well good morning friends today we're gonna learn how to grow some napa cabbage and we're gonna do it in five gallon buckets I'll be right back after the break well welcome back I know for you kimchi lovers that love kimchi napa cabbage is like the main ingredient for making us some really really delicious kimchi and Nancy sure loves it so we wanted to share with you on how to grow this on a 5-gallon buckets just in case you wanted to grow some for yourself but you just don't have enough room in your garden you know you don't have a large bed so this can be done in five gallon buckets so let me get these seeds in the starter and get them started I got this from Johnny seed calm and I'm using a variety called Rubicon Rubicon that's the green Chinese cabbage napa cabbage so let me get it started so we can get it in the rack and get them going okay here's how I start all of my seeds from I use a 1020 start and tray and I like to use the ones with the drain holes because I start my seeds outdoors so I don't have a problem with the drainage of the water seeping through and getting anything wet on the inside of my house or the inside of an indoor container seed starting container because I do all my seed starting outside so I like to have the drain holes in mine because I want to keep my cuts I want the water to fall completely through my cups and and let me add water as needed instead of them standing in water for too long of a period of time which rots my seeds okay so that's hot that's why I use the 10/22 drain tray then I use my cups my seed starting cups I like to use the ones that have a you know at least a two to three inch deep cell because I want to get a good root system through here before I try to push pull down to our little seedling out of there next thing I do is I add my seed starting mix and I make my own seed starting base so if you want to learn how to make this stuff at home you can we have a video on our channel that explains how to do that and demonstrates it pretty clear or you can if you only have one or two trays to do then just simply go buy some seed starting mix at your local nursery for me I have many many seeds trays that I need to start so it's more economical for me to make my own seed starting mix okay so next thing I do is I used to mix now fill up my tray my seeds seed starting cells once I have it good and leveled off like this then I come back through here and I mash in all of these seeds cells I'm actually been good and tight use your fingers push them down in there because this thing is just full air and if you have air inside these cells when you're trying to start your seeds they're not going to germinate you know you just wasted your money and your time and very disappointing so you want to keep these things good and tight when you get ready to start so push them down good once I have them down packed in there pretty tight the next thing I do is I pre-moistened some people pre-moistened their soil before they put it in but I've always found it easier to do it like this so you can do it either way you want it's up to you now that I got it tight I pre-moistened each cell by flooding it a little bit okay let that soak down just for a few seconds you see it just gobbles up that moisture it's so dry once I got it where I don't see the water standing anymore then I temp down the track now it's really good and tight and it's moist I'm gonna use some spinach seeds here for this demonstration simply because the seeds are nice and big and you can see them on the camera here's the seeds now what I like to do is I like to put two to three seeds in each cell I'll let those seeds germinate and ask the seedlings get up mature a little bit bigger we're interest at all I'll come well in with a pair of scissors and snip off you know the weakest looking seedlings and keep the best one so I thin it down to where I have one seedling for each tray so let's start out by putting a couple seeds and each one of these cells and I try to make sure I get them kind of close to the middle of the cell because if you don't they run out to the end you know to the edge of the cup and I just don't like them to grow down the edge of the cup okay after I get the seeds in the cups when I come back and I add in some more soil and level that back off again to where you got right out about a quarter of an inch of soil on top of those seeds and right now this looks like I got more in a quarter inch but keep in mind it's full of air so once I get it in there again I mash it down a little bit hit it with a little bit of water you'll see it sink down some more so I'm getting to that quarter-inch that magic quarter-inch mark I'm looking for up soil over the top of the seed you don't have to add very much water that time and again I tamp it down and the last thing I like to do is always put a tag in my seed trays I like to write down what that seed is what that tray is and what date that I planted it okay then I stick it right into the corner here and one of the selves and that tray is ready to go to the seed starting rack and germinate okay we've got our seeds in the seed starting trays got them a little tag on here let's get them in the seed rack so we can get them started okay we're off and running with our napa cabbage stick with us we'll be back in as soon as these germinate and get to growing and hardening off and we'll take it to the next step together where see you soon well our rubicon napa cabbage has been in the seed starting rack for about two weeks really having a hard time doesn't look like I'm gonna make it and let's take a look at where we're at and disappointing as it is it is what it is let's check this out together looks like we got a really poor germination rate I've only see one two three four five of them and six of them maybe and they don't look like they're gonna make it at all so this might be a bust that happens sometimes so what we'll do is we'll try this again in the spring and see if we can do a little better so it is what it is you're not always 100% so sometimes we experience failure but there has been a very hot season here toward the end of the summer here in Florida so we've got a difficult time with these seedlings so let's try it again and we'll keep our eye on it and maybe it'll pull through but it doesn't look too promising at this point so we'll see what we can do with it let's check back with it in about a week well our Rubicon napa cabbage are doing pretty good I've had them out here on the hardening table for the last three or four days and I think they're ready to go ahead and get started into some five-gallon buckets so we can get that process started so let's go get some can some buckets out of the container storage area out there and come on up here use some of my my homemade container mix and we'll get these things off and running and we'll get them over into to grow racks over in the container garden so let's get started okay I mixed up some homemade container mix that I used to start my containers with if you want to make some of this container mix for yourself at home we've got a little video on our channel you can go take a look at it it'll show you how to make this stuff it's pretty easy to make and it really comes in handy if you're doing a lot of buckets so Nancy will put a link of that video up on our channel and go check it out and you might want to do some one out for yourself on my five gallon buckets I always drill some 3/4 inch holes in the bottom in this case I've got six holes in there that's what you want to do drill some holes on my even pattern so that you get good drainage on your containers because if you don't if you don't have adequate drainage you're just going to root rot your plants make sure you drill them holes okay I got all the buckets filled up with my container mix next step is I'm going to add a big heavy dose of blood meal to boost the nitrogen because it's napa cabbage I want a lot of foliage growth on it so I put a full handful like that at least a handful I'll put it right on top of each of the buckets and then I'm going to water it in I want the flood these buckets so that it can allow it to soak down and pre-moistened all that soil all the way down to the bottom of the bucket before I plant my plants in here so this is my next step as the water men and let them soak okay I got my 15 buckets soaked I'm gonna let them sit here and soak for about 15 minutes then we'll take it to the next step see you in 15 okay our pots are soaked down pretty good next step is I'm going to add some more dry container soil that I just mixed up and fill up till I'm about two inches from the top so I just take some soil and get it right about there then I'm going to take my hand and dig hole I usually make that hole about the length of my fingers about four inches deep then I take some more blood mill another handful and I put it right in that hole then I take one of these beautiful Napa cabbages see if I can get it out of the cup I put it right down in that hole see and I collapse the sides around it now pack it in pretty tight okay that one's ready to go over to the growth table and be watered in again you will see one more let me do another one for you [Music] okay got me another bucket fill it up with some soil to about to it and it's in half two inches from the top push a hole right in the middle with my fingers a little scoop of blood meal get a seedling get it right in the hole collapse the side surround it pack it in tight as you can around the sides okay that one's ready to go over to the growth table so let me get the rest of these thirteen remaining pots done and we'll get all 15 of them over there in the grow table and get them watered in be right back [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] okay we got all the all 15 five-gallon buckets are all set out onto the 5-gallon Grove tables and got the rubicon napa cabbage off and running so we'll look forward to the days ahead as this matures stick with us we'll watch the progression of these all the way up to harvest and I can present some beautiful napa cabbage to Nancy and her mama so we got them all going and we'll be back in a couple of weeks just to watch them grow we'll be back soon well our rubicon napa cabbage in the in the buckets are doing really good as you can see they're flushed out and they're really getting some really good top growth on them now it's getting later in the year they've been there it's getting cooler so that's when they really get to thriving so now they're starting to get that vertical growth that I'm looking for which means they're going to get that cabbage head in there that will fold up where I can get that heart that's the part that I really want to get so all these other leaves on here we you know after we harvest them we say this is that's great for the chickens very healthy for them but anyway you can also eat them as well but message goes after the heart that's what we really even wanna be's but anyway we'll be coming back in the days ahead and doing a harvest on these I'd say they're probably about oh maybe about another month be another month we'll come out and we'll check them by feeling them to see it give them the old squeeze test to see if the heads in there and we'll sample one to see how it looks and if they're good then we'll go ahead and get them up but we'll be back here and probably maybe three to four weeks and take another look at it see you then well today's a big day are rubicon napa cabbage is ready to harvest and you know what that means kimchi yeah her mama moved down she lives right up here about 15 minutes up the road from us so she gets to come over and get all this she wants and her nancy make all kinds of kimchi together so this is their favorite one right so anyway we checked it I did the squeeze test on it it's firm got some good heads y'all have seen us grow this before so we just want to get a nice little harvest here so her mama can have a nice kimchi making party but how I do this it's pretty simple I just come up to the to the to the cabbage and I push the outer leaves out of the way so I can get to the core so a vertical core of these cabbages is really what you want so let's get a few of these up and get them over to the a harvest area and we'll rinse them off we'll get them ready and then she'll cut them all up and get them ready for a kimchi so let's push these down get these back out of the way get a long knife there we go beautiful that's a beautiful napa cabbage right there rubicon napa that's what this one is so let's get these up and get started [Music] jaqen treats [Music] them always act like they Nate in a year [Music] well I thank you for joining us on this journey that we took together on grow some rubicon napa cabbage everybody wins today you your mama and the chickens said we got a nice beautiful crop we're very thankful for this harvest and look forward to lots of kimchi in the days ahead so until me and Nancy see you next time always remember fives hands we're fed give us Lord our daily bread amen have a blessed day [Music] you [Music]
