hey there hi welcome to the channel i am garrett i'm a formerly educated interior decorator and on this channel we talk about interior design we talk about making your home beautiful and we talk about how to do it now in this extremely highly requested video i am breaking down the studio mcgee signature style the studio mcgee home is not something that's black and white it's not something that's textbook it's suited to fit each and every individual and different person so there are going to be a lot of different styles you can incorporate into this and i hope you will find this breakdown to be really helpful to get you that mcgee home vibe that you've been looking for now the one thing i always want you to remember is that even though studio mcgee has a line that you can go to the store and buy they have a collection at target they have their own website you don't necessarily have to go through them to get their look i want you to understand how these different styles and different elements are incorporated together to make them fit into your home which is the first thing i want to talk about your home the architecture of your space because this is something that is very signature in studio mcgee and i think a lot of people are very confused about the mcgee's style because i think it gets i think it gets put into this kind of farmhouse corner that it's definitely not a part of and the reason for that is the architecture so studio mcgee's clients typically come to them to get a get an entire creation get an entire house and this usually involves either building a brand new house from the ground up or completely renovating an existing home so that way they all kind of have a similar architectural style i mean it's not necessarily intentional to have this style but the mcgee home definitely has a signature architectural style to it and that is very open so there's always going to be an open kitchen and living room there's always going to be an informal dining space in that area usually an island with bar stools the mailman is right there oh so architecture tends to be very blocky very square in shape it also usually has the undertones of modern farmhouse now i don't think you necessarily need to go renovate your entire home to get this look i think that you can use your existing space to create it so some of the hallmarks of that are going to be very light colors we typically see light flooring in in the modern farmhouse style black window frames or something that's really big in it um you know what modern farmhouse looks like so i'm not going to dive too much into detail about that in addition to those floor plans being somewhat blocky you're also going to have furniture layouts that are also very blocky i don't i don't know if i like to use the word blocky to describe it i think that there's a lot of 90 degree angles very much square shapes involved in the layouts um you know we're always going to have things that are very symmetrical and feel and shape and form and that's going to be a signature of the studio mcgee style and layout so i want you to keep that in mind when you're planning this this is just the overall generic part of this now let's get into the signature elements of the style our first category which is going to be different styles of furniture so i've actually gotten some comments about hey what is the difference between the joanna gaines magnolia home style and the studio mcgee style and the reality is that joanna gaines style is farmhouse 100 i know a lot of other youtubers are saying that's out it's definitely not magnolia home is very farmhouse very very very very farmhouse to its core versus studio mcgee incorporates a lot of different styles it gets labeled as modern it gets labeled as traditional it gets labeled as farmhouse it's none of that it's all of that but also none of that so the different styles that are used to build up the studio mcgee's signature style are gonna be varying and wide and they're used in very specific and strategic ways the first one i actually want to talk to you about is contemporary so contemporary refers to a time period that is now of the present and this is going to be a style that's used in different furniture pieces one of which will be sofas we see a sofas that have a lot of clean lines that are very sleek and simple she likes to play with two different sofas but one of those sofas at the least will be very contemporary and as of now also we see a lot of upholstered beds and bed frames that are very very much clean lines simple sleek that is also very contemporary so those two elements are always always going to be contemporary there's always elements of them that are just simple minimal and sleek that allow the mcgee team to build and layer other styles into them the next style we're going to talk about is industrial farmhouse and the reason i say industrial farmhouse as opposed to just farmhouse or modern farmhouse is that a lot of the styles that studio mcgee uses have this really really kind of industrial or warehouse-like feel a lot of this is going to be in lighting it's going to be iron and metal and they're going to be looking like agricultural use lightings that's where we get that kind of industrial feel farmhouse comes into play with a lot of like table bases we're using thick blocky reclaimed woods this is going to give us a very farmhouse and very homey and cozy like feel to your space the next style i want to talk to you about that they incorporate into every space is actually boho boho is used in a number of different ways this is where we see a lot of baskets come into play a lot of wickers and rattans come into play a lot of times this will be in chairs but we always see it in styling boho styling is very much about being warm very cozy very comfortable this is going to be blankets thrown over sofas this is going to be like bowls with wooden beads in it a lot of texture a lot of reclaimed pieces very very much velho elements to this one of the boho elements that they use in all of their styles that i think is actually very interesting is layering rugs so a lot of times the mcgee team will take like a jute rug or something that's a very natural texture and layer something vintage antique something that is woven maybe it's wool maybe it's not i don't know but they will layer them together that's a very boho kind of look feel and vibe that works really really successfully in creating a very homey warm and cozy feeling space now the last element that studio mcgee uses in every single space every single space in the one nobody ever talks about and gets completely slept on swept under the rug when it comes to the mcgee home is mid century this is the number one style that they are incorporating into their spaces and they do it in so many different ways now we have sofas that have mid-century style legs and forms to them i think that this is always really fabulous and like i said studio mcgee is always going to mix in two different sofas so something that's contemporary and something that's mid-century will actually work together really really successfully because they incorporate similar elements like clean lines simple shapes and forms the mid-century style is known for using angular lines even though those kind of angular lines are used within those more blocky layouts it's going to break it up and break up how clean this space is lined and laid out because of those angles it's a really really big style that they're always incorporating and the number one place the mcgee team incorporates mid-century is in accent chairs i could not find anything that studio mcgee has ever done no homes it doesn't matter if it was in their netflix series doesn't matter if it's on their instagram it doesn't matter if you just google images there's not a single layout a single room a single living room dining room space or anything that did not incorporate something mid-century especially in those accent chairs they are just all over the place and everywhere they make such a big impact in such a minimal way because one of the elements of mid-century is very much light feeling furniture and and i mean that it incorporates a lot of thin lines and so this is where we see a lot of metal come into play a lot of beautiful woods i think a lot of mid-century is made using teakwood which is really beautiful and that's something that is incorporated throughout their spaces as a whole so these mid-century chairs will always be fabulous you can find them vintage you can find them antique um industry west toys has a lot of amazing ones and studio mcgee themselves their own line also incorporates a lot of them into their style i find that these mid-century chairs are just everywhere it doesn't matter if it's a chair in a living room a dining room a bar stool they're just all over the place and i think it's a really fabulous signature to have that nobody is talking about always always you cannot have a mcgee themed or styled space without a mid-century style chair these can come in a lot of different shapes and forms um we have curved back chairs we have barrel chairs we have angular chairs there's there's so many different things there's one that was so fabulous with this gorgeous bench this this style is not any one thing it's not textbook it's not black and white it's very much incorporating these different styles layered together so keep in mind we have elements of farmhouse we have elements of contemporary and boho but that mid-century is what's going to have the biggest and boldest impact whether that is in chairs we also see a lot of these like waterfall edge tables gorgeous mid-century pieces absolutely beautiful and this doesn't matter if it's a burl wood it doesn't matter what type of wood it is or anything like that it's all very much in keeping with mid-century and this is something studio mcgee loves to use now we've talked about a lot of different styles of furnishing that is used in the mcgee home the next category i want to talk to you about is color so the studio mcgee color palette is is more minimal but it isn't any less impactful 90 of the spaces that the that the mcgee team have created are white um and that's very much a signature it's gonna make a space feel open bright airy we all know that a white can be great if used properly and the reason it's so successful in a mcgee home is that there are always a lot of windows there's always there's not a lot of big empty walls when you have white in a home that has a lot of big empty walls it can be very overbearing it can be very intimidating and it can be a lot just just a lot it's it's hard to work with just like all white everything in these big massive walls because they tend to just swallow everything and make everything look small so the mcgee home breaks a lot of that up architecturally but 90 of the spaces are going to be white now when we are talking about furniture and furnishings and what kind of color schemes we're using in those we always use white there's always like a white sofa a white bed white bedding white's a very strong color used in that also but we see a lot of natural linen type colors this is going to be something that is very warm very inviting and is going to be something that's a little bit more livable and user friendly like how how if you have kids and dogs having a white stuff is great because it's beautiful but then you also have to clean it and they can be cleaned but i i don't know about you i don't have the lifestyle to just be cleaning a white sofa every week like i'm busy i got stuff to do so white sofas aren't necessarily always the best but the mcgee home will use natural linen oatmeal type colors creams and ivories this can be really really successfully used in a space and what type of color you're specifically going to use is going to depend on your space because lighting in every space is going to change how things look and affect them but a linen ivory is always something that's used whether it's in a sofa chairs rugs bedding a really really great and wonderful color the next color that i want to talk to you about is actually blue we see navy blue and we'll also see denim blues used um and when i say denim blue i mean very much like a light blue with a dusty kind of tone to it that is going to be reflective of denim but not necessarily denim specifically um blues are used in a lot of different ways i've seen blue kitchens used i've seen a couple of blue spaces like i said the studio mcgee space is very much like all white they don't really use a lot of dark colors but i have seen a number of them that have been blue like i said blue kitchens but blue is an accessory it's a color that's used quite often so it also confuses some people into thinking that the studio mcgee's style is actually like somewhat coastal i don't find that it's very costly i think that the boho elements combined with the blue gets confused for coastal but definitely not blue is a color that's also used really really successfully in a lot of studio mickey homes we also cannot talk about the mcgee home without mentioning brown leather and like i said with those mid-century elements this brown leather is going to be so successful and it's not like a deep dark rich brown leather it's more of an orangey bright and fresh brown leather versus like a deep you know like chocolatey brown kind of leather so something very similar to this box behind me here um this is going to be used in a number of ways we see mid-century sofas used in this this is always something used in chairs it makes a really good statement ottoman too um the mcgee team just loves this color brown because like i said they use a lot of mid-century elements in their style and in their design and this is a really great way to incorporate color in a very natural way now let's talk about accents we always see a lot of black accents used but we don't tend to see them used in upholstery it's more about metal work we also will see them sometimes used as small accessories like in maybe like a painted wood accessory something like that but we're talking about shelf styling we're not talking about furniture so we have black metal used in furniture as far as like table legs chair legs um bar stool legs we see it kind of well they have a couple of times used black as wall colors that's not necessarily their number one most popular element and i think she actually went into detail on this on the dream home makeover show on netflix which i definitely recommend you watch really really fun show not that i need to tell you like you're coming to this video to learn about studio mcgee you probably already watched the show but that's not the point of this video so anyway um but black is used very sparingly and if it is used on walls it tends to be more of a charcoal than a black but black elements are used very successfully once again that very much is that industrial farmhouse kind of feel it very much the mid-century kind of feel and it can be a way to court incorporate different elements and drag color through a space in a very minimal way because black is kind of a neutral color it because the the reality is is that it's not it can be used in a very bold way but it's not very impactful unless used in large scale and it will actually read as being very minimal or somewhat rustic if used in a textural way so black is used really successfully in their color scheme we've gone through color schemes we've gone through different styles let's talk about wood tones because wood tones are going to make the world of difference in a studio mickey home we tend to see 90 of the wood tones are light architecturally so when it comes to flooring or cabinetry very light white oaks french oaks um this very very light tone is gonna provide a bright airy and open feeling space we're gonna see it flowing very nicely from floors to cabinetry because it just works really well together i would recommend finding something that doesn't have a major undertone to it i personally redid the floors in my home which is in some of my previous videos i would definitely recommend you go back and watch them a really affordable vinyl it's a really successful color that could be used in a studio mcgee home but you want to go for something that has a brown base to it but it's still very light reason for that being is because those brown wood tones are going to be more neutral than say a red or a pink or a yellow wood tone or even an orange wood tone because they are going to flow more nicely they're going to be more cohesive with things because they are very neutral and will mix and match with other wood tones really well because that is something that studio mighty also does because the other wood tone we tend to see is a very mid-tone wood now the reason for this is because it's something we definitely see used a lot of mid-century um but it isn't something we so much see in the farmhouse so those farmhouse elements are going to have a lot more of those lighter with tones as where mid-century is going to have the more mid-tone wood tones we don't really ever see dark wood tones like you see behind me here this is something that's too dark studio maybe you just would not use this in their spaces the thing i would recommend is that if you do have dark pieces or you do like wood tones that are a lot darker than the studio mcgee ones be sure to pick the right flooring tone because something that has a brown base to it is gonna work really successfully with something like this that has red brown tones in it um and it's really gonna be about picking the right flooring for your home if all of those wood tones are going to clash or if they're going to flow really really well together so something super important when it comes to the mcgee home is the wood tones you want to make sure you are picking the right ones now the next thing i want to talk to you about is actually wall decor and we're going to talk about this because it's very interesting in the mcgee home i find that the way shane mcgee uses wall decor is completely different than anybody would recommend and i also i don't see a lot of other designers mentioning or talking about how she hangs artwork which is fine i find that she will use either one mid-sized piece and a small size piece collaged together sometimes we'll see a collage of three usually it's just two and it might be like a mid-sized piece with a smaller piece above it um and those pieces will be hung i you know there's we actually went into detail about this in another video where a lot of designers recommend you hang artwork at your eye level i said i do not recommend that i don't find it to be very successful in most homes i like to hang artwork in line with architecture shane mcgee goes completely opposite of the other two she likes it to be low she is not a big person she is 5'3 and the reason i mention that is because like look at this photo she is like this artwork is hung so low even for her like her eyes are above this artwork so what she likes to do is take artwork and make it a piece of the furniture so she likes to enhance the height of a piece of furniture like this table for example she would hang artwork very low it might come up to like here and so it's going to take the top of this table from here to being up here and she's going to incorporate some large elements with that very much a studio mcgee's signature um i think that you can hang artwork appropriately and still have a very successful look that's similar to this and get that in your space but we're talking about the studio mcgee signature and that is it she's also going to use large artwork that is also hung a little bit too low but artwork is used sparingly it's used very very sparingly for a number of reasons one you cannot underestimate the power of md's space it speaks louder than anything it's going to make a space feel large feel open and feel airy having an openness to it just not having something there is going to make that space feel larger bigger and more empty and that's not always a bad thing it most often times is something that is very good studio makey uses them super super successfully and i just got an amazon delivery don't worry about the style of frames there's nothing specific to it there's not really a rhyme or reason into why this frame and that frame was selected other than just to have an interesting feeling contrast um and this is actually very very affordable if you have art you already have it framed you can just hang it all up together in a very kind of uncultivated way that creates a very cultivated look and i think that's really really successful and can be done well now one thing i will say about the studio mcgee home is the hardware always this is very textbook and this can be done very successfully black and gold that's it there's no chrome there is no silver there's none of that the only time you're ever going to see anything that is a silver metallic is if it's a stainless steel refrigerator or oven um hardware hardware on light fixtures cabinetry lamps doesn't matter always going to be black and gold lighting tends to be more black metals but cabinetry hardware tends to be more gold or a mix of black and gold which i think is also very successful that's something to always keep in mind let's talk about some styling signatures of the mcgee home you cannot have a mickey home without a bowl full of beads like i don't know what is with this it's not something i personally get or understand we're going to talk about this in another video so be sure to stay tuned for that one but wood tones and accessories are very mcgee feeling but one of the hallmarks i see in the mcgee home is that in a bedroom it doesn't matter if it is a primary bedroom doesn't matter if it's secondary the kids rooms anything like that aside from one room she did which i believe was a bunk room and that's for a specific reason there is always something whether it is some there is always some sort of seating at the foot of a bed sometimes it will be a sofa sometimes it will be a bench sometimes it will be chairs there's always some sort of seating at the foot of a bed obviously like i said with the bunk room it was a little bit different because like there's no foot of the bed to put seating which i think is obvious and there was no need for me to say but you get that but there's always seating at the end of a bed now i think you can do this really successfully if you have a smaller space it's not necessary sometimes you'll even see a bench under a window um just be mindful if you're going to do this about clearances you want to be able to get around your room and around your space this is something i don't do in homes because i find that chairs and bedrooms tend to collect things now the next thing i would say to keep in mind in the mcgee home is that there's very minimal window treatments used the openness the airiness and the lack of privacy in a window in the mcgee home is not a problem there are not a lot of window treatments used if they are used they're going to be very light very airy they're not very dark or contrasted there's not really i don't ever really notice blackouts in a room um sometimes i'm sure she has used them in some instances because some people like to have blackout curtains in their room and like i said this is a residential design firm so you're gonna have to adjust that in accordance with what your lifestyle requires but the mcgee home uses curtains and drapery very sparingly another thing i will say is that be sure to incorporate your personal style things you love your elements colors you like into your space i have seen the mcgee team use pink sofas use blush use purple use all sorts of colors that people really like you can do this very successfully in a very minimal way that will be very tonal in keeping with the overall signature studio mcgee look but will be very personal to you so make sure you go ahead and do that um color can of course always and should always be used in kids rooms um just make the spaces personal to you but make sure that if you're going for this style that you keep in mind these signature elements and you cannot have a mcgee home without a lot of mid-century pieces keep your eyes peeled for those you can also find mid-century lamps that will work really successfully in a mcgee home a lot of the light fixtures in a mcgee home are going to be farmhouse but they always will kind of have those mid-century lines to them where they're very sleek and very minimal very clean lines but then they'll have lamp shades on them or they'll be round or circular that give you that farmhouse look but still in keeping with mid-century so that mid-century style is gonna be very very essential to the mcgee home i would say that the mcgee home is more mid-century and contemporary than it is farmhouse or boho or traditional or anything and you can always incorporate traditional elements whether that is a sofa with curved arms you can make a space feel more homey with more traditional style chairs or seating just make sure you're incorporating those mid-century elements you're keeping to these color schemes and you will have such an incredible and successful studio mcgee style home that people will be like oh my goodness how did you have shane mcgee come here and do this for you and you'll say girl it was garrett le chic and at that note i will leave it here i hope you found this video helpful if you did be sure to let me know in the comment section down below subscribe to the channel and like this video if you did and i will see you in
