hi I'm Zack bow from up your fashion game after my video on how to tailor a shirt I got quite a few requests for a video on how to tailor pants so this week I'm going to show you how to hem dress pants let's get started so when you haven't dress pants you can't see the stitching at the bottom of the pant leg this is different for more casual pants where the stitching is visible like on jeans I will do a video on how to do this in the future start with a pair of pants that are too long for you in my case that's these gray dress pants I've already done the right leg to show you what we're going for what you want to do is fold the pant leg inside until it's the length you're going for make sure you're standing up straight when you look at the length if you have someone to help you great but it's still possible to do yourself when you have the length that you want use some pins to hold it in place if you're doing your second leg like mine you don't need to repin the second one you just need to lay the pants flat and make sure they're the same length now take your pants off and turn them inside out now grab your iron we're going to make a new crease now we have our new crease unfold the pants all the way this is what an unhappy pant looks like this lower crease is from the original hem line and as higher crease is from my new hemline the distance between these two is perfect so I'm going to use that to my advantage I'm going to cut off this extra fabric right before the old hem line so it will fold under neatly with my new hem if that doesn't work out for you you can just iron a new about 1/4 inch fold at the end of your cut pant leg so I'm going to do that now once you've cut off the extra fabric fold the pants back to your hem crease now we're ready to sew using thread that's the same color as your pants cut about 24 inches off it's better to have too much than too little then tie about 3 knots on top of each other at the other end that way it won't go through the fabric now comes the magic what we're going to do here is have a visible stitch on the inside of the leg we'll have the needle only catch a couple of threads on the outside before you bring it back in watch closely I like to start at the midpoint of the leg and way you can catch these little flaps so I'm going to go in catch the flap and come out now we've caught the knot we'll go maybe a centimeter over do the same thing and come back out now we're on the regular part of the pant this part will be visible so I go through the hem and then barely catch maybe two threads or so on the outside and pull that through you need to be careful not to pull too hard you want this to be a loose stitch otherwise you'll get puckering on the outside so again about a centimeter over go through the cuff and catch one two thread I like highlight two threads one might not be enough so that remember very loose the less threads that you catch the less visible that it's going to be on the outside so do this all the way around and then tie it off when you get all the way around the leg once you finish your sewing turn your pants right-side out and give it a good ironing both sides and then remember to put the center crease back into your pants you after doing both legs here's the final product put on your hands pants and enjoy again I'm Zack pile from up your fashion game if you enjoyed this or have any questions please check out my site at up your fashion game wordpress.com and leave a comment thanks for watching
