hi everyone welcome back uh so in this video I'm going to make a little container ingrain uh container uh and you'll see a little simple lid that I'm going to make and how it opens and everything hopefully the the concept will work so we'll sort things out as we move along but this is the body of the container of the box and uh just between the center so I'll just round it over using the big continent spindle gou uh this is mahogany by the way so those are the corners off and now with the skew just make it nice cylinder and put on one side the [Music] Tenon a little rougher spot here okay that to gone and I can chew up the end grein here and put a little Tenon now actually I think this is uh too small for my bigger Chuck yep so I'll have to [Music] go down to the next size okay so that's blank true up I have the Tenon on now for the lid uh this is the lid blank this is maple uh for now I'm not going to do anything probably I'll just cut it on the band The Square and then we'll turn it but first I want to make the container our Jaws should run nice and true uh which it is uh only here on this end haven't chew it up yet [Music] [Music] oops just clean it up a little bit okay so now I can Hollow the container and I want a little staring hole and let's see I think I'll go up to the uh the handle [Music] here so that's the depth drilled out so I can now remove the bul of the timber here so again I'll use the spindle gouge um there is more in depth in my previous video on how to you how to back [Music] Hollow okay that's as far as it will go in so that's like almost like 40 mil wide um hole all the way well not all the way but let's measure it so that's 60 mil that's a little less than 2 and 1/2 in so now I can continue on uh using the scrape so this is the scraper I'll be using uh now this by accident turned out as a box scraper uh this one had originally a little like undercutter here uh like a bowl and I didn't have any use for it so I reg grind that away that ball and get to sort of a straight line um So eventually I'll get down to full wide uh full um width uh by the way this is 3/4 of an inch or 20 mil wide uh by 8 mil thick scraper and this is um carbon steel this is my pretty much uh Max diameter uh which is 3 in and um actually a little less than that uh so I leave a little Ridge like so and I need to have for that flange maybe something like this from the lid to sit on and now I can Hollow all this away and I'll Hollow it at an angle so it gets wider as I uh come to the bottom so I use pretty much all of the the blank so the rest goes up so the way I'm going to use this scraper it will go I will grab it here by the feral and the rest of the handle goes underneath my elbow and um I'll be using uh the point of the scraper uh and the rest is high enough so only this portion the point and this portion will be in contact with the wood and I can get nice straight line without the wood um sort of uh push the the scraper away which can happen if we have something like a negative rig scraper uh because the point of contact is in the middle of the blade and it in the curve like this uh diameter on the inside it wants to push the scraper out of let's say your perfect uh straight line in that makes sense and we just start this off we just start this off nice and easy [Music] so now what I've done actually boarded I continue on um through that uh depth hole that I've done done so I just push the the scraper in so I relieve a little bit more wood so now I can start to I feel of you see that that's the the reach inside and I feel that and I want to continue from that point deeper in the handle is uh close to my body I'm lean on on top of the handle with my elbow and uh so I have a lot of weight on top of the handle okay let's see how that's working okay that's looking quite good now the depth currently is 90 mil so that's 3 and 1/2 in so I still have well I don't have much to go so maybe 15 mil something like that so now I can start to think about the final uh side shape and um this goes quite fast so and the timber is working quite nice which is always a good thing now I don't want to make the sides really thin uh because I still want to get a little shape on the inside now the shape on the outside um is going to be relatively simple just maybe a nice shallow Cove or something like that uh because the wood is quite shat and everything the the wood itself is quite busy so it doesn't have to be anything like uh crazy KY on the outside so but what I'll do now is just go down to the final depth uh which is actually somewhere around here and I I don't have the magnet on so I'll put a marker line and that wears off quite quickly again I'm stepping out from the middle to rest up a little [Music] more [Music] [Music] nice smooth okay that should be it okay let's see how this now looks there we go okay so the bottom of the the container looks quite good everything is cut nice and clean and the sides look uh pretty pretty good so I'm happy with that and then now I can continue on working here on the uh Rim what I want to do in terms of the lid here is is now I maybe I didn't leave myself too much room here uh but I'll see how it goes um so what I want to do is have the flange here that will rest the the lid uh sort of at an angle towards uh here so here on the on the outside diameter uh will be deeper than here and what it does is I'll be able to press on that uh lower part here and raise the the lid so that's at least the theory so let's see how it goes so the lid uh will be thin uh nice and thin [Music] light and now just make this nice and smooth I might even curve it a little bit maybe that will help out with if I press it here so it uh lifts there I hope this will work maybe I haven't Leave myself maybe I should left a little bit more of a a ridge here let's [Music] see and using the bevel side just chamfer this a little bit I can Cher actually this as [Music] well so if I place the ruler here you can see there is a bit a lot of movement here so it's not uh this uh Rim here the flange is not uh Square so that will I hope allow me when I press it here uh to lift this end up I have this piece of stick and a little Rod here for deeper stuff as well uh this is a from the Ben saww now um cloth B sandpaper works better for this CU it's more flyable this is paperback it's not as relable and I always bend it at the end so I can sand the ingrain as well the bottom and the rim here I'll stand by hand after so everything looks super nice uh here on the rim as well so the inside and the rim here is sanded ready for the oil and uh now all I have to do now is find where my lowest spot is I think I have a little sort of a dome on the on the bottom which is okay so I'll take the measurement here and transfer that to the outside so I know where the bottom is exactly so that's the bottom of my container so I can shape now the outside a little bit so I can mark that so I just know where I am what I want to do with the design and here on the middle I have around 10 mil maybe a little bit thicker so I know what I can do in terms of the shape and like I said I just want a nice simple maybe big Coe so this will be rough roughly the middle so I'll use the [Music] skew now this is my inside but I'll probably finish the box I can put it a little bit more weight actually I can use all of basically all of this here so just left for the chewing up here so I'll adjust accordingly so this will be now the the middle nice and easy watch what happens on the horizon so just give it a little curve so it's not flat a little bit more here and on this side as well okay I'm happy with this this will be when the oil comes on pretty lovely stuff just to see if there's any hidden surprises in terms of grain pull out and yeah there is uh here uh just nasty pull out the top portion is okay here a little bit more so I have to deal with this first before sanding uh and now I'm getting a little thinner just double check how I am thick in the middle oh I still have plenty of Timber so I can put a little bit more curb to it [Music] [Music] a okay so that's nicely blend see if I remove that tear out here what'll have to do differently so still a little here and here this side is okay but this side doesn't want to cooperate so what I'll do uh for this stubborn bottom is I'm going to use the the skew not in peeling mode so the handle is really low so somewhere between straight in and the peeling so it's sort of a low peel as Richard likes to mention it and just go lightly curved skew here really helps I did get a few questions on a skew video tutorial that I did how to deal with a stubborn grain like this so this is the good opportunity so the bottom portion here is all done but I still have hope you can see it a chip out here here and here so I'll have to finesse it a little bit more now since I'm doing already this I'll just finesse the bottom of the top [Music] here let's see now yeah yeah everything is gone super nice so now I can sand the sides here and I can impl the finish all the way to the bottom here so I can start sanding with uh 240 great I'm going to use this one from Steiner uh regular oil and we'll apply that and on top of that we'll put a natural beeswax lovely color and chance in in this mahogany and this oil will bring that out quite nicely and for the lid since it's Maple I'm probably going to use the white oil that they send me so it keeps as light as possible so always I first get the oil in nooks and crannies like this and now we can saturate the inside the box is still a little warm form so apply the wax I'll melt melt the wax here at the opening so I can start to melt it and squeeze it all the way down for a I'll do the outside generate some heat and push it down now that's as far as I can reach so you can see now a little closeup really nice finish and the inside as well the sides the rim here so everything looks okay so I'll put this aside let it cool down so the wax uh sort of solidifies let's say uh and I'll start working on the on the lid so I have the bigger Chuck here and this is the blank for the for the lid so this just goes for now like so in the truck so now I can use the shear scraper just to Flat flatten the the bottom here so I need the measurement this is from the base diameter which I need I can set it [Music] in let's see now okay a little tight but that that will be okay for now so this measurement is when I close my smaller cut the outside diameter so I can grip uh this a little thing and flip it around here a small square and scraper make a little decoration with this peel I just under cut it slightly like so you can see that's really tiny Ridge which I'll expand and grab which will be okay uh just to finish this on the outside finish the bottom of the of the lid and I'll use this white oil it's this one again from steinard uh company but it doesn't yellow as nearly as much as the IR regular O So now usually you would let this um dry and then apply regular oil on [Music] top however what I'm going to do is just curious to see how it will behave in terms of color when I apply the WX looks okay Jaws into this little Ridge that I have here this is small piece of Timber so it doesn't have to be any bigger Ridge than this so just lightly expand and you have to have a nice crisp dove tail on your jaws and that's holding quite nice so first what I want to do is remove the corners I use spindle gouge I'm taking light light Cuts want to be too aggressive okay so I'm quite near the set diameter from the other side so what I'll do is go from this side now nice and easy easy make sure there is a little Rich [Music] here so I'll test the fit now before finishing the top so this now fits actually quite snug inside uh it's sealed all the way down but uh once we sand it it should be okay I hope let's see so now what I need is a measurement here so where the base is so we'll put a little pencil Mark here so I want to be pretty flush here and then make a d or something we'll see so that's that that now I can pretty much do from this line here to the center what I want to do uh now again uh this lid is without a knob it will have that press fit here which will then pop the other side hopefully uh this is a first for me as well so I this is spin go so I want nice thin lid you can make actually a little detail here and think a little OG should be quite interesting here just a little [Music] they get the r into a corner to get the wax [Music] out that looks super nice and this quite happy with that so I have the base on a gem truck uh so I can remove the tanon here always undercut it slightly so it sits on the r here oh actually I forgot to chamel this a little bit so it's not [Music] sharp put a little decoration like so and I can now send the bottom and finish it this is now the final product you can see the lovely green and CH and figure in this mAh Agony uh contrast with the Maple and uh the bottom is finished as well nicely and now the idea for opening this thing is you just like push uh here with your thumb and it you can see here it lifts this part here so you can grab it now and open it now uh it's not most convenient obviously the way of opening the container but it's sort of a you know minimal design so kind of goes with it with that and U maybe a little wider flange would be a little better uh maybe easier to press down and also if I remove this Ridge here a little bit lower down then uh I think should be a little easier to squeeze it or at least more it's again sufficient to open it and and uh now as you you can see you can do it on the on the on the table as well so it works but just has to be a little like tweak in design but overall quite happy with how it turned out and lovely the lovely contrast and this mahogan is really really nice so uh thank you for watching and hope you like this video and uh see you in the next one
