How to Halter a Horse (properly tie a rope halter)

I'm ready to spend time with my horse Luna join me as I show you how to catch and halter a [Music] horse there are two main types of halters flat nylon or leather halters that look like this and rope halters that look like this today we're going to be using both When approaching the horse I make sure that my halter is in my left hand held by the noseband and my lead rope is in my right hand I calmly approach the left side of the horse's shoulder and throw my lead rope up over the back I'm going to stand on the left side of her hook the nose like this I'm going to pass the long part up over her pole behind her ears get it working up on her nose and clip it at this point most horses believe that they're caught this horse is a little bit harder to catch so I might have to just keep a hand on the outside of her just to make sure then I'm going to take my nose band of my halter with the excess pointing back toward my belly and I'm going to hook the nose like this then I'm going to hand myself the long part of the halter on the right hand side bring it over just behind the pole and tighten it up when fastening a rope halter you're going to take the the excess part put it through the loop here and bring it nice and tight making sure it's not too loose on the horse's um chin down here I'm going to hold the loop tight and make the letter d with that excess then I'm going to take the end pass it through the loop and pull the tail to the tail so it looks like this you want to make sure that you don't bring the end up and tie it around itself up here you want to make sure that it's down around the loop and you pull the tail to the tail and not toward the face when I'm finished working with my horse it's time to put them back in their pen and we always want to take the halter off as you can see most of our horses are pretty easy to catch but if you're having a hard time catching your horse we're going to make a video for that and it's titled how to catch a hard to catch horse
