wheatgrass the detoxifying immune boosting natural cleansing tonic and living agent used worldwide to fortify your health and enhance your well-being wheatgrass is a superfood made from juicing the leaves of the common wheat plant available in capsule powder liquid or fresh forms wheat grass's popularity is only superseded by its price fortunately the seeds are really inexpensive and growing your own is a piece of cake it's a four-step process from seed to harvest that'll have you bursting with unlimited wheatgrass in just 10 to 14 days so let's get to it [Music] as we mentioned wheatgrass is simply the sprouted seed of the common wheat plant the seeds are available at most health food stores as well as online and are quite inexpensive for how much wheatgrass they can grow to get started we're going to need four things a container organic potting mix water and the seeds themselves the whole process from seed right to harvest is less than 14 days so let's get started of the four steps to growing your own wheatgrass at home steps one and three are the most critical for step one we need to soak our seeds for 24 to 32 hours rinsing every 8 hours the goal here is to loosen the seed coats to prep the seeds for their germination however the seeds cannot simply sit in the water for those 24 to 32 hours you have to rinse those seeds every 8 hours or they will ferment and die this is the key and it will directly affect your germination rates to reiterate and put emphasis on the point you must rinse the seeds and give them fresh water at this stage every eight hours while the seeds are soaking let's prepare our trays or containers wheatgrass can grow in just about anything and unlike typical plants and crops we don't have to worry about drainage which means we don't have to use traditional pots and containers as this is a 10-day crop with maybe a single watering at the later stages of growth we don't have to worry about drainage holes so we can use anything from cups mugs deli containers even those 10 20 nursery trays if you want to grow large amounts two inches deep is all that's required so my suggestion is to use small deli cups such as these ones here to grow your first couple of crops in that way you can get familiar with the process without wasting too many seeds and without wasting too much soil next up we need to choose our soil this part is just as easy any organic potting mix will do commercial options at just a few dollars per bag are perfectly fine fill your container of choice about 90 full making it nice and level that's all the prep that's needed and after 24 to 32 hours of soaking we're now ready to plant give your seeds one final rinse and strain and step one is successfully behind us you may notice the wheatgrass seeds already starting to sprout here don't worry that's completely normal on the flip side if your seeds haven't sprouted also don't worry they will soon for planting unlike regular seeds we don't want to bury the wheatgrass we're simply going to place the seeds right on the surface of the soil make sure that all the soil is covered leaving none of it exposed but try not to pile the seeds too high on top of each other about two layers maximum cover the tops of those containers so they don't dry out and this brings us to the most crucial step this is where most wheatgrass crops are gonna fail if it's not done carefully there is about a two to four day critical window where the wheatgrass seeds are germinating fully exposed trying to root themselves until that initial taproot can actually find the soil the seed still has the possibility of drying out and dying this is why we cover those seeds after planting once that root finds the soil you know the plant becomes essentially bulletproof but until then just know that the success of the crop rests on this one important step for me to ensure success i simply miss my seeds one to two times a day during that two-day window this is more than enough to keep those new roots fresh and moist and soon enough they're gonna find their way into the soil and the crop will be on its way within three to four days after planting greenish white roots start to appear they grow really fast at this point so remove those container covers after this we have about a week or less until the crop is fully grown once the shoots really get going the blades are going to transpire a bit more so this is where you might need to water usually around days 7 8 and 9 is the best time to do that wheatgrass is a very low maintenance crop not just with the simplicity of watering once but also with its light requirements yes sunshine and full spectrum light will give you bigger more lush blades but wheatgrass grows just fine with indirect or the ambient light in your house if you're not making money from wheatgrass don't bother with fancy expensive light setups for maybe a 10 percent gain in harvest yield after 10 to 12 days your wheatgrass will be about 8 to 12 inches tall and ready for harvest you can cut and harvest at any time but it's when wheatgrass has grown this large and begin what is known as the jointing stage that it is the most nutritious simply cut the grass down about an inch above the soil level it's as easy as that most likely your wheatgrass crops will continue to grow giving you a second crop in another five to seven days amazing now wheatgrass can't be consumed whole we lack the ability to digest the cellulose and the fiber most wheatgrass is juiced consumed in smoothies with fruit juice or for the brave straight up wheatgrass is an amazing plant that unfortunately became really popular really fast which is reflected in its price fortunately as we've seen here today it's extremely easy to grow your own so that you can always have a fresh source available for pennies a dose hey if you have any other wheatgrass growing tips make sure to share it with the community in the comments down below also if any of you
