down you see you do have fbx in here however i would suggest you go to advanced and select fbx in advanced for one reason and one reason only that is to make sure it does not rebake the textures this is going to create a larger file by not re-baking the textures but you will get a higher quality looking image in twin motion there's something that happens in the rebake where i just don't like the output and output in twin motion so we're going to go to advanced we're going to select fbx we're going to turn off rebake and we're going to set original so now it's doing an original size texture it's not re-baking them to any sort of resolution that we desire and and then that's pretty much it so now you can see it's the size i would leave as is don't change the size because we're doing original then you click export save that export somewhere i'm going to click save and we've had now now we're exporting and so now that we're exported uh we can jump back into twin motion and load in the fbx and i'll show you exactly what it looks like and how that process unfolds so if i jump over to twin motion what i'm gonna do is actually hide the uh the scene that i have in here and you'll notice these are actually all my revit and context images which i can show you exactly what that looks like in a second but i'm going to bring in that that texture right now so or that that fbx so i'm going to click import and twin motion i'm going to go find the file i'm going to leave everything as is if you want to mess with some material collapsing you can i wouldn't suggest it for now i just leave it as is click ok i'm going to say apply keep both because i already have this in there so it might sort of mess with things but i'm gonna click open and there you have it as you can see if i click here i'll move i'll i'll hide everything except for that i'll move it out of the way a little bit so you can see there's my exist so if i zoom in this is it this is that scan export as an fbx with textures pretty cool obviously when you get a little up close it's not the most attractive thing you've ever seen but for site context especially if you build your build your existing site or your your building itself within here it actually looks pretty good and just to show you an example of how how this can work if i jump over to my to my scene here you can see the existing parking lot right here that's actually a revit uh site model with with twin motion trees and cars and if i flip through it we've even got you know twin motion and revit stuff happening we have a construction fence we have all kinds of stuff and notice how the the the context around it you know is being built by this google map rib which is pretty cool and it does a really good job at starting to fool your mind between what what's real what's not and what what uh what is from the rip what is not from the rip and all that good stuff so pretty easy pretty simple right so once you go through the process of of recording and and exporting and all that stuff from the first video for the first 10 minutes make sure you do that once you get there and you have it in recap photo bring it into twin motion is super simple export as an fbx turn off rebake put it to original and then import your file and you're good to go you got yourself a nice textured 3d mesh in twin motion super powerful super cool i hope you like the examples feel free to comment subscribe to this channel and i'll talk to you guys soon
