How to identify a high quality engineered hardwood plank?

hello this is Terry from Greenpoint welcome back to our how-to series in our last video we are comparing a piece of solid wood flooring with the piece of high quality Castle bespoke engineered wood flooring in today's video we're going to be comparing engineered versus engineered so the question is are all engineered wood floors equal and the simple answer is no but I wanted to show you some of the key differences in a high quality engineered you see this thick wear layer of the solid wood supported by the Baltic birch the 11 ply Baltic birch backing in our comparison we're looking at a much thinner wear layer supported by some sort of a soft wood little strips I'll turn the sideways so you can see what's going on and inside this material see all these gaps and voids these create air pockets and inconsistencies in this product so when you're purchasing your wood floor the answer is that all engineered wood floors are definitely not equal look at the thickness of the wear layer that equates to the sanding life of your floor that's how many times it can be resounded I mean in this comparison this floor could be sanded possibly once with the comparison Castle bespoke floor this could be sanded as many times as a solid wood floor right down to that tongue and groove structure also look at the length structure of your engineered floor that you're looking to purchase with the castle bespoke eight inch wide planks it's a guaranteed 50 percent ten foot long planks in this comparison I don't have the exact length structure of this comparison brand but there's a it varies often they're somewhere between one foot long to up to six feet long so there's a broad difference in the length structure as well when you're purchasing your engineered wood floor look at thickness of where layer construction of core and length structure thank you again very much for watching
