hey guys welcome to another episode of plant fanatics today we're going to be showing how to germinate pawpaw seeds uh this is actually specifically part two we're gonna link part one in the description uh if you haven't watched that already i highly suggest that you watch that before you start doing this because what we've done already as you can see here is that we put these in the fridge for a process that was called stratification and stratification is when a seed needs to go through a dormancy period which means that i put it in the fridge on 8 27 2020 this is january 8 2021 so they've been in there for over four months and uh what that's going to do is put the seed through a dormancy period and when we pull it back out after that time it's going to pretend to the seed it's going to be like it went through a winter and so when we put it into a pot to start germinating it as the temperatures are warmer it's going to tell that seed to wake up and to start sprouting so it's just following the natural process that these seeds would have gone through had it had been a fruit on a tree and then it dropped off and the seed went into the ground so i highly suggest you watch part one before you watch this but if you've already seen part one let's get right into this so what you're gonna wanna do is after you get your seeds out of the fridge after they've been in there for i like to say a minimum of 90 days so these have been in there for over four months they're definitely ready to go um all i'm gonna do i just open up this bag which has the soil and the seeds in there and i go ahead and reach in here and i feel for them and there's one of the seeds that's been in the fridge and i just go ahead and put them in this other sink over here and i reach in and i find all of them that i can and after i get all of them out of the bag and i have them all in this sink over here i just like to turn on the water and you can see all that soil that's on there i just like to rinse them off get them nice and clean there's that and as you can see over here i had another bag that i've already done over here and i just go ahead set them on this paper towel to dry and after they've dried after i have all the seeds over here i go ahead and go out to the greenhouse and pot them up so go ahead and follow me out there all right so now we're in the greenhouse we have our seeds that you just saw inside out here and we're going to throw kind of a curve ball here i know for a fact that growing in this kind of pot right here is going to work when you put them in the individual pots you give them you know some warmth they're going to take off but the curve ball is i'm going to try a few different methods one of them being putting them in these this little six pack here it's probably going to work but we'll i've never done it this way before so we'll see and then another one is going to be throwing them in this big container and having them all grow together for a little bit and then transplanting them i'm interested to see how they do being transplanted typically it's not a great idea to um give something like a papa from what i've heard it's not good to to transplant them uh from soil like this and have their roots be bare uh to put them into a new pot apparently they don't do well with that so i'm gonna test that out for myself and you guys can come along for the journey so let's go ahead and get right into it oh and i should probably tell you guys i'm using this uh miracle grow seed starting potting mix it's really good i use it for everything i've used other brands haven't had uh as good of success as i have with miracle grow they're just they're really good don't know what they're doing back there but they're doing something right and all we're gonna do is fill these pots up so probably speed this part up alright guys now that we have these pots filled up there is one more thing that we're going to do it's called the paper towel method you've probably seen it a lot with citrus trees if you've never seen it before i actually have a video where i do the paper towel method show you how to do it and i'm also going to show you how to do it with this we're going to test it out see if that'll work as well so that's going to be another way we're going to try that out now all there is to do is take these seeds and just shove them into this mix you don't have to put them in there crazy deep or anything just push them in there a little bit cover the seeds all right so those are done same thing here just kind of shove them in there a little bit pat it down a little bit not super hard but tap it a little bit and then now in here we're just gonna do the same thing put them in there a little bit probably just put like six of them in here pat them in a little bit we'll call that good and now we have these seeds left here that we're gonna do the paper towel method with inside the house next step is just get these watered in a little bit don't need too too much water now we're going to let those drain and then after that i'm going to put them on this heating mat over here uh all it is is connected to a thermostat it's just gonna give that bottom warmth i'll probably keep it at around 70 75 degrees which is typically what i'll do with seedlings so if you don't have one of these heating mats i suggest that you get one if you're into plants it's just one of those things you're going to end up with eventually as you're germinating seeds all the time this one is vivison um it's a it's worked really well for me i've had it for years never had any problems with it but you don't have to have bottom heat especially if you wait a little bit more into spring here it's january still winter i'm just getting a little bit of a head start on these i have a greenhouse so that also helps with things but i had to wait a long time to have a greenhouse as well i did a lot of stuff in the house whenever i was first starting so however you can mimic a greenhouse you know putting a top on containers like these putting bags over things um it's definitely what i recommend doing but now let's head back inside and i'll show you the paper towel method as well so now we're back in the house um the reason that i want to try this paper towel method with these seeds is because as you guys uh you know keep going on your plant journey and in plant propagation starting seeds everything like that there's really only a few things that seeds typically need to germinate and it pretty much goes across the board there's a few you know give and takes about that but typically you need warmth and you need moisture in order for a seed to start germinating so i'm trying this method because it works for the citrus it works for a lot of different seeds so now we're going to see if it's going to work with these of course um seeds like these the pawpaws apples things of that nature typically need to go through the stratification process which we've already done so now we're just gonna do the moisture part we're going to give them warmth we're going to give them moisture and let's see what happens get some moisture in there you don't want to squeeze it out too too much you want it to have that a little bit of wetness to it but not overly saturated we're not trying to rot them all right so all i'm going to do at this point is take these seeds and just kind of put them sporadically in here i try to give them a little bit of space because a root's going to probably come out and we want to give it a little bit of room to grow now that we've got them in the paper towel we're just going to go ahead and put them in a plastic baggie we're going to write what the seeds are and the date on there just so we know when we started make sure the seeds are viable if it starts taking way too long we'll probably assume the seeds are dead at that point and all that we're gonna do now is simply stick these in this bag get that air out of there zip it closed and now i'm just gonna go put this in a warm dark location and i'm going to check up on them probably every few days mainly we just want to make sure that there's no mold build up and if there is take them out of that put them in a new fresh paper towel and that should take care of the problem completely um anyway guys keep tuning into the videos you've seen all the different methods that i've tried with this i want to give you guys the best method i know for a fact that putting them in just a single pot is going to work if you've stratified them correctly but i'm interested to see how all these other methods go so stay tuned if you haven't already subscribe to the channel and please give this video a like any support is awesome so thanks so much guys
